Abstract

In this paper, we propose a novel low complexity scaling strategy of min-sum decoding algorithm for irregular LDPC codes. In the proposed method, we generalize our previously proposed simplified Variable Scaled Min-Sum (SVS-min-sum) by replacing the sub-optimal starting value and heuristic update for the scaling factor sequence by optimized values. Density evolution and Nelder-Mead optimization are used offline, prior to the decoding, to obtain the optimal starting point and per iteration updating step size for the scaling factor sequence of the proposed scaling strategy. The optimization of these parameters proves to be of noticeable positive impact on the decoding performance. We used different DVB-T2 LDPC codes in our simulation. Simulation results show the superior performance (in both WER and latency) of the proposed algorithm to other Min-Sum based algorithms. In addition to that, generalized SVS-min-sum algorithm has very close performance to LLR-SPA with much lower complexity.

Simplified variable-scaled min sum LDPC decoder for irregular LDPC codes

Ahmed A. Emran, Maha Elsabrouty

Min-Sum decoding is widely used for decoding LDPC codes in many modern digital video broadcasting decoding due to its relative low complexity and robustness against quantization error. However, the suboptimal performance of the Min-Sum affects the integrated performance of wireless receivers. In this paper, we present the idea of adapting the scaling factor of the Min-Sum decoder with iterations through a simple approximation. For the ease of implementation the scaling factor can be changed in a staircase fashion. The stair step is designed to optimize the decoder performance and the required storage for its different values. The variable scaling factor proposed algorithm produces a nontrivial improvement of the performance of the Min-Sum decoding as verified by simulation results.

Variable LLR Scaling in Min-Sum Decoding for Irregular LDPC Codes

Yin Xu, Leszek Szczeciński, Bo Rong +4 more

Min-sum decoding is a low-complexity alternative to the so-called belief propagation and consists in simplification of the nonlinear operation on the log likelihood ratios (LLRs) in the check nodes. The resulting suboptimality may be tempered via appropriate scaling of the LLRs, e.g., the fixed optimal scaling in the normalized min-sum algorithm, and variable scaling algorithms gradually appearing in the literature. However, up to now, none of the papers studied variable scaling both as per iteration and as per different check node degree, due to the prohibitive complexity of multioptimization over space of too many parameters. In this paper, we propose a generalized mutual information (GMI) of LLRs as the criterion to search for the scaling factors for different check node degrees in every iteration in a 1-D thus low-complexity manner. This approach is first analyzed via density evolution, and in addition can be extended to practical LLRs based formulas via Monte Carlo tools to cope with the mismatch issue. Bit error rate simulation results on two low-density parity-check codes show that our proposed GMI metrics have a noticeable gain over the variable scaling schemes that appeared in the literature.

Adaptive quantization in min-sum based irregular LDPC decoder

Sangmin Kim, Gerald E. Sobelman, Hanho Lee

In this paper, we present adaptive quantization schemes in the normalized min-sum decoding algorithm considering scaling effects to improve the performance of irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder for WirelessMAN (IEEE 802.16e) applications. We discuss the finite precision effects on the performance of irregular LDPC codes and develop optimal finite word lengths of variables over an SNR. For floating point simulation, it is known that in the normalized min-sum or offset min-sum algorithms the performance of a min-sum based decoder is not sensitive to scaling in the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values. However, when considering the finite precision for hardware implementation, the scaling affects the dynamic range of the LLR values. The proposed adaptive quantization approach provides the optimal performance in selecting suitable input LLR values to the decoder as far as the tradeoffs between error performance and hardware complexity are concerned.

A Modified Normalized Min - Sum Decoding Algorithm for Irregular LDPC Codes

Michaelraj Kingston Roberts, Ramesh Jayabalan

In this paper, a modified normalized Min-Sum algorithm (MNMSA) is proposed for decoding irregular Low Density Parity Check Codes (LDPC) with non-uniform degree distribution. The proposed algorithm provides an efficient decoding scheme to enhance the error performance of an irregular LDPC code without increasing the hardware complexity. An efficient 6- bit quantization scheme is utilized in the proposed algorithm with optimally combined normalization and down scaling factors to resolve the magnitude overestimation issue which occurs during iterative message passing process between the nodes. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves good decoding performance in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER) and Bit Error Rate (BER) without the requirement of complex arithmetic calculations. Compared to other min- sum based decoding algorithms the decoding process of the proposed MNMSA requires only fewer decoding iterations over wide range of signal- to- noise ratio (SNR) to achieve comparable decoding performance to that of Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm without increasing the hardware complexity.

Performance of Quantized Min-Sum Decoding Algorithms for Irregular LDPC Codes

Daesun Oh, Keshab K. Parhi

This paper analyzes the performance of quantized min-sum decoding algorithms for irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. For regular LDPC codes, it is known that the normalized or offset min-sum decoding algorithm with quantization bits less than 6 bits achieves good performances over wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). However, finite precision effects in decoding irregular LDPC codes are different from that in decoding regular LDPC codes which is caused by the difference of convergence speeds between low degree nodes and high degree nodes. This paper proposes a novel method to improve the performance of the conventional normalized or offset min-sum decoding algorithm when it is approximated with finite precision for hardware implementations. The proposed method applies down-scaling factors to intrinsic information which has effects on increasing the reliability of extrinsic information at variable nodes and compensating the quantization errors caused by finite precision. Computer simulation results for irregular LDPC codes show that the proposed normalized and offset min-sum decoding algorithms achieve better performances at high SNR compared to the conventional normalized and offset min-sum algorithms under (6:2) quantization scheme.

Variable Min-Sum decoding based on generalized mutual information metric

Yin Xu, Dazhi He, Yunfeng Guan +2 more

Min Sum algorithm simplifies the non-linear check node operation of Belief Propagation algorithm via linear approximation, which greatly reduces the complexity of realization of decoder but degrades the performance as well. The resulting sub-optimality could be tempered via scaling of LLRs, e.g. fixed optimal scaling applied to Min Sum output resulting in the Normalized Min Sum algorithm, and variable scaling schemes gradually appear in literature. In this paper, we study the variable scaling decoding algorithm, and propose to generate variable scaling sequences via generalized mutual information (GMI) metric. Simulation results on real LDPC codes for different decoding algorithms have shown that our GMI metric performs better than the variable scaling scheme appearing in literature, and meanwhile improves substantially in terms of BER over the conventional Normalized Min Sum algorithm.
