Short-cycle pulse sequence for dynamical decoupling of local fields and dipole-dipole interactions

Abstract

We propose an alternate pulse sequence for dynamical averaging of the dipole-dipole interactions and inhomogeneity of the magnetic fields in the nuclear-spin system. The sequence contains a short cycle of the periodic resonant pulse excitation that offers new possibilities for implementing the long-lived multiqubit quantum memory on the condensed spin ensembles that are so important for the construction of a universal quantum computer and long-distance quantum communications.

Symmetric-cycle pulse sequence for dynamical decoupling of local fields and dipole–dipole interactions

Sergey A. Moiseev, Vladimir A. Skrebnev

Abstract We have proposed a new pulse sequence for the dynamical decoupling of decoherence effects in the ensemble of nuclear spins. The sequence provides a symmetric cycle that offers a strong suppression of the decoherence effects caused by the dipole–dipole interactions and the inhomogeneous local magnetic fields in nuclear spin ensemble dynamics. We have discussed a potential of the proposed pulse sequence for the long-lived storage of the multi-qubit quantum states.

Abstract The protocol of dynamic decoupling using a sequence of resonance RF pulses with different shapes in a system of dipole-coupled electron/nuclear spins with inhomogeneous broadening of the resonance line has been theoretically studied. The choice of optimal RF pulse parameters for implementation of long-lived broadband quantum memory based on these spin systems is discussed.

Performance comparison of dynamical decoupling sequences for a qubit in a rapidly fluctuating spin bath

Gonzalo A. Álvarez, Ashok Ajoy, Xinhua Peng +1 more

Avoiding the loss of coherence of quantum mechanical states is an important prerequisite for quantum information processing. Dynamical decoupling (DD) is one of the most effective experimental methods for maintaining coherence, especially when one can access only the qubit system and not its environment (bath). It involves the application of pulses to the system whose net effect is a reversal of the system-environment interaction. In any real system, however, the environment is not static, and therefore the reversal of the system-environment interaction becomes imperfect if the spacing between refocusing pulses becomes comparable to or longer than the correlation time of the environment. The efficiency of the refocusing improves therefore if the spacing between the pulses is reduced. Here, we quantify the efficiency of different DD sequences in preserving different quantum states. We use $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ nuclear spins as qubits and an environment of $^{1}\mathrm{H}$ nuclear spins as the environment, which couples to the qubit via magnetic dipole-dipole couplings. Strong dipole-dipole couplings between the proton spins result in a rapidly fluctuating environment with a correlation time of the order of 100 $\ensuremath{\mu}$s. Our experimental results show that short delays between the pulses yield better performance if they are compared with the bath correlation time. However, as the pulse spacing becomes shorter than the bath correlation time, an optimum is reached. For even shorter delays, the pulse imperfections dominate over the decoherence losses and cause the quantum state to decay.

Dynamical Decoupling of Spin-Clusters using Solid State NMR

Abhishek Shukla, T. S. Mahesh

In this work we experimentally study the efficiency of various dynamical decoupling sequences for suppressing decoherence of single as well as multiple quantum coherences on large spin-clusters. The system involves crystallites of a powdered sample containing a large number of molecular protons interacting via long-range dipole-dipole interaction. The multiple quantum coherences are prepared by progressively creating correlations in the spin lattice using standard pulse sequences implementing two-quantum average Hamiltonian. The spin system is then subjected to various dynamical decoupling sequences, followed by conversion into observable single quantum coherence by using time-reversal sequence. The experiments reveal superior performance of the recently introduced RUDD sequences in suppressing the decoherence.

Optimized Dynamical Decoupling for Spin Ensembles with Large Inhomogeneities

Rajan Paul, Genko Genov, Oliver Schmid +4 more

Spin ensembles show increasing promise for highly efficient quantum sensing and quantum technologies. However, protecting their coherent properties remains a significant challenge. Dynamical decoupling (DD) typically employs a sequence of fast pulses that aim to reduce the effect of unwanted system-environment interactions. However, the performance of the DD sequences typically suffers in spin ensembles, e.g., due to amplitude and frequency inhomogeneities and control errors. In this work, we compare the performance of an extensive number of DD protocols for coherence protection and quantum sensing in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers under ambient conditions. We identify the optimal approach that uses rapid adiabatic passage pulses, which are robust to amplitude and frequency inhomogeneity, in combination with the variation of their phases. We experimentally demonstrate an improved signal contrast and an order-of-magnitude increase in memory time with the optimal sequence compared to the widely used XY8 with standard rectangular pulses. We also apply our approach for improved sensing of a weak oscillating field. While our particular demonstration is with NV centers in diamond, the optimized protocol is generally applicable to other spin ensembles and to systems with high amplitude and/or frequency inhomogeneities.
