Abstract

We explain the probe field transmission spectrum under the influence of a strong pump field in a hybrid optomechanical system, composed of an optical cavity, a mechanical resonator, and a two-level atom. We show fast (superluminal) and slow (subluminal) light effects of the transmitted probe field in the hybrid system for suitable parametric regimes. For the experimental accessible domain, we find that the fast light effect obtained for the single optomechanical coupling can further be enhanced with the additional atom-field coupling in the hybrid system. Furthermore, we report the existence of a tunable switch from fast to slow light by adjusting the atomic detuning with the anti-Stokes and Stokes sidebands, respectively, as ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{a}=+{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}$ and $\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{m}$. The reported characteristics are realizable in state-of-the-art laboratory experiments.

Tunable subluminal and superluminal light with optomechanical-induced transparency under steady-state configuration

Salman Khan, Muhammad Awais Chatha

Abstract We study a two-cavity optomechanical system in which one cavity ( A ) encloses a mechanical resonator and the other cavity ( C ) encloses a two-level atom are, respectively, driven by a strong pump and a weak probe fields. In addition to a direct pathway, the excitations in cavity C and the enclosed atom can also be caused through an indirect pathway. The interference between the two possible routs for excitations produces a controllable transparency window in the probe transmission spectrum of cavity C . The coupling strength between cavity C and the atom works as an additional parameter to the coupling strength between the two cavities which helps to manipulate the dynamical properties of the system and hence to control the width of the transparency window. Furthermore, we show that the single setup can be used to produce an optical switch from two different physical behaviors of the model, and to realize subluminal and superluminal behaviors in the output spectrum at probe frequency of cavity C .

Efficient tunable switch from slow light to fast light in quantum opto-electromechanical system

Muhammad Javed Akram, Khalid Naseer, Farhan Saif

The control of slow and fast light propagation, in the probe transmission in a single experiment, is a challenging task. This type of control can only be achieved through highly nonlinear interactions and additional interfering pathway(s), which is therefore seldom reported. Here, we devise a scheme in which slow light, and a tunable switch from slow light to fast light can be achieved in the probe transmission based on a hybrid setup, which is composed of an optical cavity with two charged nano mechanical resonators (MRs). The two MRs are electrostatically coupled via tunable Coulomb coupling strength ($g_{c}$) making a quantum opto-electromechanical system (QOEMS). The parameter $g_{c}$ that couples the two MRs can be switched on and off by controlling the bias voltages on the MRs, and acts as a tunable switch that allows the propagation of transmitted probe field as slow light ($g_{c} \neq 0$) or fast light ($g_{c} = 0$). In our scheme, the magnitude of delay and pulse advancement can be controlled by tuning the Coulomb interaction and power of the pump field. Furthermore, we show that slow light regime in our model is astonishingly robust to the cavity decay rate. In comparison with previous schemes, our scheme has clear advantages that empowers the state-of-the-art photonic industry as well as reflects the strength of emerging hybrid technologies.

Multiple electromagnetically induced transparency, slow and fast light in hybrid optomechanics

Muhammad Javed Akram, Fazal Ghafoor, Farhan Saif

We theoretically investigate the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a weak probe field in hybrid optomechanics with a single three-level ($Λ$-type) atomic system. We report that, in the presence of optomechanical coupling and two transition coupling parameters of three-level atom (TLA), there occurs three distinct multiple EIT windows in the probe absorption spectrum. Moreover, the switching of multiple windows into double and single EIT windows can be obtained by suitably tuning the system parameters. Furthermore, the probe transmission spectrum have been studied. Based on our analytical and numerical work, we explain the occurrence of slow and fast light (superluminal) regimes, and enhancement of superluminal behaviour in the probe field transmission. This work demonstrates great potential in multi-channel waveguide, fiber optics and classical communication networks, multi-channel quantum information processing, real quality imaging, cloaking devices and delay lines & optical buffers for telecommunication.

Quantum control of fast/slow light in atom-assisted optomechanical cavity

Kai-Hui Gu, Dong Yan, Meng-Long Zhang +2 more

In recent years, due to the rapid development of nano science and advanced semiconductor technology, one is able to observe more significant quantum optomechanical effects as optomechanical system turns smaller in size. Optomechanically induced transparency, fast and slow light, optical storage as well as other quantum optical and nonlinear optical effects have become the focus of research. On the other hand, the optomechanical systems coupled to other small subsystems (such as atoms, quantum dots, single electron transistors, etc.) also attract great attention in research. This is because the coupling system has not only provided more degrees of freedom for quantum manipulation, but also opened up more channels for classical and quantum information transfer. In this paper we study the optomechanically induced transparency and fast/slow light phase control in atom-assisted optomechanical cavity. Unlike the traditional systems, in this model the mechanical resonator is directly driven by a weak auxiliary driving field. We therefore find that with the change of amplitude ratio and phase difference between the auxiliary driving field and the probe field, the absorption and dispersion properties of the whole system and the group delay time vary accordingly. In the absence of auxiliary field, we observe the spectral features of the hybrid electromagnetically induced transparency and optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in an atom-cavity-oscillator tripartite optomechanical system. When there exists no phase difference between the auxiliary field and the probe field, we find that the membrane resonance absorption is enhanced with the increase of auxiliary field strength at resonance, causing the the optomechanically induced transparency to be suppressed, and therefore we can modify the amplitude of auxiliary field to control the depth of the OMIT window. When keeping amplitude ratio between the auxiliary field and the probe field unchanged, the modification of the phase difference between the auxiliary field and the probe field directly affects the we can not only realize the manipulation of OMIT window depth, but also control the transformation of tunable optical switch among "absorption", "transparent" and "gain" of the system. Therefore, through changing the phase of auxiliary field and probe field, we can not only realize the manipulation of OMIT window depth, but also control the transformation of tunable optical switch among "absorption" , "transparent" and "gain". In the meantime, we find that the system’s group delay time varies periodically with the change of phase difference. It is worth noting that by adjusting the phase difference and the atomic number, we can not only change the magnitude of the group delay, but also realize the conversion between slow light and fast light effect.

Tunable multicolor optomechanically induced transparency and slow-fast light in hybrid electro-optomechanical system

Ruijie Xiao, Guixia Pan, Ye Liu

Abstract We investigate the tunable multicolor optomechanically induced transparency and the effect of slow/fast light in a hybrid electro-optomechanical system, in which a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA) and a Λ − type three-level atomic ensemble are placed in a optical cavity with two oscillator modes. The system is driven by a strong pump field and a weak probe field, respectively. Multicolor transparency windows appear in the output field under the atom-photon-OPA-phonon-phonon coherent interaction. And the position and width of the transparent port of the output field can be manipulated by properly modifying the different parameters of the subsystem. We also research the slow/fast light effect related to phase and group delay in the probe field. Our proposal provides a great flexibility for phonon storage and has some potential applications in quantum information processing.

Tunable slow and fast light in parity-time-symmetric optomechanical systems with phonon pump

Cheng Jiang, Yuanshun Cui, Zhangyin Zhai +3 more

We study the response of parity-time (PT)-symmetric optomechanical systems with tunable gain and loss to the weak probe field in the presence of a strong control field and a coherent phonon pump. We show that the probe transmission can exceed unity at low control power due to the optical gain of the cavity and it can be further enhanced or suppressed by tuning the amplitude and phase of the phonon pump. Furthermore, the phase dispersion of the transmitted probe field is modified by controlling the applied fields, which allows one to tune the group delay of the probe field. Based on this optomechianical system, we can realize a tunable switch between slow and fast light effect by adjusting the gain-to-loss ratio, power of the control field as well as the amplitude and phase of the phonon pump. Our work provides a platform to control the light propagation in a more flexible way.
