Non-adiabatic effect in quantum pumping for a spin-boson system

Abstract

We clarify the role of non-adiabatic effects in quantum pumping for a spin-boson system. When we sinusoidally control the temperatures of two reservoirs with |$\pi /2$| phase difference, we find that the pumping current strongly depends on the initial condition, and thus, the current deviates from that predicted by the adiabatic treatment. We also analytically obtain the contribution of non-adiabatic effects in the pumping current proportional to |$\Omega ^3$|, where |$\Omega$| is the angular frequency of the temperature control. The validity of the analytic expression is verified by our numerical calculation. Moreover, we extend the steady heat fluctuation theorem to the case for slowly modulated temperatures and large transferred energies.

Quantum heat transport and effects of quantum thermal devices in noncommuting coupled spins

Yitian Chen, Junran Kong, Huan Liu +1 more

Quantum heat transport governs energy exchange processes and statistical laws in non-equilibrium quantum systems, and plays a pivotal role in quantum thermodynamics. We investigate the steady-state thermal transport of a noncommuting coupled spin system. We employ the quantum dressed master equation approach within the framework of open quantum system theory to accurately analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics, ensuring the validity of transport results in the strong coupling regime. Our results demonstrate that noncommuting spin coupling serves as a significant resource for modulating the nonlinearity of the heat current. Specifically, in the weak spin-coupling regime, the system exhibits robust negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) across various spin numbers. By deriving analytical expressions for the heat current in both the single-spin and large-spin limits, we reveal that this NDTC behavior is governed by microscopic cycle fluxes. Physically, this arises because spin excitation channels induced by the cold reservoir are suppressed under a large temperature bias, thereby blocking energy exchange cycles. Conversely, in the strong spin-coupling and large temperature bias regime, the quantum system demonstrates pronounced thermal rectification. This high rectification efficiency originates from the unidirectional saturation of the heat current, rendering the system a promising candidate for high-performance thermal diodes. Furthermore, we extend the model to a three-terminal configuration to construct a quantum thermal transistor. By manipulating the temperature of the gate reservoir, we achieve efficient modulation and amplification of heat flow between the source and drain. The heat amplification factor is shown to far exceed unity in specific operating regions, confirming significant thermal amplification.

Generation of pure spin currents via nonadiabatic quantum pumping in an antiferromagnetic chain

Leila Eslami, Fatemeh Bourbour, Somaieh Ahmadi +1 more

In this study, quantum spin pumping in an antiferromagnetic chain driven by time-dependent potential is investigated. The aim is to explore the possibility of generating and controlling spin currents in the absence of external bias and to examine the role of exchange field and periodic driving in the separation of spin-up and spin-down currents. The system is described using a tight-binding model, and spin-resolved currents are calculated employing the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. Two time-dependent potentials with a specific phase difference are applied to the two ends of the chain, while the chemical potentials of both electrodes are set equal. The results demonstrate that in the adiabatic regime (low frequencies), the response of the two spin channels is nearly identical. However, as the driving frequency increases and the system enters the nonadiabatic regime, absorption and emission processes of energy quanta become activated, leading to significant differences between spin-up and spin-down currents. The pumped current exhibits strong dependence on the chemical potential, allowing for the control of both magnitude and direction of the spin current through its adjustment. With increasing frequency, the spin current enhances, and parameters can be tuned such that the charge current nearly vanishes while a considerable spin current persists. This finding indicates the feasibility of achieving nearly pure spin pumping without net charge transfer in the antiferromagnetic chain. The results provide a promising perspective for designing spin-pumping devices based on antiferromagnetic systems.

Dynamics of a Spin-Boson System

Toshio Tsuzuki

We study the non-adiabatic effect of the bosonic bath on the spin dynamics by the light of the dynamic compensation theorem. We examine the time-evolutions of the probability of finding the up-state of spin and the thermal average of σz(t). The dynamics is formulated in competition between the tunneling coherence of spin and the non-adiabatic effect of bath in the equitable treatment. We prove the complete compensation of the infrared divergences due to the zero-point and thermodynamic fluctuations by the dynamical fluctuation of the coherent boson (the dynamic compensation). We further present the exact expressions of the above two quantities in the series form.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Thermodynamics in the Process of Adiabatic Speedup

Zhao-Ming Wang, Feng-Hua Ren, Mark Byrd

Understanding heat transfer between a quantum system and its environment is of grave importance if reliable quantum devices are to be constructed. Here, the heat transfer between the system and bath in non-Markovian open quantum systems in the process of adiabatic speedup is investigated. Using the quantum state diffusion equation method, the heat current, energy current and the power are calculated during the free evolution and under external control of the system. While the heat current increases with increasing system-bath coupling strength and bath temperature, the non-Markovian nature of the bath can restrict the heat current. Without pulse control, the heat current is nearly equal to energy current. However, with pulse control, the energy current is nearly equal to the power. We show that more non-Markovian baths can be used to better approximate an adiabatic evolution and have a smaller heat current. Our results reveal that the non-Markovian nature of the bath significantly contributes to both the heat transfer rate as well as the effective adiabatic speedup.

Adiabatic Pumping in Interacting Systems

Eran Sela, Yuval Oreg

A dc current can be pumped through an interacting system by periodically varying two independent parameters such as the magnetic field and a gate potential. We present a general expression for the adiabatic pumping current in interacting systems, written in terms of instantaneous properties of the system at equilibrium, and find the limits of its applicability. This expression generalizes the scattering approach for noninteracting particles. We apply our formula for a quantum critical system that exhibits the two-channel Kondo effect, where single particle excitations are not well defined. We find that if the quantum critical point is contained in the pumping trajectory, the pumped spin between the channels approaches h, and if it is not contained in the trajectory, the spin approaches zero when the temperature T --> 0. We discuss the non-Fermi liquid features of this system at finite T.
