Tighter quantum uncertainty relations following from a general probabilistic bound

Abstract

Uncertainty relations (URs) such as the Heisenberg-Robertson or the time-energy UR are often considered to be hallmarks of quantum theory. Here, a simple derivation of these URs is presented based on a single classical inequality from estimation theory, a Cram\'er-Rao-like bound. The Heisenberg-Robertson UR is then obtained by using the Born rule and the Schr\"odinger equation. This allows a clear separation of the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics from the Hilbert space structure and the dynamical law. It also simplifies the interpretation of the bound. In addition, the Heisenberg-Robertson UR is tightened for mixed states by replacing one variance by the quantum Fisher information. Thermal states of Hamiltonians with evenly gapped energy levels are shown to saturate the tighter bound for natural choices of the operators. This example is further extended to Gaussian states of a harmonic oscillator. For many-qubit systems, we illustrate the interplay between entanglement and the structure of the operators that saturate the UR with spin-squeezed states and Dicke states.

Uncertainty relations with the variance and the quantum Fisher information based on convex decompositions of density matrices

Géza Tóth, Florian Fröwis

We present several inequalities related to the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation. In all these inequalities, we consider a decomposition of the density matrix into a mixture of states, and use the fact that the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation is valid for all these components. By considering a convex roof of the bound, we obtain an alternative derivation of the relation in Fr\"owis et al. [Phys. Rev. A 92, 012102 (2015)], and we can also list a number of conditions that are needed to saturate the relation. We present a formulation of the Cram\'er-Rao bound involving the convex roof of the variance. By considering a concave roof of the bound in the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation over decompositions to mixed states, we obtain an improvement of the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation. We consider similar techniques for uncertainty relations with three variances. Finally, we present further uncertainty relations that provide lower bounds on the metrological usefulness of bipartite quantum states based on the variances of the canonical position and momentum operators for two-mode continuous variable systems. We show that the violation of well-known entanglement conditions in these systems discussed in Duan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)] and Simon [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2726 (2000)] implies that the state is more useful metrologically than certain relevant subsets of separable states. We present similar results concerning entanglement conditions with angular momentum operators for spin systems.

Universality in uncertainty relations for a quantum particle

Spiros Kechrimparis, Stefan Weigert

Abstract A general theory of preparational uncertainty relations for a quantum particle in one spatial dimension is developed. We derive conditions which determine whether a given smooth function of the particle’s variances and its covariance is bounded from below. Whenever a global minimum exists, an uncertainty relation has been obtained. The squeezed number states of a harmonic oscillator are found to be universal : no other pure or mixed states will saturate any such relation. Geometrically, we identify a convex uncertainty region in the space of second moments which is bounded by the inequality derived by Robertson and Schrödinger. Our approach provides a unified perspective on existing uncertainty relations for a single continuous variable, and it leads to new inequalities for second moments which can be checked experimentally.

Tighter uncertainty and reverse uncertainty relations

Debasis Mondal, Shrobona Bagchi, Arun Kumar Pati

We prove a few state-dependent uncertainty relations for the product as well as the sum of variances of two incompatible observables. These uncertainty relations are shown to be tighter than the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation and other ones existing in the current literature. Also, we derive a state-dependent upper bound to the sum and the product of variances using the reverse Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and the Dunkl-Williams inequality. Our results suggest that not only can we not prepare quantum states for which two incompatible observables can have sharp values, but also we have both the lower and the upper limits on the variances of quantum mechanical observables at a fundamental level.

Uncertainty relations with variances and the quantum Fisher information based on convex decompositions of density matrices

Géza Tóth, Florian Fröwis

We discuss recent findings relating the quantum Fisher information to convex roofs of variances. We present several improvements on the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relation. In all these improvements, we consider a decomposition of the density matrix into a mixture of pure states, and use the fact that the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relation is valid for all these components. By considering a convex roof of the bound, we obtain an alternative derivation of the relation in F. Frowis, R. Schmied, and N. Gisin [Phys. Rev. A 92, 012102 (2015)], and we can also list a number of conditions that are needed to saturate the relations. We also gain new insights about the Cramer-Rao bound. By considering a concave roof of the bound in the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relation, we obtain other type of improvements. We consider similar techniques for uncertainty relations with three variances. Finally, we present further uncertainty relations that provide lower bounds on the metrological usefulness of bipartite quantum states based on the variances of canonical position and momentum operators for two-mode continuous variable systems and angular momentum operators for spin systems.

Tight Generalization of Robertson-Type Uncertainty Relations

Gen Kimura, Aina Mayumi, Yamashita, Haruki

We establish the tightest possible Robertson-type preparation uncertainty relation, which explicitly depends on the eigenvalues of the quantum state. The conventional constant $ \tfrac{1}{4} $ is replaced by the state-dependent coefficient \[ \frac{(λ_{\max} + λ_{\min})^2}{4(λ_{\max} - λ_{\min})^2}, \] where $ λ_{\max} $ and $λ_{\min}$ denote the largest and smallest eigenvalues of the density operator $ ρ$, respectively. We prove that this coefficient is optimal among all Robertson-type generalizations and does not admit further improvement. We also obtain a complete characterization of all nontrivial equality cases. Our relation becomes more pronounced as the quantum state becomes more mixed, capturing a trade-off in quantum uncertainty that the conventional Robertson's relation fails to detect. In addition, our result also provides a strict generalization of the Schrödinger's uncertainty relation, showing that the uncertainty trade-off is governed by the sum of the covariance term and a state-dependent improvement over the Robertson bound. As applications, we also refine error-disturbance trade-offs by incorporating spectral information of both the system and the measuring apparatus, thereby generalizing the Arthurs-Goodman and Ozawa inequalities.

State-independent uncertainty relations

Hubert de Guise, Lorenzo Maccone, Barry C. Sanders +1 more

The standard state-dependent Heisenberg-Robertson uncertainty-relation lower bound fails to capture the quintessential incompatibility of observables as the bound can be zero for some states. To remedy this problem, we establish a class of tight (i.e., inequalities are saturated) variance-based sum-uncertainty relations derived from the Lie algebraic properties of observables and show that our lower bounds depend only on the irreducible representation assumed carried by the Hilbert space of state of the system. We illustrate our result for the cases of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra, special unitary algebras up to rank 4, and any semisimple compact algebra. We also prove the usefulness of our results by extending a known variance-based entanglement detection criterion.
