Abstract

We analyze the metric properties of conditioned quantum state spaces These spaces are the convex sets of density matrices that, when partially traced over m degrees of freedom, respectively yield the given n × n density matrix η . For the case n = 2, the volume of equipped with the Hilbert–Schmidt measure can be conjectured to be a simple polynomial of the radius of η in the Bloch-ball. Remarkably, for we find numerically that the probability to find a separable state in is independent of η (except for η pure). For , the same holds for , the probability to find a state with a positive partial transpose in . These results are proven analytically for the case of the family of 4 × 4 X -states, and thoroughly numerically investigated for the general case. The important implications of these findings for the clarification of open problems in quantum theory are pointed out and discussed.

On the comparison of volumes of quantum states

Deping Ye

This paper aims to study the α-volume of , an arbitrary subset of the set of N × N density matrices. The α-volume is a generalization of the Hilbert–Schmidt volume and the volume induced by partial trace. We obtain two-side estimates for the α-volume of in terms of its Hilbert–Schmidt volume. The analogous estimates between the Bures volume and the α-volume are also established. We employ our results to obtain bounds for the α-volume of the sets of separable quantum states and of states with positive partial transpose. Hence, our asymptotic results provide answers for questions listed in Życzkowski et al (1998 Phys. Rev. A 58 883) for large N in the sense of α-volume.

On the Bures volume of separable quantum states

Deping Ye

We obtain two sided estimates for the Bures volume of an arbitrary subset of the set of N×N density matrices, in terms of the Hilbert–Schmidt volume of that subset. For general subsets, our results are essentially optimal (for large N). As applications, we derive, in particular, nontrivial lower and upper bounds for the Bures volume of sets of separable states and for sets of states with positive partial transpose.

Moments of the Hilbert-Schmidt probability distributions over determinants of real two-qubit density matrices and of their partial transposes

Paul B. Slater

The nonnegativity of the determinant of the partial transpose of a two-qubit (4 x 4) density matrix is both a necessary and sufficient condition for its separability. While the determinant is restricted to the interval [0,1/256], the determinant of the partial transpose can range over [-1/16,1/256], with negative values corresponding to entangled states. We report here the exact values of the first nine moments of the probability distribution of the partial transpose over this interval, with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt (metric volume element) measure on the nine-dimensional convex set of real two-qubit density matrices. Rational functions C_{2 j}(m), yielding the coefficients of the 2j-th power of even polynomials occurring at intermediate steps in our derivation of the m-th moment, emerge. These functions possess poles at finite series of consecutive half-integers (m=-3/2,-1/2,...,(2j-1)/2), and certain (trivial) roots at finite series of consecutive natural numbers (m=0, 1,...). Additionally, the (nontrivial) dominant roots of C_{2 j}(m) approach the same half-integer values (m = (2 j-1)/2, (2 j-3)/2,...), as j increases. The first two moments (mean and variance) found--when employed in the one-sided Chebyshev inequality--give an upper bound of 30397/34749 = 0.874759 on the separability probability of real two-qubit density matrices. We are able to report general formulas for the m-th moment of the Hilbert-Schmidt probability distribution of the density matrix determinant over [0,1/256], in the real, complex and quaternionic two-qubit cases.

Hilbert-Schmidt Geometry of n-Level Jakobczyk-Siennicki Two-Dimensional Quantum Systems

Paul B. Slater

Jakobczyk and Siennicki studied two-dimensional sections of a set of (generalized) Bloch vectors corresponding to n x n density matrices of two-qubit systems (that is, the case n = 4). They found essentially five different types of (nontrivial) separability regimes. We compute the Euclidean/Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) separability probabilities assigned to these regimes, and conduct parallel two-dimensional sectional analyses for the higher-level cases n=6,8,9 and 10. Making use of the newly-introduced capability for integration over implicitly defined regions of version 5.1 of Mathematica -- also fruitfully used in our n=4 three-parameter entropy-maximization-based study quant-ph/0507203 -- we obtain a wide-ranging variety of exact HS-probabilities. For n>6, the probabilities are those of having a partial positive transpose (PPT). For the n=6 case, we also obtain biseparability probabilities; in the n=8,9 instances, bi-PPT probabilities; and for n=8, tri-PPT probabilities. By far, the most frequently recorded probability for n>4 is π/4 = 0.785398. We also conduct a number of related analyses, pertaining to the (one-dimensional) boundaries (both exterior and interior) of the separability and PPT domains, and attempt (with limited success) some exact calculations pertaining to the 9-dimensional (real) and 15-dimensional (complex) convex sets of two-qubit density matrices -- for which HS-separability probabilities have been conjectured, but not verified.

The geometry of absolute separability and other convex matrix properties from spectrum

Jennifer Ahiable, Naga Bhavya Teja Kothakonda, Andreas Winter

We investigate the geometric structure of the set of spectra of bipartite absolute separable states ($\mathrm{ASEP}_{m,n}$) and absolute positive partial transpose states ($\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$), \emph{i.e.}, bipartite quantum states that remain separable or PPT, respectively, under all global unitary transformations. First, we establish general geometric properties of absolute convex sets of matrices, their spectra and extreme points. Regarding absolute separability, we present a permutation-symmetric reformulation of the absolute PPT criterion and use it to demonstrate that $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ is a spectrahedron for all $m\leq n$: in particular, all its faces are exposed. While $\mathrm{ASEP}_{2,n}$ is a spectrahedron, too, for $\mathrm{ASEP}_{m,n}$ we can in general only show that it is a semialgebraic set for all $m,n\geq 3$. Furthermore, we provide a complete characterization of the faces and extreme points of $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ and demonstrate that the dimension of a face is determined by the rank of a certain matrix, with maximal proper faces having dimension $mn-m-1$. In the quantitative setting, we provide a rigorous lower bound on the maximal attainable purity of $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ via an inscribed polytope $\mathcal{P}_{m,n}$ and conjecture that the maximal purity of $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ (along with its spectra) coincides with the polytope for arbitrary dimensions except when $m=n=2$. Additionally, we also provide a rigorous upper bound on the minimal von Neumann entropy of $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ and demonstrate numerically that the minimum entropy eventually coincides with the polytope $\mathcal{P}_{m,n}$ as the local system dimension $n$ increases. Finally, we show that the relative spectral volume of $\mathrm{APPT}_{m,n}$ decays exponentially in $n$ by a constant multiplicative factor of the relative volume of the inscribed polytope $\mathcal{P}_{m,n}$.
