Abstract

Solving realistic quantum systems coupled to an environment is a challenging task. Here we develop a hierarchical functional derivative (HFD) approach for efficiently solving the non-Markovian quantum trajectories of an open quantum system embedded in a bosonic bath. An explicit expression for arbitrary order HFD equation is derived systematically. Moreover, it is found that for an analytically solvable model, this hierarchical equation naturally terminates at a given order and thus becomes exactly solvable. This HFD approach provides a systematic method to study the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of an open system coupled to a bosonic environment.

Stochastic decoupling approach to the spin-boson dynamics: Perturbative and nonperturbative treatments

Wei Wu

We develop a hierarchical functional derivative (HFD) method to investigate the reduced dynamics of a spin-boson model within the framework of a stochastic decoupling description. Keeping only the lowest-order truncation of the hierarchical functional derivatives, one can recover the second-order Nakajima-Zwanzig quantum master equation. Taking into account the higher-order corrections, our method can be implemented as a highly efficient numerical scheme for a general spin-boson model beyond the usual Markovian, rotating-wave, and weak-coupling approximations.

Efficiently Solving Spin-Boson Dynamics Via Non-Markovian Quantum Trajectories

Zeng-Zhao Li, Cho‐Tung Yip, Hai-Yao Deng +4 more

We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equations for open quantum systems coupled to an environment up to arbitrary orders of noises or coupling strengths. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schrodinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real--time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.

Non-Markovian Relaxation of a Three-Level System: Quantum Trajectory Approach

Jun Jing, Ting Yu

The non-Markovian dynamics of a three-level quantum system coupled to a bosonic environment is a difficult problem due to the lack of an exact dynamic equation such as a master equation. We present for the first time an exact quantum trajectory approach to a dissipative three-level model. We have established a convolutionless stochastic Schrödinger equation called the time-local quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation without any approximations, in particular, without Markov approximation. Our exact time-local QSD equation opens a new avenue for exploring quantum dynamics for a higher dimensional quantum system coupled to a non-Markovian environment.

Quantum-Classical Hierarchical Equations of Motion

Amartya Bose

We develop a quantum-classical hierarchical equations of motion (QC-HEOM) approach for simulating non-Markovian open quantum systems. The method combines the ensemble-averaged classical path reference of the quantum-classical path integral formalism with a hierarchy of auxiliary quantum influence functionals. By incorporating thermal fluctuations through an ensemble average over reference trajectories, the hierarchy is required to represent only the residual quantum memory associated with the imaginary part of the bath response function. Consequently, unlike conventional hierarchical equations of motion, QC-HEOM does not require Matsubara or Padé expansions of the thermal kernel and exhibits only weak temperature dependence of the hierarchy size. Furthermore, because thermal fluctuations are supplied through reference classical trajectories, the framework naturally extends beyond harmonic baths and enables the incorporation of anharmonic and molecular environments through externally generated trajectories. We derive the formalism and demonstrate its exactness for a harmonic bath. Applications to an asymmetric spin-boson model and the seven-site Fenna--Matthews--Olson complex illustrate the accuracy of QC-HEOM. It reproduces benchmark quasi-adiabatic path integral and hierarchical equations of motion results while requiring substantially fewer auxiliary objects, particularly at low temperatures. These results establish QC-HEOM as an efficient framework for treating residual quantum memory in quantum-classical descriptions of open-system dynamics. The separation of thermal fluctuations from residual quantum memory through the use of Wigner trajectories provides an approximate route toward hierarchical treatments of complex anharmonic environments that are inaccessible to conventional HEOM approaches.

A General First- and Second-Order Numerical Solver for Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion

Zhenning Cai, Quanhui Zhu

The numerical simulation of non-Markovian open quantum systems based on the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) equation is complicated by functional derivatives with respect to the stochastic process. A general numerical framework that directly treats these functional derivatives without relying on prescribed decompositions of the bath correlation function is still lacking. In this work, we derive an analytical solution of the linear NMQSD equation that reveals three elementary structures of the non-Markovian stochastic dynamics: stochastic propagation, functional-derivative insertion, and memory pairing. Based on this structure, we construct a general auxiliary-state framework for arbitrary bath correlation functions. The framework separates the numerical construction into time discretization, memory quadrature, and hierarchy truncation. We then construct first- and second-order schemes and provide diagrammatic transition rules for their explicit implementation. Numerical results verify the expected temporal accuracy and demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methods to different bath correlation functions and multi-level quantum systems.
