Abstract

We investigate the finite-size corrections of the entanglement entropy of critical ladders and propose a conjecture for its scaling behaviour. The conjecture is verified for free fermions, for Heisenberg ladders, and for quantum Ising ladders. Our results support that the prefactor of the logarithmic correction of the entanglement entropy of critical ladder models is universal and is associated with the central charge of the one-dimensional version of the models and with the number of branches associated with gapless excitations. Our results suggest that it is possible to infer whether there is a violation of the entropic area law in two-dimensional critical systems by analyzing the scaling behaviour of the entanglement entropy of ladder systems, which are easier to deal with.

Entanglement scaling in critical two-dimensional fermionic and bosonic systems

Thomas Barthel, Ming-Chiang Chung, Ulrich Schollwöck

We relate the reduced density matrices of quadratic fermionic and bosonic models to their Green's function matrices in a unified way and calculate the scaling of the entanglement entropy of finite systems in an infinite universe exactly. For critical fermionic two-dimensional (2D) systems at $T=0$, two regimes of scaling are identified: generically, we find a logarithmic correction to the area law with a prefactor dependence on the chemical potential that confirms earlier predictions based on the Widom conjecture. If, however, the Fermi surface of the critical system is zero-dimensional, then we find an area law with a sublogarithmic correction. For a critical bosonic 2D array of coupled oscillators at $T=0$, our results show that the entanglement entropy follows the area law without corrections.

Scaling behavior of entanglement in two- and three-dimensional free-fermion systems

Weifei Li, Letian Ding, Rong Yu +2 more

Exactly solving a spinless fermionic system in two and three dimensions, we investigate the scaling behavior of the block entropy in critical and noncritical phases. The scaling of the block entropy crucially depends on the nature of the excitation spectrum of the system and on the topology of the Fermi surface. Noticeably, in the critical phases the scaling violates the area law and acquires a logarithmic correction only when a well-defined Fermi surface exists in the system. When the area law is violated, we accurately verify a conjecture for the prefactor of the logarithmic correction, proposed by D. Gioev and I. Klich [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 100503 (2006)].

Entanglement entropy of non-Hermitian free fermions

Yibin Guo, Yi-Cong Yu, Rui-Zhen Huang +4 more

Abstract We study the entanglement properties of non-Hermitian free fermionic models with translation symmetry using the correlation matrix technique. Our results show that the entanglement entropy has a logarithmic correction to the area law in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. For any one-dimensional one-band system, we prove that each Fermi point of the system contributes exactly 1/2 to the coefficient c of the logarithmic correction. Moreover, this relation between c and Fermi point is verified for more general one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases by numerical calculations and finite-size scaling analysis. In addition, we also study the single-particle and density–density correlation functions.

Entropic area law for Fermions

Wolf, M M

We investigate the scaling of the entanglement entropy in an infinite translational invariant Fermionic system of any spatial dimension. The states under consideration are ground states and excitations of tight-binding Hamiltonians with arbitrary interactions. We show that the entropy of a finite region typically scales with the area of the surface times a logarithmic correction. The latter can be traced back to the criticality of the models. The relation between the entanglement entropy and the structure of the Fermi surface is discussed, and it is proven, that the presented scaling law holds whenever the Fermi surface is finite. This is in particular true for all ground states of Hamiltonians with finite range interactions.

Violation of the Entropic Area Law for Fermions

Universality of finite-size corrections to geometrical entanglement in one-dimensional quantum critical systems

Xijing Liu, Bing-Quan Hu, Sam Young Cho +2 more

Recently, the finite-size corrections to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site in the spin-1/2 chain have been numerically shown to scale inversely with system size, and its prefactor b has been suggested to be possibly universal [Q-Q. Shi et al., New J. Phys. 12, 025008 (2010)]. As possible evidence of its universality, the numerical values of the prefactors have been confirmed analytically by using the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy with a Neumann boundary condition for a free compactified field [J-M. Stephan et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 180406(R) (2010)]. However, the Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy is not unique and does depend on conformally invariant boundary conditions. Here, we show that a unique Affleck-Ludwig boundary entropy corresponding to a finitesize correction to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site exists and show that the ratio of the prefactor b to the corresponding minimum groundstate degeneracy gmin for the Affleck- Ludwig boundary entropy is a constant for any critical region of the spin-1 XXZ system with the single-ion anisotropy, i.e., b/(2 log2 g min ) = −1. Previously studied spin-1/2 systems, including the quantum three-state Potts model, have verified the universal ratio. Hence, the inverse finite-size correction to the geometrical entanglement per lattice site and its prefactor b are universal for one-dimensional critical systems.
