Landau-like states in neutral particles

Abstract

We show the emergence of a new type of dispersion relation for neutral atoms with an interesting similarity to the spectrum of two-dimensional electrons in an applied perpendicular constant magnetic field. These neutral atoms can be confined in toroidal optical traps and give quasi-Landau spectra. In strong contrast to the equidistant infinitely degenerate Landau levels for charged particles, the spectral gap for such two-dimensional neutral particles increases in particular electric-field configurations. The idea in the paper is motivated by the development in cold atom experiments and builds on the seminal paper of Aharonov and Casher [Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 319 (1984)].

Landau-like quantized levels of neutral atom induced by a dark-soliton shaped electric field*

Yueming Wang, Zhen Jin

Motivated by the fascinating progresses in the cold atom experiments and theories, especially the artificial gauge field induced spin–orbit coupling of neutral atoms, we present a novel dispersion of neutral atoms carrying a non-vanishing magnetic moment in a special gauge field, an external electric field of dark-soliton shaped profile. By means of WKB approximation, we obtain discrete quantized landau-like energy levels, which is instructive for the quantum Hall effect of neutral particles. The observability of the results is also discussed.

Relativistic Landau quantization for a neutral particle

K. Bakke, Claudio Furtado

In this contribution we study the Landau levels arising within the relativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle with a permanent magnetic dipole moment interacting with an external electric field. We consider the Aharonov-Casher coupling of the magnetic dipole to the electric field and investigate an analog of Landau quantization in this system for two different field configurations. In both cases we obtain the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian.

Quantização de Landau para partículas neutras emanéis quânticos

Lincoanderson Oliveira Dantas

In this work, we shall show that a Landau quantization analog is possible for neutral particles in two-dimensional quantum rings. For that we have used the Tan Inkson model for a quantum ring to confine neutral atoms in the ring. We have also used two different fields configurations to induce a electric dipole moment on the particle. In addition, we have made a review of some quantum effects, such that Aharonov-Bohm like effects and Landau quantization for neutral and charged particles.

Analog of landau Levels to Electric Dipole

Leandro Rodrigo Ribeiro, Claudio Furtado, Jose Roberto Nascimento

In this article we discuss the analogy between the dynamics of a neutral particle with an electric dipole, in the presence of configuration of magnetic field, with Landau level quantization for charged particle. We analyze this quantization based on the He-Mckelar-Wilkens interaction developed of similar way that Ericsson and Sj\\"oqvist[Phys Rev. A {\\bf 65} 013607 (2001)] was analyzed the Landau-Aharonov-Casher effect. The energy level and eingenfuctions and eigenvalues are obtained.

Filled Landau levels in neutral quantum gases

Patrik Öhberg, Gediminas Juzeliūnas, Julius Ruseckas +1 more

We consider the signatures of the integer quantum Hall effect in a degenerate gas of electrically neutral atomic fermions. An effective magnetic field is achieved by applying two incident light beams with a high orbital angular momentum. We show how states corresponding to completely filled Landau levels are obtained and discuss various possibilities to measure the incompressible nature of the trapped two-dimensional gas.

Magnetic trapping of neutral atoms

T. H. Bergeman, H. Metcalf

We have been studying the use of inhomogeneous magnetic fields for the trapping of neutral atoms via the interaction with their magnetic moments. Apart from gravitational forces (which may turn out to be of great importance in atom traps), only electromagnetic forces are of real interest for trapping neutral atoms, and these forces must necessarily arise from the interaction of multipole moments and inhomogeneous fields. In this paper we restrict ourselves to static traps and magnetic dipoles, even though optical, quasi‐static, and Stark effect traps have been discussed. We present some discussion of the field configurations that might be used, of the motion of ‘‘warm’’ trapped atoms (about 1 K), and of the states of ‘‘cold’’ trapped atoms (about 0.1 μK). The basic scale of the interaction is set by the ratio of the Bohr magneton to the Boltzmann constant, about 1.5 Tesla/Kelvin.
