Attenuation of excitation decay rate due to collective effect

Abstract

We study a series of N oscillators, each coupled to its nearest neighbors, and linearly to a phonon field through the oscillator's number operator. We show that the Hamiltonian of a pair of adjacent oscillators, or a dimer, within the series of oscillators can be transformed into a form in which they are collectively coupled to the phonon field as a composite unit. In the weak coupling and rotating-wave approximation, the system behaves effectively as the trilinear boson model in the one excitation subspace of the dimer subsystem. The reduced dynamics of the one excitation subspace of the dimer subsystem coupled weakly to a phonon bath is similar to that of a two-level system, with a metastable state against the vacuum. The decay constant of the subsystem is proportional to the dephasing rate of the individual oscillator in a phonon bath, attenuated by a factor that depends on site asymmetry, intersite coupling, and the resonance frequency between the transformed oscillator modes, or excitons. As a result of the collective effect, the excitation relaxation lifetime is prolonged over the dephasing lifetime of an individual oscillator coupled to the same bath.

Reduced dynamics of two oscillators collectively coupled to a thermal bath

Buang Ann Tay

We study the reduced dynamics of a pair of nondegenerate oscillators coupled collectively to a thermal bath. The model is related to the trilinear boson model where the idler mode is promoted to a field. Due to nonlinear coupling, the Markovian master equation for the pair of oscillators admits non-Gaussian equilibrium states, where the modes distribute according to the Bose-Einstein statistics. These states are metastable before the nonlinear coupling is taken over by linear coupling between the individual oscillators and the field. The Gibbs state for the individual modes lies in the subspace with infinite occupation quantum number. We present the time evolution of a few states to illustrate the behaviors of the system.

Optical Bloch Equations Modified with Phonon-Induced Intensity-Dependent Dephasing

Zhou Guang-hua, Yaoyi Li, Mu-Tian Cheng +2 more

We extend the exciton population equations of a two-level quantum dot system with weak excitation to the ones with strong excitations, in which, the phonon-induced intensity-dependent dephasing time and decay rate are involved. The straightforward calculated populations from the modified population equations demonstrate the damping behavior of Rabi oscillation as the external field increasing. The effect of the intensity-dependent dephasing time and the intensity-dependent decay rate are also discussed.

Dissipation and decoherence induced by collective dephasing in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath

Zhihai Wang, Yanjun Ji, Yong Li +1 more

The longitudinal coupling of a system to the bath usually induces the pure dephasing of the system. In this paper, we study the collective dephasing induced dissipation and decoherence in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath. It is shown that compared with the case of the same system with independent baths, the interference between the dephasing processes of different qubits induced by the common bath significantly changes the dissipation of the system. For the system of two coupled qubits, the interference leads to a slower dissipation (and decoherence) in the single-excitation subspace. As the system size increases, we find that the decay rate of the first excited state in the single-excitation subspace will tend to be a constant in the case of a common bath and will drop to zero in the case of independent baths. All of our results on collective dephasing induced dissipation can be explained based on a simple model with Fermi's golden rule.

Chain-boson model for the decoherence and relaxation of a few coupled SQUIDs in a phonon bath

A. J. Skinner, B. L. Hu

We develop a ``chain-boson model'' master equation, within the Born-Markov approximation, for a few superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) coupled into a chain and exchanging their angular momenta with a low-temperature phonon bath. Our master equation has four generators; we concentrate on the damping and diffusion and use them to study the relaxation and decoherence of a Heisenberg SQUID chain whose spectrum exhibits critical-point energy-level crossings, entangled states, and pairs of resonant transitions. We note that at an energy-level crossing, the relevant bath wavelengths are so long that even well-spaced large SQUIDs can partially exhibit collective coupling to the bath, dramatically reducing certain relaxation and decoherence rates. Also, transitions into entangled states can occur even in the case of an independent coupling of each SQUID to the bath. Finally, the pairs of resonant transitions can cause decaying oscillations to emerge in a lower-energy subspace.

Relaxation in simple quantum systems

Abraham Nitzan, R. Silbey

The decay of an oscillator and a two level system into a general heat bath is studied using a truncated cumulant expression for the time evolution operator. Expressions for the decay rate in the weak coupling and rotating wave approximations are derived, and the temperature dependence of the rate examined in all cases. We find the temperature dependence to be strongly dependent on the nature of the system and bath.

Two-vibron bound states lifetime in a one-dimensional molecular lattice coupled to acoustic phonons

Vincent Pouthier

The lifetime of two-vibron bound states in the overtone region of a one-dimensional anharmonic molecular lattice is investigated. The anharmonicity, introduced within an attractive Hubbard Hamiltonian for bosons, is responsible for the formation of bound states which belong to a finite linewidth band located below the continuum of two-vibron free states. The decay of these bound states into either bound or free states is described by considering the coupling between the vibrons and a thermal bath formed by a set of low-frequency acoustic phonons. The relaxation rate is expressed in terms of the spectral distribution of the vibron/phonon coupling and of the two-vibron Green operator which is calculated exactly by using the number states method. The behavior of the two-vibron bound states relaxation rate is analyzed with a special emphasis on the influence of the anharmonicity. It is shown that the rate exhibits two distinct regimes depending on the thermal bath dimension. When the bath dimension is equal to unity, the rate increases with the anharmonicity and the decay of the two-vibron bound states into the other bound states appears as the main contribution of the rate. By contrast, when the bath dimension is equal to 2 and 3, the rate decreases as the anharmonicity increases, indicating that the two-vibron bound states decay into the two-vibron free states continuum.
