Entanglement Entropy of Electromagnetic Edge Modes

Abstract

The vacuum entanglement entropy of Maxwell theory, when evaluated by standard methods, contains an unexpected term with no known statistical interpretation. We resolve this two-decades old puzzle by showing that this term is the entanglement entropy of edge modes: classical solutions determined by the electric field normal to the entangling surface. We explain how the heat kernel regularization applied to this term leads to the negative divergent expression found by Kabat. This calculation also resolves a recent puzzle concerning the logarithmic divergences of gauge fields in 3+1 dimensions.

Vacuum entanglement and black hole entropy of gauge fields

William Donnelly

Black holes in general relativity carry an entropy whose value is given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula, but whose statistical origin remains obscure. Such horizons also possess an entanglement entropy, which has a clear statistical meaning but no a priori relation to the dynamics of gravity. For free minimally-coupled scalar and spinor fields, these two quantities are intimately related: the entanglement entropy is the one-loop correction to the black hole entropy due to renormalization of Newton's constant. For gauge fields, the entanglement entropy and the one-loop correction to the black hole entropy differ. This dissertation addresses two issues concerning the entanglement entropy of gauge fields, and its relation black hole entropy. First, for abelian gauge fields Kabat identified a negative divergent contribution to the black hole entropy that is not part of the entanglement entropy, known as a ``contact term''. We show that the contact term can be attributed to an ambiguous expression for the gauge field's contribution to the Wald entropy. Moreover, in two-dimensional de Sitter space, the contact term arises from an incorrect treatment of zero modes and is therefore unphysical. In a manifestly gauge-invariant reduced phase space quantization of two-dimensional gauge theory, the gauge field contribution to the entropy is positive, finite, and equal to the entanglement entropy. This suggests that the contact term in more than two dimensions may also be unphysical. Second, we consider lattice gauge theory and point out that the Hilbert space corresponding to a region of space includes edge states that transform nontrivially under gauge transformations. By decomposing these edge states in irreducible representations of the gauge group, the entanglement entropy of an arbitrary state is shown to be a sum of a bulk entropy and a boundary entropy associated to the edge states. This entropy formula agrees with the two-dimensional results from the reduced phase space quantization. These results are applied to several examples, including the ground state in the strong coupling expansion of Kogut and Susskind, and the entropy of the edge states is found to be the dominant contribution to the entanglement entropy.

Entanglement entropy for a Maxwell field: Numerical calculation on a two-dimensional lattice

Horacio Casini, Marina Huerta

We study entanglement entropy (EE) for a Maxwell field in $(2+1)$ dimensions. We do numerical calculations in two-dimensional lattices. This gives a concrete example of the general results of our recent work [1] on entropy for lattice gauge fields using an algebraic approach. To evaluate the entropies we extend the standard calculation methods for the entropy of Gaussian states in canonical commutation algebras to the more general case of algebras with center and arbitrary numerical commutators. We find that while the entropy depends on the details of the algebra choice, mutual information has a well defined continuum limit as predicted in [1]. We study several universal terms for the entropy of the Maxwell field and compare with the case of a massless scalar field. We find some interesting new phenomena: an ``evanescent'' logarithmically divergent term in the entropy with topological coefficient which does not have any correspondence with ultraviolet entanglement in the universal quantities, and a nonstandard way in which strong subadditivity is realized. Based on the results of our calculations we propose a generalization of strong subadditivity for the entropy on some algebras that are not in tensor product.

Gauge-invariant variables and entanglement entropy

Abhishek Agarwal, Dimitra Karabali A, V. P. Nair

The entanglement entropy (EE) of gauge theories in three spacetime dimensions is analyzed using manifestly gauge-invariant variables defined directly in the continuum. Specifically, we focus on the Maxwell, Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS), and non-Abelian Yang-Mills theories. Special attention is paid to the analysis of edge modes and their contribution to EE. The contact term is derived without invoking the replica method and its physical origin is traced to the phase space volume measure for the edge modes. The topological contribution to the EE for the MCS case is calculated. For all the Abelian cases, the EE presented in this paper agrees with known results in the literature. The EE for the non-Abelian theory is computed in a gauge-invariant Gaussian approximation, which incorporates the dynamically generated mass gap. A formulation of the contact term for the non-Abelian case is also presented.

Entanglement entropy and the boundary action of edge modes

Jyotirmoy Mukherjee

A bstract We consider an antisymmetric gauge field in the Minkowski space of d -dimension and decompose it in terms of the antisymmetric tensor harmonics and fix the gauge. The Gauss law implies that the normal component of the field strength on the spherical entangling surface will label the superselection sectors. From the two-point function of the field strength on the sphere, we evaluate the logarithmic divergent term of the entanglement entropy of edge modes of p -form field. We observe that the logarithmic divergent term in entanglement entropy of edge modes coincides with the edge partition function of co-exact p -form on the sphere when expressed in terms of the Harish-Chandra characters. We also develop a boundary path integral of the antisymmetric p -form gauge field. From the boundary path integral, we show that the edge mode partition function corresponds to the co-exact ( p − 1)-forms on the boundary. This boundary path integral agrees with the direct evaluation of the entanglement entropy of edge modes extracted from the two-point function of the normal component of the field strength on the entangling surface.

Entanglement in BF theory. Part II. Edge-modes

Jackson R. Fliss, Stathis Vitouladitis

A bstract We consider the entanglement entropy arising from edge-modes in Abelian p -form topological field theories in d dimensions on arbitrary spatial topology and across arbitrary entangling surfaces. We find a series of descending area laws plus universal corrections proportional to the Betti numbers of the entangling surface, which can be taken as a higher- dimensional version of the “topological entanglement entropy”. Our calculation comes in two flavors: firstly, through an induced edge-mode theory appearing on the regulated entangling surface in a replica path integral and secondly through a more rigorous definition of the entanglement entropy through an extended Hilbert space. Along the way we establish several key results that are of their own merit. We explain how the edge-mode theory is a novel combination of ( p − 1)-form and ( d – p − 2)-form Maxwell theories linked by a chirality condition, in what we coin a chiral mixed Maxwell theory . We explicitly evaluate the thermal partition function of this theory. Additionally we show that the extended Hilbert space is completely organized into representations of an infinite-dimensional, centrally extended current algebra which naturally generalizes 2d Kac-Moody algebras to arbitrary dimension and topology. We construct the Verma modules and the representation characters of this algebra. Lastly, we connect the two approaches, showing that the thermal partition function of the chiral mixed Maxwell theory is precisely an extended representation character of our current algebra, establishing an exact correspondence of the edge-mode theory and the entanglement spectrum.
