Pairing correlations of cold fermionic gases at overflow from a narrow to a wide harmonic trap

Abstract

Within the context of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, we study the behavior of superfluid Fermi systems when they pass from a small to a large container. Such systems can be now realized thanks to recent progress in experimental techniques. It will allow researchers to better understand pairing properties at overflow and in general in rapidly varying external potentials.

Suppression of Superfluidity upon Overflow of Trapped Fermions: Quantal and Thomas-Fermi Studies

Peter Schuck, X. Viñas

Two issues are treated in this work. (i) The generic fact that, if a fermionic superfluid in the BCS regime overflows from a narrow container into a much wider one, pairing is much suppressed at the overflow point. Physical examples where this feature may play an important role are discussed. (ii) A Thomas-Fermi approach to inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi systems is presented and shown to work well in cases where the local density approximation breaks down.

Two examples pertinent to the physics of the outer crust of neutron stars and superfluid fermionic atoms in traps will be presented, (ii) A novel Thomas-Fermi approach to inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi-systems is presented and shown that it works well in cases where the local density approximation breaks down.

Thomas—Fermi Studies of Pairing in Inhomogeneous Systems: Nuclear and Cold Atom Systems at Overflow

Peter Schuck, X. Viñas

A novel Thomas-Fermi (TF) approach to inhomogeneous superfluid Fermi-systems is presented and shown that it works well also in cases where the Local Density Approximation (LDA) breaks down. The novelty lies in the fact that the semiclassical approximation is applied to the pairing matrix elements not implying a local version of the chemical potential as with LDA. Applications will be given to the generic fact that if a fermionic superfluid in the BCS regime overflows from a narrow container into a much wider one, pairing is substantially reduced at the overflow point. Two examples pertinent to the physics of the outer crust of neutron stars and superfluid fermionic atoms in traps will be presented. The TF results will be compared to quantal and LDA ones.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory of dipolar Fermi gases

Cheng Zhao, Lei Jiang, Xunxu Liu +3 more

We apply the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to a system of uniform dipolar fermionic polar molecules, which recently has attracted much attention due to rapid experimental progress in achieving such systems. By calculating the anisotropic superfluid-order parameter and the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$, we show that high-${T}_{c}$ superfluid can be achieved with a quite modest value of interaction strength for polar molecules. In addition, we also show that the presence of the Fock-exchange interaction enhances superfluid pairing.

Superfluidity of fermionic pairs in a harmonic trap. Comparative studies: Local Density Approximation and Bogoliubov-de Gennes solutions

Agnieszka Cichy, Andrzej Ptok

Abstract Experiments with ultracold gases on the lattice give the opportunity to realize superfluid fermionic mixtures in a trapping potential. The external trap modifies the chemical potential locally. Moreover, this trap also introduces non-homogeneity in the superconducting order parameter. There are, among other approaches, two methods which can be used to describe the system of two-component mixtures loaded into an optical lattice: the Local Density Approximation (LDA) and the self-consistent Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations. Here, we compare results obtained within these two methods. We conclude that the results can be distinguishable only in the case of a small value of the pairing interaction.
