Abstract

We introduce a microscopic computation which shows that the Hamiltonian of a Bose-Einstein Condensate can be analytically solved in the two-mode approximation, in particular, in the case of an asymmetric double-well condensate in the dilute regime. Our model is exactly diagonalisable when the overlap of the quasilocalized modes in each well is small enough with respect to the trap asymmetry. For larger overlaps or highly symmetric traps, our diagonalisable Hamiltonian acquires extra terms that we treat within perturbation theory.

Dynamics in asymmetric double-well condensates

Horacio M. Cataldo, Dora M. Jezek

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in asymmetric double wells is studied. We construct a two-mode model and analyze the properties of the corresponding phase-space diagram, showing in particular that the minimum of the phase-space portrait becomes shifted from the origin as a consequence of the nonvanishing overlap between the ground and excited states from which the localized states are derived. We further incorporate effective interaction corrections in the set of two-mode model parameters. Such a formalism is applied to a recent experimentally explored system, which is confined by a toroidal trap with radial barriers forming an arbitrary angle between them. We confront the model results with Gross-Pitaevskii simulations for various angle values finding a very good agreement. We also analyze the accuracy of a previously employed simple model for moving barriers, exploring a possible improvement that could cover a wider range of trap asymmetries.

Ground state and excitations of a Bose gas: From a harmonic trap to a double well

Yonathan Japha, Y. B. Band

We determine the low-energy properties of a trapped Bose gas split in two by a potential barrier over the whole range of barrier heights and asymmetry between the wells. For either weak or strong coupling between the wells, our two-mode theory yields a two-site Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with the tunneling, interaction, and bias parameters calculated simply using an explicit form of two mode functions. When the potential barrier is relatively low, most of the particles occupy the condensate mode and our theory reduces to a two-mode version of the Bogoliubov theory, which gives a satisfactory estimate of the spatial shape and energy of the lowest collective excitation. When the barrier is high, our theory generalizes the standard two-site Bose-Hubbard model into the case of asymmetric modes, and correctly predicts a full separation of the modes in the limit of strong separation of the wells. We provide explicit analytic forms for the number squeezing and coherence as a function of particle number and temperature. We compare our theory to other two-mode theories for bosons in a double well and discuss their validity in different parameter regimes.

Bose-Einstein condensates on slightly asymmetric double-well potentials

Bruno Juliá-Díaz, Joan Martorell, A. Polls

An analytical insight into the symmetry-breaking mechanisms underlying the transition from Josephson to self-trapping regimes in Bose-Einstein condensates is presented. We obtain expressions for the ground-state properties of the system of a gas of attractive bosons modeled by a two-site Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with an external bias. Simple formulas are found relating the appearance of fragmentation in the condensate with the large quantum fluctuations of the population imbalance occurring in the transition from the Josephson to the self-trapped regime.

A perturbative approach to inelastic collisions in a Bose–Einstein condensate

Robert B. Mann, Matthew B. Young, Ivette Fuentes

It has recently been discovered that for certain rates of mode-exchange collisions analytic solutions can be found for a Hamiltonian describing the two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate. We proceed to study the behavior of the system using perturbation theory if the coupling constants only approximately match these parameter constraints. We find that the model is robust to such perturbations. We study the effects of degeneracy on the perturbations and find that the induced changes differ greatly from the non-degenerate case. We also model inelastic collisions that result in particle loss or condensate decay as external perturbations and use this formalism to examine the effects of three-body recombination and background collisions.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential in the vicinity of a critical point

Barbara Oleś, Paweł Zin, Jan Chwedeńczuk +2 more

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive particle interaction in a symmetric double well potential. It is known that in the mean field description a symmetric solution for the condensate wavefunction becomes unstable when the interactions are stronger than some critical value. We analyze the system around the critical point applying the number conserving Bogoliubov theory and exact diagonalization of the two mode hamiltonian. It allows for estimation of the density fluctuations in the system. Fluctuations of the order parameter, which is defined in the mean field description, turn out to be maximal at the critical point.

We derive an approximate analytical expression for the ground state of double-well BEC's, which reproduces highly accurately the numerical solution for the whole parameter regimes of the two-body repulsive interaction strength, the total number of atoms, and the hopping parameter.
