Spin Squeezing by means of Driven Superradiance

Abstract

We discuss the possibility of generating spin squeezed states by means of driven superradiance, analytically affirming and broadening the finding in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 080502 (2013)]. In an earlier paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 140402 (2014)] the authors determined that spontaneous purely-dissipative Dicke model superradiance failed to generate any entanglement over the course of the system's time evolution. In this article we show that by adding a driving field, however, the Dicke model system can be tuned to evolve toward an entangled steady state. We discuss how to optimize the driving frequency to maximize the entanglement. We show that the resulting entanglement is fairly strong, in that it leads to spin squeezing.

Heisenberg-Langevin approach to driven superradiance

Ori Somech, Yoav Shimshi, Ephraim Shahmoon

We present an analytical approach for the study of driven Dicke superradiance based on a Heisenberg-Langevin formulation. We calculate the steady-state fluctuations of both the atomic-spin and light-field operators. While the atoms become entangled below a critical drive, exhibiting spin squeezing, we show that the radiated light is in a classical-like coherent state whose amplitude and spectrum are identical to those of the incident driving field. Therefore, the nonlinear atomic system scatters light as a linear classical scatterer. Our results are consistent with the recent theory of coherently radiating spin states. The presented Heisenberg-Langevin approach should be simple to generalize for treating superradiance beyond the permutation-symmetric Dicke model.

Critical steady states of all-to-all squeezed and driven superradiance: An analytic approach

Diego Barberena, Ana María Rey

We analyze the properties across steady-state phase transitions of two all-to-all driven-dissipative spin models that describe possible dynamics of $N$ two-level systems inside an optical cavity: squeezed superradiance and driven superradiance. We show that the finite size behavior around the critical points can be captured correctly by carefully identifying the relevant nonlinearities in the Holstein-Primakoff representation of spin operators in terms of bosonic variables. With these tools, we calculate analytically various observables across the phase transitions and obtain their finite size scalings, including numerical prefactors. In particular, we look at the amount of spin squeezing carried by the steady states, of relevance for quantum metrology applications, and describe in analytical detail the mechanism by which the optimal spin squeezing acquires logarithmic corrections that depend on the system size. We also demonstrate that the logarithmic nature of these corrections is difficult to characterize through numerical procedures for any experimentally realistic and/or simulable values of particle number. We complement all of our analytical arguments with numerical benchmarks.

Driven-dissipative four-mode squeezing of multilevel atoms in an optical cavity

Bhuvanesh Sundar, Diego Barberena, Ana María Rey +1 more

We utilize multilevel atoms trapped in a driven resonant optical cavity to produce scalable multimode squeezed states for quantum sensing and metrology. While superradiance or collective dissipative emission by itself has been typically a detrimental effect for entanglement generation in optical cavities, in the presence of additional drives it can also be used as an entanglement resource. In a recent work [B. Sundar, D. Barberena, A. M. Rey, and A. Pi\~neiro Orioli, companion paper, Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 033601 (2024)], we described a protocol for the dissipative generation of two-mode squeezing in the dark state of a six-level system with only one relevant polarization. There we showed that up to two quadratures can be squeezed. Here, we develop a generalized analytic treatment to calculate the squeezing in any multilevel system where atoms can collectively decay by emitting light into two polarization modes in a cavity. We show that in this more general system up to four spin squeezed quadratures can be obtained. We study how finite-size effects constrain the reachable squeezing, and analytically compute the scaling with $N$. Our findings are readily testable in current optical cavity experiments with alkaline-earth-like atoms.

Heisenberg-Limited Spin Squeezing via Bosonic Parametric Driving

Peter Groszkowski, Hoi-Kwan Lau, Catherine Leroux +2 more

Spin-spin interactions generated by a detuned cavity are a standard mechanism for generating highly entangled spin squeezed states. We show here how introducing a weak detuned parametric (two-photon) drive on the cavity provides a powerful means for controlling the form of the induced interactions. Without a drive, the induced interactions cannot generate Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing, but a weak optimized drive gives rise to an ideal two-axis twist interaction and Heisenberg-limited squeezing. Parametric driving is also advantageous in regimes limited by dissipation, and enables an alternate adiabatic scheme which can prepare optimally squeezed, Dicke-like states. Our scheme is compatible with a number of platforms, including solid-state systems where spin ensembles are coupled to superconducting quantum circuits or mechanical modes.

Initiation of Superradiance from Different Collective-Spin States

Adnan Alabbar, Zhenghao Zhang, Girish S. Agarwal

Superradiance is an extensive cooperative spontaneous emission phenomenon, exhibited by some atomic collective-spin states. However, distinct initial states differ in their decay dynamics. Dicke states $|j,m\rangle$ with distinct numbers of excitations $n=m+j$, driven by vacuum fluctuations, have their peak emission intensity shifted in time. Rotating Dicke states relative to the decay axis introduces an interesting parity structure that affects the pulse profile and photon correlations. Squeezed-bath prepared states undergo a squeezing-controlled crossover to the rotated Dicke states, making the emission character dependent on the amount of squeezing transferred from light to the atomic state. For semiclassical states with a macroscopic dipole moment, like the atomic coherent state, the emission intensity depends on their polarization. We present detailed results on the superradiant dynamics of a representative selection of states expanded in Dicke states to highlight the initial state as an independent dynamical control parameter. For large-$N$, we are able to predict fairly accurately the pulse profile in each case using the mean-field approximation, an approach based on the Fokker--Planck equation. We also present comparative results on the intensity correlation function, quantify the coherent and incoherent contributions of the emission, and contrast between small and large ensembles.

Driven quadrature and spin squeezing in a cavity-coupled ensemble of two-level states

Haitham A. R. El-Ella

The generated magnitude of quadrature squeezing in a cavity-coupled ensemble, which is continuously driven using a coherent off-axis field, is theoretically explored. Using a truncated set of equations of motion derived from a Dicke Hamiltonian, steady-state quadrature squeezing of the cavity field is numerically calculated to approach a limit of $\ensuremath{-}3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$, while frequency-modulated quadrature squeezing approaches a limit of $\ensuremath{-}14\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$, in the absence of pure dephasing and as a function of the ensemble's size and detuning. The impact of pure dephasing on steady-state quadrature squeezing is shown to be mitigated by increased detuning of the driving field, while frequency-modulated squeezing is only shielded in a regime where the cumulative coupling and driving rates are in excess of the pure-dephasing rate. Spin-squeezed entanglement is also calculated to occur simultaneously with weakly driven frequency-modulated quadrature squeezing.
