Abstract

Quantum information processing relies on controlling electronic and nuclear spins. Scientists experimentally demonstrate that the spins of a certain kind of optical excitation have relatively long coherence lifetimes and, furthermore, can be reliably controlled.

We experimentally demonstrate deterministic optical writing of a quantum dot-confined dark exciton, in a pure quantum state using one optical pulse. We then control the spin state of this long-lived exciton using picosecond optical pulses.

Optical coherence storage in dark exciton states using spin-dependent three-pulse photon echo

I. A. Solovev, Roman S. Nazarov, A. A. Butiugina +5 more

Extension of coherence time is a desired goal in the field of all-optical information processing implemented in both classical and quantum ways. Here we show how the decay time of a coherent signal from localized excitons can be significantly increased utilizing the spin degree of freedom. To experimentally demonstrate this effect, we studied three-pulse photon echoes from excitons in a single InGaAs/GaAs quantum well subject to a transverse magnetic field. Field-induced quantum beats lead to oscillation of the exciton population between short-lived bright and long-lived dark states during the coherence storage period between the second and third excitation pulses. In the aperiodic regime, the echo signal decay time tends to the dark exciton lifetime, which leads to an increase in the photon echo decay time by an order of magnitude.

Deterministic coherent writing of a long-lived semiconductor spin qubit using one ultrafast optical pulse

Ido Schwartz, Dan Cogan, Emma Schmidgall +4 more

We use one single, few-picosecond-long, variably polarized laser pulse to deterministically write any selected spin state of a quantum dot confined dark exciton whose life and coherence time are six and five orders of magnitude longer than the laser pulse duration, respectively. The pulse is tuned to an absorption resonance of an excited dark exciton state, which acquires nonnegligible oscillator strength due to residual mixing with bright exciton states. We obtain a high-fidelity one-to-one mapping from any point on the Poincar\'e sphere of the pulse polarization to a corresponding point on the Bloch sphere of the spin of the deterministically photogenerated dark exciton.
