Abstract

We study a system of two bosons of one species and a third atom of a second species in a one-dimensional parabolic trap at zero temperature. We assume contact repulsive inter- and intraspecies interactions. By means of an exact diagonalization method we calculate the ground and excited states for the whole range of interactions. We use discrete group theory to classify the eigenstates according to the symmetry of the interaction potential. We also propose and validate analytical Ans\"atze gaining physical insight over the numerically obtained wave functions. We show that, for both approaches, it is crucial to take into account that the distinguishability of the third atom implies the absence of any restriction over the wave function when interchanging this boson with any of the other two. We find that there are degeneracies in the spectra in some limiting regimes, that is, when the interspecies and/or the intraspecies interactions tend to infinity. This is in contrast with the three-identical boson system, where no degeneracy occurs in these limits. We show that, when tuning both types of interactions through a protocol that keeps them equal while they are increased towards infinity, the systems's ground state resembles that of three indistinguishable bosons. Contrarily, the systems's ground state is different from that of three-identical bosons when both types of interactions are increased towards infinity through protocols that do not restrict them to be equal. We study the coherence and correlations of the system as the interactions are tuned through different protocols, which permit us to build up different correlations in the system and lead to different spatial distributions of the three atoms.

Quantum correlations and degeneracy of identical bosons in a two-dimensional harmonic trap

Pere Mujal, Enric Sarlé, A. Polls +1 more

We consider a small number of identical bosons trapped in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and also the $N$-boson system when it is feasible. The atom-atom interaction is modeled by means of a finite-range Gaussian interaction. The spectral properties of the system are scrutinized and, in particular, we derive analytic expressions for the degeneracies and their breaking for the lower-energy states at small but finite interactions. We demonstrate that the degeneracy of the low-energy states is independent of the number of particles in the noninteracting limit and also for sufficiently weak interactions. In the strongly interacting regime, we show how the many-body wave function develops holes whenever two particles are at the same position in space to avoid the interaction, a mechanism reminiscent of the Tonks-Girardeau gas in one dimension. The evolution of the system as the interaction is increased is studied by means of the density profiles, pair correlations, and fragmentation of the ground state for $N=2$, 3, and 4 bosons.

Correlation properties of a three-body bosonic mixture in a harmonic trap

R. E. Barfknecht, A S Dehkharghani, Angela Foerster +1 more

Abstract We make use of a simple pair correlated wave function approach to obtain results for the ground-state densities and momentum distribution of a one-dimensional three-body bosonic system with different interactions in a harmonic trap. For equal interactions this approach is able to reproduce the known analytical cases of zero and infinite repulsion. We show that our results for the correlations agree with the exact diagonalization in all interaction regimes and with analytical results for the strongly repulsive impurity. This method also enables us to access the more complicated cases of mixed interactions, and the probability densities of these systems are analyzed.

Ground-state of interacting bosons in an arbitrary one-dimensional potential: variational approach

Przemysław Kościk, Arkadiusz Kuroś, Adam Pieprzycki +1 more

We derive and describe a very accurate variational scheme for the ground state of the system of a few ultra-cold bosons confined in one-dimensional traps of arbitrary shapes. It is based on assumption that all inter-particle correlations have two-body nature. By construction, the proposed ansatz is exact in the noninteracting limit, exactly encodes boundary conditions forced by contact interactions, and gives full control on accuracy in the limit of infinite repulsions. We show its efficiency in a whole range of intermediate interactions for different external potentials. Our results manifest that for generic non-parabolic potentials mutual correlations forced by interactions cannot be captured by distance-dependent functions.

Exact solutions for interacting boson systems under rotation

We study a class of interacting, harmonically trapped boson systems at angular momentum L. The Hamiltonian leaves a L-dimensional subspace invariant, and this permits an explicit solution of several eigenstates and energies for a wide class of two-body interactions. Present experiments and much theoretical work [3–7] focus on the Thomas-Fermi regime of short coherence length [14]. The opposite limit of perturbatively weak contact interactions is not yet realized experimentally but is of theoretical interest as well [8–13]. The case of attractive interactions was studied by Wilkin et al. [9]. Mottelson developed a theory for repulsive interactions [10], and Kavoulakis et al. [12] and Jackson et al. [13] compared mean field and exact numerical results. Exact diagonalization techniques by us showed that the ground state energy depends linearly on angular momentum and led to an analytical expression for the ground state wave function [11]. Recently, the form of this wave function and its eigenenergy were confirmed in analytic calculations [15–17]. However, we still lack insight about why certain eigenstates turn out to be simple analytical functions. We show in this paper that there is a subspace structure that explains these findings. Interestingly, this structure is not limited to the two-body contact interaction considered in previous investigations but present in a rather large class of Hamiltonians. Quantum correlations and spatial localization in trapped one-dimensional ultra-cold Bose–Bose–Bose mixtures

Tran Duong Anh-Tai, Miguel Ángel García-March, Thomas Busch +1 more

Abstract We systematically investigate and illustrate the complete ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional, three-species mixture of a few repulsively interacting bosons trapped harmonically. To numerically obtain the solutions to the many-body Schrödinger equation, we employ the improved Exact Diagonalization method (Anh-Tai et al 2023 SciPost Phys. 15 048), which is capable of treating strongly-correlated few-body systems from first principles in an efficiently truncated Hilbert space. We present our comprehensive results for all possible combinations of intra- and interspecies interactions in the extreme limits that are either the ideal limit (g = 0) or close to the hard-core limit ( g → ∞ ). These results show the emergence of unique ground-state properties related to correlations, coherence and spatial localization stemming from strongly repulsive interactions.
