Abstract

We produce ultracold dense trapped samples of ^{87}Rb^{133}Cs molecules in their rovibrational ground state, with full nuclear hyperfine state control, by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) with efficiencies of 90%. We observe the onset of hyperfine-changing collisions when the magnetic field is ramped so that the molecules are no longer in the hyperfine ground state. A strong quadratic shift of the transition frequencies as a function of applied electric field shows the strongly dipolar character of the RbCs ground-state molecule. Our results open up the prospect of realizing stable bosonic dipolar quantum gases with ultracold molecules.

Ultracold Gas of Dipolar NaCs Ground State Molecules

Ian Stevenson, Aden Z. Lam, Niccolò Bigagli +4 more

We report on the creation of bosonic NaCs molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground state via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. We create ultracold gases with up to 22 000 dipolar NaCs molecules at a temperature of 300(50) nK and a peak density of 1.0(4)×10^{12} cm^{-3}. We demonstrate comprehensive quantum state control by preparing the molecules in a specific electronic, vibrational, rotational, and hyperfine state. We measure the ground state ac polarizability at 1064 nm along with the two-body loss rate, which we find to be universal. Employing the tunability and strength of the permanent electric dipole moment of NaCs, we induce dipole moments of up to 2.6 D at a dc electric field of 2.1(2) kV/cm and demonstrate strong microwave coupling between the two lowest rotational states with a Rabi frequency of 2π×45 MHz. A large electric dipole moment, accessible at relatively small electric fields, makes ultracold gases of NaCs molecules well suited for the exploration of strongly interacting phases of dipolar quantum matter.

Creation of an Ultracold Gas of Ground-State Dipolar Na 23 Rb 87 Molecules

Mingyang Guo, Bing Zhu, Bo Lü +7 more

We report the successful production of an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state ^{23}Na^{87}Rb molecules. Starting from weakly bound Feshbach molecules formed via magnetoassociation, the lowest rovibrational and hyperfine level of the electronic ground state is populated following a high-efficiency and high-resolution two-photon Raman process. The high-purity absolute ground-state samples have up to 8000 molecules and densities of over 10^{11} cm^{-3}. By measuring the Stark shifts induced by external electric fields, we determined the permanent electric dipole moment of the absolute ground-state ^{23}Na^{87}Rb and demonstrated the capability of inducing an effective dipole moment over 1 D. Bimolecular reaction between ground-state ^{23}Na^{87}Rb molecules is endothermic, but we still observed a rather fast decay of the molecular sample. Our results pave the way toward investigation of ultracold molecular collisions in a fully controlled manner and possibly to quantum gases of ultracold bosonic molecules with strong dipolar interactions.

Creation of Ultracold Rb 87 Cs 133 Molecules in the Rovibrational Ground State

We report the creation of a sample of over 1000 ultracold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ molecules in the lowest rovibrational ground state, from an atomic mixture of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$, by magnetoassociation on an interspecies Feshbach resonance followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). We measure the binding energy of the RbCs molecule to be $hc\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3811.576(1)\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and the $|{v}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=0,{J}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=0⟩$ to $|{v}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=0,{J}^{\ensuremath{'}\ensuremath{'}}=2⟩$ splitting to be $h\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2940.09(6)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MHz}$. Stark spectroscopy of the rovibrational ground state yields an electric dipole moment of 1.225(3)(8) D, where the values in parentheses are the statistical and systematic uncertainties, respectively. We can access a space-fixed dipole moment of 0.355(2)(4) D, which is substantially higher than in previous work.

Spectroscopy and Ground-State Transfer of Ultracold Bosonic K 39 133 Cs Molecules

Krzysztof P. Zamarski, Charly Beulenkamp, Yi Zeng +2 more

We report the creation of ultracold samples of ^{39}K^{133}Cs molecules in their rovibrational ground state. By investigating potentially suitable excited states using one- and two-photon spectroscopy, we have identified a pathway to the ground state via an exceptionally narrow intermediate state. Using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, we create trapped samples of up to 3500 molecules at temperatures of 1 μK with one-way efficiencies of 71%. The lifetime of these samples is limited by a near-universal two-body loss process, which could shed new light on similar loss mechanisms in other molecular species. Our results are a step toward establishing an alternative molecular species as a platform for the study of bosonic and fermionic quantum matter with strong dipolar interactions.

Creation of a strongly dipolar gas of ultracold ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules

Mingyang Guo, Bing Zhu, Bo Lü +7 more

We report the successful production of an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules with a large induced electric dipole moment. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules formed via magneto-association, the lowest rovibrational and hyperfine level of the electronic ground state is populated following a high efficiency and high resolution two-photon Raman process. The high purity absolute ground-state samples have up to 8000 molecules and densities of over $10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. With an external electric field, we have induced an effective dipole moment over one Debye, enough to provide truly strong and long-range dipolar interactions. Bimolecular reaction between ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules is endothermic, but we still observed a rather fast decay of the molecular sample. Our results pave the way toward investigation of ultracold molecular collisions in a fully controlled manner, and possibly to quantum gases of ultracold bosonic molecules with strong dipolar interactions.

Production of Ultracold, Polar RbCs* Molecules via Photoassociation

Andrew J. Kerman, Jeremy Sage, Sunil Sainis +2 more

We have produced ultracold, polar ${\mathrm{R}\mathrm{b}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{s}}^{*}$ molecules via photoassociation in a laser-cooled mixture of Rb and Cs atoms. Using a model of the ${\mathrm{R}\mathrm{b}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{s}}^{*}$ molecular interaction which reproduces the observed rovibrational structure, we infer decay rates in our experiments into deeply bound $X\text{ }^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}^{+}$ ground-state RbCs vibrational levels as high as $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5}\text{ }{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ per level. Population in such deeply bound levels could be efficiently transferred to the vibrational ground state using a single stimulated Raman transition, opening the possibility to create large samples of stable, ultracold polar molecules.
