We investigate two kinds of quantum phase transitions observed in the one-dimensional half-filled Peierls-Hubbard model with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral in the strong-coupling region $U\ensuremath{\gg}t$, ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ [
t ${(t}^{\ensuremath{'}})$, nearest- (next-nearest-) neighbor hopping;
U, on-site Coulomb repulsion]. In the uniform case, with the help of the conformal field theory prediction, we numerically determine a phase boundary ${t}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(U/t)$ between the spin-fluid and the dimer states, where a bare coupling of the marginal operator vanishes and the low-energy and long-distance behaviors of the spin part are described by a free-boson model. To exhibit the conformal invariance of the systems on the phase boundary, a multiplet structure of the excitation spectrum of finite-size systems and a value of the central charge are also examined. The critical phenomenological aspect of the spin-Peierls transitions accompanied by the lattice dimerization is then argued for the systems on the phase boundary; the existence of logarithmic corrections to the power-law behaviors of the energy gain and the spin gap (i.e., the Cross-Fisher scaling law) are discussed.
We investigate the self-dual three-state quantum chain with nearest-neighbor interactions and S_3 S 3 , time-reversal, and parity symmetries. We find a rich phase diagram including gapped phases with order-disorder coexistence, integrable critical points with U(1) U ( 1 ) symmetry, and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic critical regions described by three-state Potts and free-boson conformal field theories respectively. We also find an unusual critical phase which appears to be described by combining two conformal field theories with distinct “Fermi velocities”. The order-disorder coexistence phase has an emergent fractional supersymmetry, and we find lattice analogs of its generators.
We revisit the phase diagram of the dimerized XXZ spin-
21 chain with nearest-neighbor couplings which was studied numerically by Mondal et al. [Phys. Rev. B 106, L201106 (2022)]. The model has isotropic
XY couplings which have a uniform value and
ZZ couplings which have a dimerized form, with strengths
Ja and
Jb on alternate bonds. We find a rich phase diagram in the region of positive
Ja,Jb. We provide a detailed understanding of the different phases and associated quantum phase transitions using a combination of mean-field theory, low-energy effective Hamiltonians, renormalization group calculations employing the technique of bosonization, and numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The phase diagram consists of two Ising paramagnetic phases called
IPM0 and ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$, and a phase with Ising Neel (IN) order; all these phases are gapped. The phases
IPM0 and ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ are separated by a gapless phase transition line $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{a}={J}_{b}\ensuremath{\le}1$---the well-known Tomonaga Luttinger liquid captured by a conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge
c=1. In contrast, there are two phase transition lines separating
IPM0 or the ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ from IN that are described by
c=21 CFTs and correspond to quantum Ising transitions. In fact, the
c=1 line bifurcates into the two
c=21 lines at the point
Ja=Jb=1; the shape of the bifurcation is found analytically using RG calculations. A symmetry analysis shows that
IPM0 is a topologically trivial phase while ${\mathrm{IPM}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ is a time-reversal symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) with spin-
21 states at the two ends of an open system. A gap opens in the low-energy spectrum whenever one moves away from one of the phase transition lines; the scaling of the gap with the distance from a transition line is found analytically using the RG method. The numerical results obtained by the DMRG method are in good agreement with the analytical results. Further, we show that useful insights into the nature of the phase diagram of the above Hamiltonian, particularly the SPT as well as the phase transitions, is obtained via Kramers-Wannier duality to a deformed quantum Ashkin-Teller model. Finally, we propose experimental platforms for testing our results.
We construct local generalizations of 3-state Potts models with exotic critical points. We analytically show that these are described by non-diagonal modular invariant partition functions of products of Z_3 Z 3 parafermion or u(1)_6 u ( 1 ) 6 conformal field theories (CFTs). These correspond either to non-trivial permutation invariants or block diagonal invariants, that one can understand in terms of anyon condensation. In terms of lattice parafermion operators, the constructed models correspond to parafermion chains with many-body terms. Our construction is based on how the partition function of a CFT depends on symmetry sectors and boundary conditions. This enables to write the partition function corresponding to one modular invariant as a linear combination of another over different sectors and boundary conditions, which translates to a general recipe how to write down a microscopic model, tuned to criticality. We show that the scheme can also be extended to construct critical generalizations of k k -state clock type models.
Abstract We formulate a ℤk-parafermionization/bosonization scheme for one-dimensional lattice models and field theories on a torus, starting from a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation on a lattice, which extends the Majorana-Ising duality atk= 2. The ℤk-parafermionization enables us to investigate the critical theories of parafermionic chains whose fundamental degrees of freedom are parafermionic, and we find that their criticality cannot be described by any existing conformal field theory. The modular transformations of these parafermionic low-energy critical theories as general consistency conditions are found to be unconventional in that their partition functions on a torus transform differently from any conformal field theory whenk >2. Explicit forms of partition functions are obtained by the developed parafermionization for a large class of critical ℤk-parafermionic chains, whose operator contents are intrinsically distinct from any bosonic or fermionic model in terms of conformal spins and statistics. We also use the parafermionization to exhaust all the ℤk-parafermionic minimal models, complementing earlier works on fermionic cases.
