BCS–BEC Crossover in Two-Dimensional Attractive Hubbard Model under Magnetic Field

Abstract

The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model under the magnetic field is discussed at the half-filling at T=0 K on the basis of the formalism of Eagles and Leggett. It is shown that the so-called Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov-like state with a non-zero center-of-mass wave vector ${\bf q}\not=0$ is not stabilized in the weak-coupling (BCS) region, while such a state with ${\bf q}\not=0$ is stabilized against that with ${\bf q}=0$ even in a wide strong-coupling (BEC) region where di-fermion molecules are formed. The physical implication of this surprising result is discussed.

Two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model and the BCS-BEC crossover

Rodrigo A. Fontenele, Natanael C. Costa, Raimundo R. dos Santos +1 more

Recent experiments with ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices have provided a tuneable and clean realization of the attractive Hubbard model (AHM). In view of this, several physical properties may be thoroughly studied across the crossover between weak [Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer, (BCS)] and strong [Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)] couplings. Here we report on extensive determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) studies of the AHM on a square lattice from which several different quantities have been calculated and should be useful as a road map to experiments. We have obtained a detailed phase diagram for the critical superconducting temperature ${T}_{c}$ in terms of the band filling $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and interaction strength $U$ from which we pinpoint a somewhat wide region $|U|/t\ensuremath{\approx}5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ ($t$ is the hopping amplitude) and $\ensuremath{\langle}n\ensuremath{\rangle}\ensuremath{\approx}0.79\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09$ leading to a maximum ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}0.16t$. Two additional temperature scales, namely, pairing ${T}_{p}$ and degeneracy ${T}_{d}$ have been highlighted: The former sets the scale for pair formation (believed to be closely related to the scale for the gap of spin excitations in cuprates), whereas the latter sets the scale for dominant quantum effects. Our DQMC data for the distribution of doubly occupied sites for the momentum distribution function, and for the quasiparticle weight show distinctive features on both sides of the BCS-BEC crossover, being also suggestive of an underlying crossover between Fermi- and non-Fermi liquid behaviors.

BCS-BEC crossover and the disappearance of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov correlations in a spin-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, Adrian E. Feiguin, Ulrich Schollwöck +1 more

We present a numerical study of the one-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover of a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. The crossover is described by the Bose-Fermi resonance model in a real space representation. Our main interest is in the behavior of the pair correlations, which, in the BCS limit, are of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type, while in the Bose-Einstein condensate limit, a superfluid of diatomic molecules forms that exhibits quasi-condensation at zero momentum. We use the density matrix renormalization group method to compute the phase diagram as a function of the detuning of the molecular level and the polarization. As a main result, we show that FFLO-like correlations disappear well below full polarization close to the resonance. The critical polarization depends on both the detuning and the filling.

Pair condensation in the BCS-BEC crossover of ultracold atoms loaded onto a two-dimensional square lattice

Luca Salasnich, Flavio Toigo

We investigate the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of strongly bound molecular dimers in a gas of ultracold atoms loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice. By using the mean-field BCS equations of the emerging Hubbard model and the concept of off-diagonal long-range order for fermions we calculate analytically and numerically the pair binding energy, the energy gap, and the condensate fraction of Cooper pairs as a function of interaction strength and filling factor of atoms in the lattice at zero temperature.

Altermagnetism across the BCS-BEC crossover

Iogann Tolbatov, Luca Salasnich

We study a two-dimensional paired Fermi system in which altermagnetism produces a spin splitting that depends on momentum. The interaction strength is described through the two-body binding energy, so that the chemical potential and pairing gap evolve self-consistently from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime to the strong-coupling Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) regime at fixed density. The stability of the uniform paired state is examined by giving the pairs a small center-of-mass momentum and following the resulting change in free energy. We show that at zero temperature, the phase stiffness follows a universal quadratic suppression, $J/J_0 = 1 - (α/α_0)^2$, across the entire fully gapped crossover regime. Deviations from this relation emerge only on the BCS side upon the opening of gapless Bogoliubov pockets, which rapidly reduce the stiffness and can trigger an instability toward finite-momentum pairing. In the BEC regime, this universal quadratic correction corresponds to the altered effective mass of the tightly bound composite bosons. The model therefore provides a simple setting in which to compare altermagnetic pair breaking on the BCS and BEC sides of the crossover.

Population-imbalanced lattice fermions near the BCS-BEC crossover: Thermal physics of the breached pair and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases

Madhuparna Karmakar, Pinaki Majumdar

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via a Monte Carlo approach. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for amplitude- and phase-fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram of this strong-coupling problem. At low field we observe the magnetized but homogeneous ``breached pair'' superfluid phase. It reveals that ${T}_{c}$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean-field estimate, spontaneous inhomogeneity in the field-induced magnetization, and a strong nonmonotonicity in the temperature dependence of the low-energy density of states. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram of the imbalanced Fermi gas at unitarity. At higher field we obtain the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. The thermal transition from the FFLO phases to the normal state is strongly first order. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low ${T}_{c}$ itself, while the spin-resolved density of states changes from the ``pseudogapped'' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature.
