Abstract

We present the complete phase diagram for one-dimensional binary mixtures of bosonic ultracold atomic gases in a harmonic trap. We obtain exact results with direct numerical diagonalization for a small number of atoms, which permits us to quantify quantum many-body correlations. The quantum Monte Carlo method is used to calculate energies and density profiles for larger system sizes. We study the system properties for a wide range of interaction parameters. For the extreme values of these parameters, different correlation limits can be identified, where the correlations are either weak or strong. We investigate in detail how the correlations evolve between the limits. For balanced mixtures in the number of atoms in each species, the transition between the different limits involves sophisticated changes in the one- and two-body correlations. Particularly, we quantify the entanglement between the two components by means of the von Neumann entropy. We show that the limits equally exist when the number of atoms is increased for balanced mixtures. Also, the changes in the correlations along the transitions among these limits are qualitatively similar. We also show that, for imbalanced mixtures, the same limits with similar transitions exist. Finally, for strongly imbalanced systems, only two limits survive, i.e., a miscible limit and a phase-separated one, resembling those expected with a mean-field approach.

Mixtures of ultracold Bose gases in one dimension: A Quantum Monte Carlo study

Parisi, Luca

In this thesis we investigate the properties of mixtures of Bose gases in one dimensions at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. First we investigate the limiting case of an impurity interacting with an atomic bath. We characterize the impurity, by calculating its effective mass, binding energy as well as the contact parameter between the impurity and the bath. In particular, we find that the effective mass rapidly increases to very large values when the impurity gets strongly coupled to an otherwise weakly repulsive bath. Then we describe uniform balanced mixtures with repulsive interactions. We investigate the miscibility phase diagram of the two components and find that correlations do not alter the phase diagram predicted by mean-field theories. We investigate the Andreev-Bashkin effect , a non-dissipative drag between the the two components of the gas and find that the drag becomes very large in the strongly interacting regime. In non-homogeneous systems we also investigate the frequency of the spin-dipole mode. Finally we describe mixtures with attractive inter-species interactions, where one can obtain a liquid ground state because of the competition between the inter-species attraction and intra-species repulsion. We characterize the the liquid and we find that the liquid state can be formed if the ratio of coupling strengths between inter-species attractive and intra-species repulsive interactions exceeds a critical value.

Quantum correlations and spatial localization in trapped one-dimensional ultra-cold Bose–Bose–Bose mixtures

Tran Duong Anh-Tai, Miguel Ángel García-March, Thomas Busch +1 more

Abstract We systematically investigate and illustrate the complete ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional, three-species mixture of a few repulsively interacting bosons trapped harmonically. To numerically obtain the solutions to the many-body Schrödinger equation, we employ the improved Exact Diagonalization method (Anh-Tai et al 2023 SciPost Phys. 15 048), which is capable of treating strongly-correlated few-body systems from first principles in an efficiently truncated Hilbert space. We present our comprehensive results for all possible combinations of intra- and interspecies interactions in the extreme limits that are either the ideal limit (g = 0) or close to the hard-core limit ( g → ∞ ). These results show the emergence of unique ground-state properties related to correlations, coherence and spatial localization stemming from strongly repulsive interactions.

Atomic boson-fermion mixtures in one-dimensional box potentials: Few-body and mean-field many-body analyses

Bishal Parajuli, Daniel Pęcak, Chih-Chun Chien

We study binary atomic boson-fermion mixtures confined in one dimensional box potentials by few-body theory with contact interactions and mean-field many-body theory with density-density interactions. A variety of correlations and structures arise as the inter- and intraspecies interactions are tuned. Both few-body and many-body results show that miscible phase and three-chunk phase separation are directly observable in the density profiles. Meanwhile, two-chunk phase separation can be inferred from the few-body correlations and many-body density profiles. We present phase diagrams of selected types of atomic mixtures to show where different structures survive. The few-body analysis demonstrates that two-body correlation functions can reveal information relevant to the results from many-body calculations or experiments. From the many-body density profiles in the phase-separation regime, we extract the healing lengths of both species and explain the scaling behavior by an energy-competition argument.

Phase separation of a Bose-Bose mixture: Impact of the trap and particle-number imbalance

Maxim Pyzh, Peter Schmelcher

We explore a few-body mixture of two bosonic species confined in quasi-one-dimensional parabolic traps of different length scales. The ground-state phase diagrams in the three-dimensional parameter space spanned by the harmonic length scale ratio, interspecies coupling strength, and particle-number ratio are investigated. As a first case study we use the mean-field ansatz (MF) to perform a detailed analysis of the separation mechanism. It allows us to derive a simple and intuitive rule predicting which of the immiscible phases is energetically more favorable at the miscible-immiscible phase boundary. We estimate the critical coupling strength for the miscible-immiscible transition and perform a comparison to correlated many-body results obtained by means of the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method for bosonic mixtures (ML-X). At a critical ratio of the trap frequencies, determined solely by the particle-number ratio, the deviations between MF and ML-X are very pronounced and can be attributed to a high degree of entanglement between the components. As a result, we evidence the breakdown of the effective one-body picture. Additionally, when many-body correlations play a substantial role, the one-body density is in general not sufficient for deciding upon the phase at hand which we demonstrate exemplarily.

Quantum gas mixtures in different correlation regimes

Miguel Ángel García-March, Thomas Busch

We present a many-body description for two-component ultracold bosonic gases when one of the species is in the weakly interacting regime and the other is either weakly or strongly interacting. In the one-dimensional limit the latter is a hybrid in which a Tonks-Girardeau gas is immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is an example of a class of quantum system involving a tunable, superfluid environment. We describe the process of phase separation microscopically as well as semiclassically in both situations and show that quantum correlations are maintained even in the separated phase.
