The choice of a V-type system with the probe field in the subluminal or superluminal regimen

Abstract

We study the influence of the angle between the two dipole transition moments on the group velocity for two kinds of three-level V-type systems with spontaneously generated coherence and incoherent pumping. The group velocity of the probe field for both kinds of the V-type systems alternates between the subluminal or superluminal regimen. We can choose a real three-level V-type system from atoms or molecules to exhibit subluminal or superluminal light propagation by a proper geometry of the probe, coupling and incoherent pumping fields, which depends on the angle between the two dipole transition moments.

Subluminal and superluminal light propagation in two kinds of V-type system

Olimpia Budrigă

We study the change of the probe field group velocity from subluminal to superluminal range for two kinds of closed three-level V-type system with spontaneously generated coherence and incoherent pumping field. For the first kind of the V-type system we deduce the analytical formula of the group velocity, while for the second kind of the V-type system we solve numerically the density matrix equations system and apply it to a real system from the LiH molecule. We find that the group index of the probe field can be changed from positive to negative within the appropriate choice of the relative phase between the probe and coupling field phases, the incoherent pumping rate and probe detuning.

Manipulation role of the relative phase and incoherent pumping on a light pulse propagation

Cui Ni, Aiyun Li, Hui Ma +2 more

In an open / type system with the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), when the probe and driving fields have different frequencies, the switching of the group velocity of the probe pulse from subluminal to superluminal is realized not only by adjusting values of the relative phase between the probe and driving fields but also by varying values of the incoherent pumping rate. For the subluminal propagation, the system always exhibits the probe absorption, however, the superluminal propagation is always companied with gain of the probe field.

Control over group velocity in a three-level closed Λ system via spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence

Sulagna Dutta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

The light propagation of a probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping has been studied when both dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) play a significant role. We have investigated the group velocity of probe field and hence the group index of a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping when both DIC and SGC play a significant role. We have shown that by varying the probe field Rabi frequency one can control the interference between these two coherences which leads to different nonlinear response (amplification without inversion, electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption) leading to different (positive and negative) dispersion. Hence control over switching of group velocity from subluminal to superluminal and vice versa can be achieved. We have also shown that when the contributions from both the coherences are comparable, the dependence of group velocity of probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping on phase difference between probe and coherent fields is different from that obtained under the weak probe field condition. Going beyond the weak probe field approximation we have derived analytical expressions for group velocity and hence the group index in the steady state limit (keeping all orders of system parameters) to generalize the analysis, and these expressions can be used for any set of system parameters without any restriction. The numerical values obtained by solving the density matrix equations agree well with these exact analytical values at a large time limit. We have proposed a scheme for experimental realization of EIT and hence subluminal light propagation in molecules by invoking spontaneously generated coherence.

SGC Switching Between Subluminal to Superluminal Propagation in V-Type Atom

Han Ding-An, Hong Wei Guo, Bai Yanfeng +2 more

For a V-type three-level atomic system with two closely spaced upper levels, we investigate the light pulse propagation properties with only one laser field. Due to spontaneously generated coherence, the group velocity of the light pulse can be changed from subluminal to superluminal. The effects of the field intensity and the two-upper level splitting on the group velocity are also shown. At last, an analytical expression for the group velocity is given in the case of a weak field.

Absorption-free superluminal light propagation in a V-type system

Kh. Saaidi, Bahareh Ruzbahani, S. W. Rabiei +1 more

Dispersion and absorption properties of a weak probe field in a three-level V-type atomic system is studied. By application of indirect incoherent pump fields the effect of populating upper levels on optical properties of the atomic medium in presence of a strong coherent pump field is investigated. It is shown that the slope of dispersion changes from positive to negative just by changing the intensity of the coherent or indirect incoherent pump fields. It is demonstrated that the absorption-free subluminal and superluminal light propagation appears in this system.

Subluminal to superluminal light propagation in a V-type three-level atomic system interacting with squeezed vacuum

Qin Zhang, Guanghui Qu, Yuan-He Tang +2 more

We study the light propagation properties in a V-type three-level atomic system interacting with two independent broadband squeezed baths. Using the graphic method, the dependences of the absorption and the dispersion of the system on the coupling field strength, the incoherent pumping field strength and the intensity of the squeezed vacuum are analysed. The result shows that the probe pulse propagation can be changed from subluminal to superluminal speed.
