Time crystals from minimum time uncertainty

Abstract

Motivated by the Generalized Uncertainty Principle, covariance, and a minimum measurable time, we propose a deformation of the Heisenberg algebra and show that this leads to corrections to all quantum mechanical systems. We also demonstrate that such a deformation implies a discrete spectrum for time. In other words, time behaves like a crystal. As an application of our formalism, we analyze the effect of such a deformation on the rate of spontaneous emission in a hydrogen atom.

The most general form of deformation of the Heisenberg algebra from the generalized uncertainty principle

Syed Masood, Mir Faizal, M. Zaid Zaz +3 more

In this paper, we will propose the most general form of the deformation of Heisenberg algebra motivated by the generalized uncertainty principle. This deformation of the Heisenberg algebra will deform all quantum mechanical systems. The form of the generalized uncertainty principle used to motivate these results will be motivated by the space fractional quantum mechanics, and non-locality in quantum mechanical systems. We also analyse a specific limit of this generalized deformation for one dimensional system, and in that limit, a nonlocal deformation of the momentum operator generates a local deformation of all one dimensional quantum mechanical systems. We analyse the low energy effects of this deformation on a harmonic oscillator, Landau levels, Lamb shift, and potential barrier. We also demonstrate that this deformation leads to a discretization of space.

The generalized uncertainty principle within the ordinary framework of quantum mechanics

Y.V. Przhiyalkovskiy

A proper deformation of the underlying coordinate and momentum commutation relations in quantum mechanics provides a phenomenological approach to account for the influence of gravity on small scales. Introducing the squared momentum term results in a generalized uncertainty principle, which limits the minimum uncertainty in particle position to the Planck length. However, such a deformation of the commutator significantly changes the formalism, making it separate from the canonical formalism of quantum mechanics. In this study, it is shown that the deformed algebra of position and momentum operators can be incorporated into the framework of ordinary quantum mechanics.

On the Uncertainty relations of K deformed quantum phase space

Giovanni Amelino-camelia A, Jerzy Lukierski B, Anatol Nowicki

The uncertainty relations associated to the covariant κ-deformationof D = 4 relativistic symmetries, with quantum “time” coordinate andmodified Heisenberg algebra, are shown to be consistent with independentheuristic estimates of limitations on the measurability of space-time dis-tances. Our analysis generalizes the one previously reported by one of us,which considered only the space-time coordinate sector.PACS numbers: 11.10. Lm

Time Evolution in Quantum Mechanics with a Minimal Time Scale

Ziemowit Domański

The existence of a minimum measurable length scale was suggested by various theories of quantum gravity, string theory and black hole physics. Motivated by this, we examine a quantum theory exhibiting a minimum measurable time scale. We use the Page–Wootters formalism to describe time evolution of a quantum system with the modified commutation relations between the time and frequency operator. Such modification leads to a minimal uncertainty in the measurement of time. This causes breaking of the time-translation symmetry and results in a modified version of the Schrödinger equation. A minimal time scale also allows us to introduce a discrete Schrödinger equation describing time evolution on a lattice. We show that both descriptions of time evolution are equivalent. We demonstrate the developed theory on a couple simple quantum systems.

Discrete time effects and the spectrum of hydrogen

C. Wolf

An electron in the hydrogen atom would suffer a shift in the frequency of transition from one quantum state to another if it obeyed a discrete time Schrodinger equation. This shift, in principle, could be measured if resolution beyond the hyperfine structure could be made.

Violation of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle and noncommutative quantum mechanics

Catarina Bastos, Orfeu Bertolami A, Nuno Costa Dias +1 more

We show that a possible violation of the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty principle may signal the existence of a deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. More precisely, we prove that any Gaussian in phase space (even if it violates the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty principle) will always be a quantum state of an appropriate noncommutative extension of quantum mechanics. Conversely, all canonical noncommutative extensions of quantum mechanics display states that violate the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty principle.
