Abstract

We demonstrate that a Weyl point, widely examined in 3D Weyl semimetals and superfluids, can develop a pair of nondegenerate gapless spheres. Such a bouquet of two spheres is characterized by three distinct topological invariants of manifolds with full energy gaps, i.e., the Chern number of a 0D point inside one developed sphere, the winding number of a 1D loop around the original Weyl point, and the Chern number of a 2D surface enclosing the whole bouquet. We show that such structured Weyl points can be realized in the superfluid quasiparticle spectrum of a 3D degenerate Fermi gas subject to spin-orbit couplings and Zeeman fields, which supports Fulde-Ferrell superfluids as the ground state.

Structured Weyl Points in Fulde-Ferrell Superfluids

We demonstrate that a Weyl point, widely examined in 3D Weyl semimetals and superfluids, can develop a pair of non-degenerate gapless spheres. Such a {\em bouquet of two spheres} is characterized by {\em three distinct} topological invariants of manifolds with full energy gaps, i.e., the Chern number of a 0D point inside one developed sphere, the winding number of a 1D loop around the original Weyl point, and the Chern number of a 2D surface enclosing the whole bouquet. Three-dimensional spin–orbit coupled Fermi gases: Fulde–Ferrell pairing, Majorana fermions, Weyl fermions, and gapless topological superfluidity

Xia-Ji Liu, Hui Hu, Han Pu

We theoretically investigate a three-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin–orbit coupling in the presence of both out-of-plane and in-plane Zeeman fields. We show that, driven by a sufficiently large Zeeman field, either out-of-plane or in-plane, the superfluid phase of this system exhibits a number of interesting features, including inhomogeneous Fulde–Ferrell pairing, gapped or gapless topological order, and exotic quasi-particle excitations known as Weyl fermions that have linear energy dispersions in momentum space (i.e., massless Dirac fermions). The topological superfluid phase can have either four or two topologically protected Weyl nodes. We present the phase diagrams at both zero and finite temperatures and discuss the possibility of their observation in an atomic Fermi gas with synthetic spin–orbit coupling. In this context, topological superfluid phase with an imperfect Rashba spin–orbit coupling is also studied.

Anisotropic Weyl Fermions from the Quasiparticle Excitation Spectrum of a 3D Fulde-Ferrell Superfluid

Yong Xu, Rui-Lin Chu, Chuanwei Zhang

Weyl fermions, first proposed for describing massless chiral Dirac fermions in particle physics, have not been observed yet in experiments. Recently, much effort has been devoted to explore Weyl fermions around band touching points of single-particle energy dispersions in certain solid state materials (named Weyl semimetals), similar as graphene for Dirac fermions. Here we show that such Weyl semimetals also exist in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Fulde-Ferrell superfluid. By varying Zeeman fields, the properties of Weyl fermions, such as their creation and annihilation, number and position, as well as anisotropic linear dispersions around band touching points, can be tuned. We study the manifestation of anisotropic Weyl fermions in sound speeds of Fulde-Ferrell fermionic superfluids, which are detectable in experiments.

Topological Fulde–Ferrell superfluids of a spin–orbit coupled Fermi gas

Yong Xu, Chuanwei Zhang

Topological Fermi superfluids have played the central role in various fields of physics. However, all previous studies focus on the cases where Cooper pairs have zero center-of-mass momenta (i.e., normal superfluids). The topology of Fulde–Ferrell (FF) superfluids with nonzero momentum pairings have never been explored until recent findings that FF superfluids in a spin–orbit (SO) coupled Fermi gas can accommodate Majorana fermions in real space in low dimensions and Weyl fermions in momentum space in three dimension. In this review, we first discuss the mechanism of pairings in SO coupled Fermi gases in optical lattices subject to Zeeman fields, showing that SO coupling as well as Zeeman fields enhance FF states while suppress Larkin–Ovchinnikov states. We then present the low temperature phase diagram including both FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids phases in both two dimension and three dimension. In one dimension, Majorana fermions as well as phase dependent order parameter are visualized. In three dimension, we show the properties of Weyl fermions in momentum space such as anisotropic linear dispersion, Fermi arch, and gaplessness away from k⊥ = 0. Finally, we discuss some possible methods to probe FF superfluids and topological FF superfluids in cold atom systems.

From a semimetal to a chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid

Ting Fung Jeffrey Poon, Xiong-Jun Liu

The recent realization of two-dimensional (2D) synthetic spin-orbit (SO) coupling opens a broad avenue to explore novel topological states for ultracold atoms. Here, we propose a scheme to realize chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid for ultracold fermions, and show a generic theory that the topology of chiral superfluid phases can be uniquely determined from the normal states. The main findings are twofold. First, a semimetal is driven by a type of 2D SO coupling, and can be tuned into massive Dirac fermion phase with or without inversion symmetry. Without inversion symmetry, the superfluid phase of nonzero pairing momentum is favored under an attractive interaction. Furthermore, we show a fundamental theorem that the Chern number of a 2D chiral superfluid can be obtained from the 1D invariants of Fermi surfaces, with which the chiral Fulde-Ferrell superfluid with a broad topological region is predicted. This generic theorem is also useful for condensed-matter physics and material science in the search for new topological superconductors.

Gapless Topological Fulde-Ferrell Superfluidity in Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gases

Ye Cao, S.-H. Zou, Xia-Ji Liu +3 more

Topological superfluids usually refer to a superfluid state which is gapped in the bulk but metallic at the boundary. Here we report that a gapless, topologically nontrivial superfluid with an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell pairing order parameter can emerge in a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas, in the presence of both in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. The Fulde-Ferrell pairing-induced by the spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field-is responsible for this gapless feature. This exotic superfluid has a significant Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature and has robust Majorana edge modes against disorder owing to its topological nature.
