Note On The Dilaton Effective Action And Entanglement Entropy

Abstract

In this note we do the analysis of entanglement entropy more carefully when the non-conformal theory flows to a non-trivial IR fixed point. In particular we emphasize the role of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in these calculations. We also compare the current technique for evaluating the entanglement entropy, particularly the Green's function method for gaussian theories, with the dilaton effective action approach and show that they compute identical quantities. As a result of this, the dilaton effective action approach can be thought of as an extension of Green's function technique to interacting theories.

Trace Anomaly Matching and Exact Results For Entanglement Entropy

Shamik Banerjee

Following the ideas developed by Komargodski and Schwimmer in arXiv:1107.3987 and arXiv:1112.4538, we argue that the IR dilaton effective action on the cone computes the entanglement entropy of an even dimensional non-conformal field theory interpolating between a UV and an IR fixed point. We restrict our attention to theories which flow to trivial IR fixed point. We get exact non-perturbative results for the coefficients of the logarithmically divergent term of the entanglement entropy in these field theories in arbitrary even dimensions. The results match precisely with the weak coupling results available in the literature and also with the strong coupling results obtained via holography. We also write the universal terms for field theories which interpolate between a scale invariant but not conformally invariant UV fixed point and a trivial IR fixed point.

Renormalized entanglement entropy on cylinder

Shamik Banerjee, Yūki Nakaguchi, Tatsuma Nishioka

We develop a framework of calculating entanglement entropy for non-conformal field theories with the use of the dilaton effective action. To illustrate it, we locate a theory on a cylinder $$ \mathbb{R}\times {\mathbb{S}}^2 $$ and compute entanglement entropy of a cap-like region perturbatively with respect to the mass for a free massive scalar field. A renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) is proposed to regularize the ultraviolet divergence on the cylinder. We find that the REE decreases monotonically both in the small and large mass regions as the mass increases. We confirm all of these behaviors by the numerical calculations, which further shows the monotonic decrease of the REE in the entire renormalization group flow.

The a-theorem and entanglement entropy

Sergey N. Solodukhin

The a-theorem is demonstrated for the RG flows of entanglement entropy in two and four dimensions. In four dimensions we relate it to the term quadratic in intrinsic derivative of the dilaton along the entangling surface in the dilaton entropy. The a-theorem, similarly to the c-theorem in two dimensions, then follows from the positivity of the 2-point function of stress-energy tensor. We suggest that the a-theorem, provided it is properly reformulated in terms of the entanglement entropy, may follow from the c-theorem.

Renormalization group flow of entanglement entropy on spheres

Omer Ben-Ami, Dean Carmi, Michael Smolkin

We explore entanglement entropy of a cap-like region for a generic quantum field theory residing in the Bunch-Davies vacuum on de Sitter space. Entanglement entropy in our setup is identical with the thermal entropy in the static patch of de Sitter, and we derive a simple relation between the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor trace and the RG flow of entanglement entropy. In particular, renormalization of the bare couplings and logarithmic divergence of the entanglement entropy are interrelated in our setup. We confirm our findings by recovering known universal contributions for a free field theory deformed by a mass operator as well as obtain correct universal behaviour at the fixed points. Simple examples of entanglement entropy flows are elaborated in d=2,3,4. Inthreedimensionswefindthatwhiletherenormalizedentanglemententropy is stationary at the fixed points, it is not monotonic. We provide a computational evidence that the universal ‘area law’ for a conformally coupled scalar is different from the known result in the literature, and argue that this difference survives in the limit of flat space. Finally, we carry out the spectral decomposition of entanglement entropy flow and discuss its application to the F-theorem.

Wilsonian Effective Action and Entanglement Entropy

Satoshi Iso, Takato Mori, K. Sakai

This is a continuation of our previous works on entanglement entropy (EE) in interacting field theories. In previous papers, we have proposed the notion of ZM gauge theory on Feynman diagrams to calculate EE in quantum field theories and shown that EE consists of two particular contributions from propagators and vertices. We have also shown that the purely non-Gaussian contributions from interaction vertices can be interpreted as renormalized correlation functions of composite operators. In this paper, we will first provide a unified matrix form of EE containing both contributions from propagators and (classical) vertices, and then extract further non-Gaussian contributions based on the framework of the Wilsonian renormalization group. It is conjectured that the EE in the infrared is given by a sum of all the vertex contributions in the Wilsonian effective action.

Entanglement Entropy Flow and the Ward Identity

Vladimir Rosenhaus, Michael Smolkin

We derive differential equations for the flow of entanglement entropy as a function of the metric and the couplings of the theory. The variation of the universal part of entanglement entropy under a local Weyl transformation is related to the variation under a local change in the couplings. We show that this relation is, in fact, equivalent to the trace Ward identity. As a concrete application of our formalism, we express the entanglement entropy for massive free fields as a two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor.
