Abstract

We present a rigorous framework to obtain evolution equations for the momentum distribution and higher order correlation functions in weakly interacting systems based on the Projection Operator Technique. These equations can be numerically solved in an efficient way. We compare the solution of the equations with known results for 1D models and find an excellent agreement.

Projection-Based Memory Kernel Coupling Theory for Quantum Dynamics: A Stable Framework for Non-Markovian Simulations

Wei Liu, Rui-Hao Bi, Yu Su +4 more

We present a projection-based, stability-preserving methodology for computing time correlation functions in open quantum systems governed by generalized quantum master equations with non-Markovian effects. Building upon the memory kernel coupling theory framework, our approach transforms the memory kernel hierarchy into a system of coupled linear differential equations through Mori-Zwanzig projection, followed by spectral projection onto stable eigenmodes to ensure numerical stability. By systematically eliminating unstable modes while preserving the physically relevant dynamics, our method guaranties long-time convergence without introducing artificial damping or ad hoc modifications. The theoretical framework maintains mathematical rigor through orthogonal projection operators and spectral decomposition. Benchmark calculations on the spin-boson model show excellent agreement with exact hierarchical equations of motion results while achieving significant computational efficiency. This approach provides a versatile and reliable framework for simulating non-Markovian dynamics in complex systems.

Correlated projection operator approach to non-Markovian dynamics in spin baths

Jan Fischer, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

The dynamics of an open quantum system is usually studied by performing a weak-coupling and weak-correlation expansion in the system-bath interaction. For systems exhibiting strong couplings and highly non-Markovian behavior this approach is not justified. We apply a recently proposed correlated projection superoperator technique to the model of a central spin coupled to a spin bath via full Heisenberg interaction. Analytical solutions to both the Nakajima-Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equation are determined and compared with the results of the exact solution. The correlated projection operator technique significantly improves the standard methods and can be applied to many physical problems such as the hyperfine interaction in a quantum dot.

Dynamics of quantum–classical systems in nonequilibrium environments

Jeremy Schofield, Raymond Kapral

The dynamics of a quantum system coupled to a classical environment and subject to constraints that drive it out of equilibrium are described. The evolution of the system is governed by the quantum-classical Liouville equation. Rather than evaluating the evolution of the mixed quantum-classical density operator, we derive exact equations of motion for the nonequilibrium average values of a set of operators or variables, along with correlation function expressions for the dissipative coefficients that enter these equations. These equations are obtained by requiring that the exact nonequilibrium averages are equal to local nonequilibrium averages that depend on auxiliary fields whose values satisfy evolution equations obtained using projection operator methods. The results are illustrated by deriving reaction-diffusion equations coupled to fluid hydrodynamic equations for a solution of quantum particles that can exist in two metastable states. Nonequilibrium steady states are discussed along with the reaction rate and diffusion correlation functions that characterize such states.

Projection-operator approach to master equations for coarse-grained occupation numbers in nonideal quantum gases

Christian Bartsch, Robin Steinigeweg, Jochen Gemmer B

We aim at deriving an equation of motion for specific sums of momentum mode occupation numbers from models for electrons in periodic lattices experiencing elastic scattering, electron-phonon scattering, or electron-electron scattering. These sums correspond to "grains" in momentum space. This equation of motion is supposed to involve only a moderate number of dynamical variables and/or exhibit a sufficiently simple structure such that neither its construction nor its analyzation or solution requires substantial numerical effort. To this end we compute, by means of a projection operator technique, a linear(ized) collision term which determines the dynamics of the above grain sums. This collision term results as nonsingular finite-dimensional rate matrix and may thus be inverted regardless of any symmetry of the underlying model. This facilitates calculations of, e.g., transport coefficients, as we demonstrate for a three-dimensional Anderson model featuring weak disorder.

A unitary perturbation theory approach to real-time evolution problems

Andreas Hackl, Stefan K. Kehrein

We discuss a new analytical approach to real-time evolution in quantum many-body systems. Our approach extends the framework of continuous unitary transformations such that it amounts to a novel solution method for the Heisenberg equations of motion for an operator. It is our purpose to illustrate the accuracy of this approach by studying dissipative quantum systems on all timescales. In particular, we obtain results for non-equilibrium correlation functions for general initial conditions. We illustrate our ideas for the exactly solvable dissipative oscillator and, as a non-trivial model, for the dissipative two-state system.

Non-Markovian quantum dynamics: A non-perturbative approach combining projection superoperators and Hilbert space averaging

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Jochen Gemmer B, Mathias Michel A

The time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique allows a systematic analysis of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. We introduce a class of projection superoperators which project the states of the total system onto certain correlated system-environment states. It is shown that the application of the TCL technique to this class of correlated superoperators enables the non-perturbative treatment of the dynamics of system-environment models for which the standard approach fails in any finite order of the coupling strength. We demonstrate further that the correlated superoperators correspond to the idea of a best guess of conditional quantum expectations which is determined by a suitable Hilbert space average. The general approach is illustrated by means of the model of a spin which interacts through randomly distributed couplings with a finite reservoir consisting of two energy bands. Extensive numerical simulations of the full Schroedinger equation of the model reveal the power and efficiency of the method.
