Convexity of the Entanglement Entropy of SU( 2N )-Symmetric Fermions with Attractive Interactions

Abstract

The positivity of the probability measure of attractively interacting systems of 2N-component fermions enables the derivation of an exact convexity property for the ground-state energy of such systems. Using analogous arguments, applied to path-integral expressions for the entanglement entropy derived recently, we prove nonperturbative analytic relations for the Rényi entropies of those systems. These relations are valid for all subsystem sizes, particle numbers, and dimensions, and in arbitrary external trapping potentials.

Entanglement Entropy in Fermi Gases and Anderson’s Orthogonality Catastrophe

Alexander Ossipov

We study the ground-state entanglement entropy of a finite subsystem of size L of an infinite system of noninteracting fermions scattered by a potential of finite range a. We derive a general relation between the scattering matrix and the overlap matrix and use it to prove that for a one-dimensional symmetric potential the von Neumann entropy, the Rényi entropies, and the full counting statistics are robust against potential scattering, provided that L/a≫1. The results of numerical calculations support the validity of this conclusion for a generic potential.

Bounds on the entanglement entropy by the number entropy in non-interacting fermionic systems

Maximilian Kiefer-Emmanouilidis, Razmik Unanyan, Jesko Sirker +1 more

Entanglement in a pure state of a many-body system can be characterized by the Rényi entropies S^{(\alpha)}=\ln\textrm{tr}(\rho^\alpha)/(1-\alpha) S ( α ) = ln tr ( ρ α ) / ( 1 − α ) of the reduced density matrix \rho ρ of a subsystem. These entropies are, however, difficult to access experimentally and can typically be determined for small systems only. Here we show that for free fermionic systems in a Gaussian state and with particle number conservation, S^{(2)} S ( 2 ) can be tightly bound—from above and below—by the much easier accessible Rényi number entropy S^{(2)}_N=-\ln \sum_n p^2(n) S N ( 2 ) = − ln ∑ n p 2 ( n ) which is a function of the probability distribution p(n) p ( n ) of the total particle number in the considered subsystem only. A dynamical growth in entanglement, in particular, is therefore always accompanied by a growth—albeit logarithmically slower—of the number entropy. We illustrate this relation by presenting numerical results for quenches in non-interacting one-dimensional lattice models including disorder-free, Anderson-localized, and critical systems with off-diagonal (bond) disorder.

Exact relations between particle fluctuations and entanglement in Fermi gases

Pasquale Calabrese, Mihail Mintchev, Ettore Vicari

We derive exact relations between the Rényi entanglement entropies and the particle-number fluctuations of (connected and disjoint) spatial regions in systems of N non-interacting fermions in arbitrary dimension. We prove that the asymptotic large- N behavior of the entanglement entropies is proportional to the variance of the particle number. We also consider 1D Fermi gases with a localized impurity, where all particle cumulants contribute to the asymptotic large- N behavior of the entanglement entropies. The particle cumulant expansion turns out to be convergent for all integer-order Rényi entropies (except for the von Neumann entropy) and the first few cumulants provide already a good approximation. Since the particle cumulants are accessible to experiments, these relations may provide a measure of entanglement in these systems.

Entanglement entropy of fermions from Wigner functions: Excited states and open quantum systems

Saranyo Moitra, Rajdeep Sensarma

We formulate a new ``Wigner characteristics''-based method to calculate entanglement entropies of subsystems of Fermions using Keldysh field theory. This bypasses the requirements of working with complicated manifolds for calculating R\'enyi entropies for many-body systems. We provide an exact analytic formula for R\'enyi and von Neumann entanglement entropies of noninteracting open quantum systems, which are initialized in arbitrary Fock states. We use this formalism to look at entanglement entropies of momentum Fock states of one-dimensional Fermions. We show that the entanglement entropy of a Fock state can scale either logarithmically or linearly with subsystem size, depending on whether the number of discontinuities in the momentum distribution is smaller or larger than the subsystem size. We also use this formalism to describe entanglement dynamics of an open quantum system starting with a single domain wall at the center of the system. Using entanglement entropy and mutual information, we understand the dynamics in terms of coherent motion of the domain wall wavefronts, creation and annihilation of domain walls, and incoherent exchange of particles with the bath.
