Abstract

We investigate different ground-state phases of attractive spin-imbalanced populations of fermions in three-dimensional optical lattices. Detailed numerical calculations are performed using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to determine the ground-state properties systematically for different values of density, spin polarization and interaction strength. We first consider the high density and low polarization regime, in which the effect of the optical lattice is most evident. We then proceed to the low density and high polarization regime where the effects of the underlying lattice are less significant and the system begins to resemble a continuum Fermi gas. We explore the effects of density, polarization and interaction on the character of the phases in each regime and highlight the qualitative differences between the two regimes. In the high-density regime, the order is found to be of Larkin-Ovchinnikov type, linearly oriented with one characteristic wave vector but varying in its direction with the parameters. At lower densities the order parameter develops more structures involving multiple wave vectors.

Phases of attractive spin-imbalanced fermions in square lattices

Simone Chiesa, Shiwei Zhang

We determine the relative stability of different ground-state phases of spin-imbalanced populations of attractive fermions in square lattices. The ground state is determined within Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, with care taken to remove finite-size effects. The phases are systematically characterized by the symmetry of the order parameter and their real- and momentum-space structures. For quarter- to half-filled lattices, where the Fermi surfaces are most distorted from their spherical counterpart in the continuum, we predominantly find unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinikov-type phases. We discuss the effect of commensuration between the ordering wave vector and the density imbalance and describe the mechanism of Fermi surface reconstruction and pairing for various orders. A robust supersolid phase exists when the ordering wave vector is diagonally directed. Charge and pairing order coexist, rather than compete, and are responsible for the opening of the gap on different portions of the Fermi surface. A variational determination of the correct pair momentum of the Larkin-Ovchinikov phases shows that phase separation does not occur in the considered regime of density and magnetization.

Exotic Superfluid Phases in Spin-Polarized Fermi Gases in Optical Lattices

Ettore Vitali, Peter Rosenberg, Shiwei Zhang

Leveraging cutting-edge numerical methodologies, we study the ground state of the two-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas in an optical lattice. We focus on systems at high density and small spin polarization, corresponding to the parameter regime believed to be most favorable to the formation of the elusive Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluid phase. Our systematic study of large lattice sizes, hosting nearly 500 atoms, provides strong evidence of the stability of the FFLO state in this regime, as well as a high-accuracy characterization of its properties. Our results for the density correlation function reveal the existence of density order in the system, suggesting the possibility of an intricate coexistence of long-range orders in the ground state. The ground-state properties are seen to differ significantly from the standard mean-field description, providing a compelling avenue for future theoretical and experimental explorations of the interplay between spin imbalance, strong interactions, and superfluidity in an exotic phase of matter.

Exploring exotic superfluidity of polarized ultracold fermions in optical lattices

Yan Chen, Z. D. Wang, Fu‐Chun Zhang +1 more

Superfluidity with imbalanced populations of harmonically trapped ultracold fermions in a two-dimensional optical lattice is investigated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The intriguing richness of patterns between competing ferromagnetic and superfluid phases for different filling densities has been revealed. At low density, the main experimental features could be reproduced, especially the bimodal distribution of ferromagnetism. The superfluid-pairing gap oscillates radially, demonstrating the realization of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. In the high-density regime, another type of FFLO state with gap oscillation along the angular direction shows up and the accompanying ferromagnetic order modulates accordingly. The square lattice like FFLO state may appear at the intermediate densities. Moreover, we suggest other experimental proposals of observing the unique FFLO features straightforwardly.

Superfluid density of the ultra-cold Fermi gas in optical lattices

Tomi Paananen

In this paper we study the superfluid density of the two component Fermi gas in optical lattices with population imbalance. Three different type of phases, the BCS-state (Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer), the FFLO-state (Fulde, Ferrel, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov), and the Sarma state, are considered. We show that the FFLO superfluid density differs from the BCS/Sarma superfluid density in an important way. Although there are dynamical instabilities in the FFLO phase, when the interaction is strong or densities are high, on the weak coupling limit the FFLO phase is found to be stable.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov oscillations in harmonically trapped optical lattices

M. Iskin, Carl J. Williams

The attractive Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian is solved via the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism to analyze the ground state phases of population imbalanced two-component fermion mixtures in harmonically trapped optical lattices. In the low density limit, the superfluid order parameter has Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap edges to accommodate the unpaired fermions that are pushed away from the trap center with a single peak in their density. However, in the high density limit, while the order parameter has oscillations in the radial direction towards the trap center for low imbalances, it also has oscillations towards the trap edges with increasing imbalance until the superfluid to normal phase transition occurs beyond a critical imbalance. This leads to a single peak in the density of unpaired fermions for low and high imbalances, but leads to double peaks for intermediate imbalances.

Cold Attractive Spin Polarized Fermi Lattice Gases and the Doped Positive U Hubbard Model

Adriana Moreo, Douglas J. Scalapino

Experiments on polarized fermion gases performed by trapping ultracold atoms in optical lattices allow the study of an attractive Hubbard model for which the strength of the on-site interaction is tuned by means of a Feshbach resonance. Using a well-known particle-hole transformation we discuss how results obtained for this system can be reinterpreted in the context of a doped repulsive Hubbard model. In particular, we show that the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state corresponds to the striped state of the two-dimensional doped positive U Hubbard model. We then use the results of numerical studies of the striped state to relate the periodicity of the FFLO state to the spin polarization. We also comment on the relationship of the d(x(2)-y(2)) superconducting phase of the doped 2D repulsive Hubbard model to a d-wave spin density wave state for the attractive case.
