Abstract

For Doppler-broadened media operating under double-double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) conditions, we devise a scheme to control and reduce the probe-field group velocity at the center of the second transparency window. We derive numerical and approximate analytical solutions for the width of EIT windows and for the group velocities of the probe field at the two distinct transparency windows, and we show that the group velocities of the probe field can be lowered by judiciously choosing the physical parameters of the system. Our modeling enables us to identify three signal-field strength regimes (with a signal-field strength always higher than the probe-field strength), quantified by the Rabi frequency, for slowing the probe field. These three regimes correspond to a weak signal field, with the probe-field group velocity and transparency-window width both smaller for the second window compared to the first window, a medium-strength signal field, with a probe-field group velocity smaller in the second window than in the first window but with larger transparency-window width for the second window, and the strong signal field, with both group velocity and transparency-window width larger for the second window. Our scheme exploits the fact that the second transparency window is sensitive to a temperature-controlled signal-field nonlinearity, whereas the first transparency window is insensitive to this nonlinearity.

Double Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Hessa M. M. Alotaibi

This study demonstrates that tripod atom-field electronic structure can yield rich electromagnetically induced transparency phenomena, even at room temperature. In particular, we introduce double double electromagnetically induced transparency (DDEIT), wherein signal and probe fields each have two transparency windows. Their group velocities can be matched in either the first or second pair of transparency windows. Moreover, signal and probe fields can each experience coherent Raman gain in the second transparency window. Our investigation has demonstrated that the self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) vanish at the center of two transparency windows for resonant coupling field. However, the values of the XPM and SPM in the region of the second EIT window are improved by a factor of $1000$ compared to their values in the region of the first EIT window under the same conditions, and have non-zero values at the center of the second EIT window for nonresonant coupling field. Additionally, we derive an analytical solution for the wave equation describing the propagation of the probe field whose amplitude-envelope function is described by the fundamental mode Laguerre-Gaussian function. Our solution exhibits that the group velocity of the probe field reduces as the field propagates through the medium. The group velocity reduction is a consequence of spatially-varying susceptibility. The variation of the susceptibility is established by employing signal field whose amplitude-envelope functions is also described by the fundamental mode Laguerre-Gaussian function. For Doppler-broadened media, we devise a scheme to control and reduce the probe-field group velocity at the center of the second transparency window. Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Window in the System of Four-level Configuration

Wu Han-Hua

The absorption and dispersion properties of an N-type four-level system with Doppler(broadening) effect were investigated. In this system we considered two coherent fields and a probe field. When the second coherent field is absent, this system is a single three-level configuration, and the absorption line is just one clear electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) window. While the second coherent field exists, there are two EIT windows which become wide and deep with the(coherent) intensity increasing. The position width and absorbance of the transparency windows can be manipulated by adjusting the detuning of the driving field. In addition,we also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be reduced.

Double electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level lambda atomic system with doppler broadening

Hiền Nguyễn Thị Thu, Bang Nguyen Huy, Le Van Doai +1 more

In this paper, we study the formation of two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows in a four-level lambda atomic system with Doppler broadening. The depth and the width of the EIT windows are easily changed by adjusting the intensity of the controlling laser fields. Meanwhile, the position of the EIT windows is also easily shifted by changing the frequency of the laser fields. In particular, by turning on or off one of the two coupling laser fields, the probe field response can be switched between one or two EIT window regimes, i.e., it is possible to switch between absorption and transparency regimes, and vice versa. In addition, our analytical model also allows one to investigate the influence of temperature (or Doppler width) on EIT windows, which is necessary for experimental observations as well as related applications at room temperature.

Slow light with persistent hole burning

R. N. Shakhmuratov, Alexander Rebane, Patrice Mégret +1 more

We consider the propagation of a Gaussian probe pulse in an absorptive, optically dense, two-level medium if a deep, persistent hole is created in advance by another pump field in the inhomogeneously broadened absorption spectrum of this medium. Both fields are well separated in time and the lifetime of the hole is assumed to be long with respect to the delay time between the pump and probe pulses. We show that the group velocity of the Gaussian probe pulse reduces several orders in magnitude, similarly to the reduction of the group velocity for the probe field in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomena. In contrast to EIT, the width of the transparency window can be made very wide because of the saturation broadening of the hole.

The effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system

Le Van Doai

Abstract We propose an analytical model to study the effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity of probe light in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this scheme, a nonlinearity of the medium is enhanced greatly around in three spectral regions corresponding to transparent windows. As a consequence, such a giant Kerr nonlinearity of the medium changes significantly group index for probe light which can obstruct light slowdown. Moreover, this model shows also that the probe propagation can switch between subluminal and superluminal modes in three EIT windows by adjusting the parameters of the signal and coupling fields. Such analytical model is not only convenient for considering the influence of laser parameters on group velocity but is also easy used to fit the experimental results.

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency in optical fibre

Agus Muhamad Hatta, Ali A. Kamli, Ola Al-Hagan +1 more

Abstract Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the core of optical fibre containing three-level atoms is investigated. The guided modes are treated in the weakly guiding approximation which renders the analysis into a manageable form. The transparency window and permittivity profile of the core due to the strong pump field in the EIT scheme is calculated. For a specific permittivity profile of the core due to EIT, the propagation constant of the weak signal field and spatial shape of fundamental guided mode are calculated by solving the vector wave equation using the finite difference method. It is found that the transparency window and slow light field can be controlled via the optical fibre parameters. The reduced group velocity of slow light in this configuration is useful for many technological applications such as optical memories, effective control of single photon fields, optical buffers and delay lines.
