Abstract

We analyze entropic uncertainty relations for two orthogonal measurements on a N-dimensional Hilbert space, performed in two generic bases. It is assumed that the unitary matrix U relating both bases is distributed according to the Haar measure on the unitary group. We provide lower bounds on the average Shannon entropy of probability distributions related to both measurements. The bounds are stronger than those obtained with use of the entropic uncertainty relation by Maassen and Uffink, and they are optimal up to additive constants. We also analyze the case of a large number of measurements and obtain strong entropic uncertainty relations, which hold with high probability with respect to the random choice of bases. The lower bounds we obtain are optimal up to additive constants and allow us to prove a conjecture by Wehner and Winter on the asymptotic behavior of constants in entropic uncertainty relations as the dimension tends to infinity. As a tool we develop estimates on the maximum operator norm of a submatrix of a fixed size of a random unitary matrix distributed according to the Haar measure, which are of independent interest.

Strong majorization entropic uncertainty relations

Łukasz Rudnicki, Zbigniew Puchała, Karol Życzkowski

We analyze entropic uncertainty relations in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and derive several strong bounds for the sum of two entropies obtained in projective measurements with respect to any two orthogonal bases. We improve the recent bounds by Coles and Piani [P. Coles and M. Piani, Phys. Rev. A 89, 022112 (2014)], which are known to be stronger than the well-known result of Maassen and Uffink [H. Maassen and J. B. M. Uffink, Phys. Rev. Lett. 60, 1103 (1988)]. Furthermore, we find a bound based on majorization techniques, which also happens to be stronger than the recent results involving the largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary matrix connecting both bases. The first set of bounds gives better results for unitary matrices close to the Fourier matrix, while the second one provides a significant improvement in the opposite sectors. Some results derived admit generalization to arbitrary mixed states, so that corresponding bounds are increased by the von Neumann entropy of the measured state. The majorization approach is finally extended to the case of several measurements.

Tight Entropic Uncertainty Relations

Alberto Riccardi, Lorenzo Maccone

Entropic uncertainty relations $H(A)+H(B)\geqslant γ$ give a nonzero lower bound $γ$ to the sum of the Shannon entropies $H$ of the outcome probabilities of incompatible observables $A$ and $B$. They are better than the variance-based uncertainty relations because they only depend on the Born statistics of the outcomes and not on the outcomes themselves, and because bounds $γ$ typically are state independent. Here we provide a state-independent lower bound $γ_s$ that is better than the textbook Maassen-Uffink bound and, in the limit of the parameter $s\to 2$, becomes asymptotically tight for all $A,B$. The bound can be extended to Renyi entropies. Optimality of entropic uncertainty relations

Kais Abdelkhalek, René Schwonnek, Hans Maassen +5 more

The entropic uncertainty relation proven by Maassen and Uffink for arbitrary pairs of two observables is known to be nonoptimal. Here, we call an uncertainty relation optimal, if the lower bound can be attained for any value of either of the corresponding uncertainties. In this work, we establish optimal uncertainty relations by characterizing the optimal lower bound in scenarios similar to the Maassen–Uffink type. We disprove a conjecture by Englert et al. and generalize various previous results. However, we are still far from a complete understanding and, based on numerical investigation and analytical results in small dimension, we present a number of conjectures.

Sequences of lower bounds for entropic uncertainty relations from bistochastic maps

Paolo Giorda

Abstract Given two orthonormal bases A and B , the basic form of the entropic uncertainty principle is stated in terms of the sum of the Shannon entropies of the probabilities of measuring A and B onto a given quantum state. State independent lower bounds for this sum encapsulate the degree of incompatibility of the observables diagonal in the A and B bases, and are usually derived by extracting as much information as possible from the unitary operator U connecting the two bases. Here we show a strategy to derive sequences of lower bounds based on alternating sequences of measurements onto A and B . The problem can be mapped into the multiple application of bistochastic processes that can be described by the powers of the unistochastic matrices directly derivable from U . By means of several examples we study the applicability of the method. The results obtained show that the strategy can allow for an advantage both in the pure state and in the mixed state scenario. The sequence of lower bounds is obtained with resources which are polynomial in the dimension of the underlying Hilbert space, and it is thus suitable for studying high dimensional cases.

Entropic uncertainty principle for mixed states

Antonio F. Rotundo, René Schwonnek

The entropic uncertainty principle in the form proven by Maassen and Uffink yields a fundamental inequality that is prominently used in many places all over the field of quantum information theory. In this paper, we provide a family of versatile generalizations of this relation. Our proof methods build on a deep connection between entropic uncertainties and interpolation inequalities for the doubly stochastic map that links probability distributions in two measurement bases. In contrast to the original relation, our generalization also incorporates the von Neumann entropy of the underlying quantum state. These results can be directly used to bound the extractable randomness of a source-independent quantum random number generator in the presence of fully quantum attacks, to certify entanglement between trusted parties, or to bound the entanglement of a system with an untrusted environment.

Entropic uncertainty relations H(A)+H(B)⩾γH(A)+H(B)\geqslant γH(A)+H(B)⩾γ give a nonzero lower bound γγγ to the sum of the Shannon entropies HHH of the outcome probabilities of incompatible observables AAA and BBB.
