Strong subadditivity and emergent surface

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce two bounds which we call the upper differential entropy and the lower differential entropy for an infinite family of intervals (strips) in quantum field theory. The two bounds are equal provided that the theory is translational invariant and the entanglement entropy varies smoothly with respect to the interval. When the theory has a holographic dual, strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy indicates that there is always an emergent surface whose gravitational entropy is exactly given by the bound.

Holographic proof of the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy

Matthew Headrick, Tadashi Takayanagi

When a quantum system is divided into subsystems, their entanglement entropies are subject to an inequality known as strong subadditivity. For a field theory this inequality can be stated as follows: given any two regions of space $A$ and $B$, $S(A)+S(B)\ensuremath{\ge}S(A\ensuremath{\cup}B)+S(A\ensuremath{\cap}B)$. Recently, a method has been found for computing entanglement entropies in any field theory for which there is a holographically dual gravity theory. We give a simple geometrical proof of strong subadditivity employing this holographic prescription.

The strong subadditivity of holographic entanglement entropy ; from boundary to bulk

Ali Izadi Rad

One decade ago, Ryu-Takayanagi explicitly introduced a formula that relates the entropy of a subregion in CFT system to a geometrical quantity which is called minimal surface in hyperbolic space. This formula extended to the idea of connection of gravy to quantum mechanics of gauge/gravity duality. This duality which can help us to learn a more interesting feature of each side from the other. Quantum systems obey from some constraints come from the quantum information theory. I would be interesting to find out what is the dual of this constraint in the gravitation system. Dual to the specific class of quantum theories which is called conformal field theories. One of the most significant constraint that QFTs should obey is the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy. These constraints let the theories have bound on the energy spectrum from the below; Recently there has been the development that the combination of monotonicity of relative entropy and the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy is equal to have a specific bound on the energy momentum tensor, called quantum null energy condition. In this thesis, we re-look to this argument by introducing the entanglement density and obtain a differential operator from the strong subadditivity and exploiting from the Markov property of the vacuum of CFT. In the next step, by using from the Ryu-Takayangi, we rewrite the strong subadditivity inequality regarding geometrical quantities. By using from the kinematic languages and intertwinement, we realize that the strong subadditivity at the boundary implies new bound on averaged energy condition which has some common feature with the quantum null energy condition statement.

The dual of non-extremal area: differential entropy in higher dimensions

Vijay Balasubramanian, Charles Rabideau

Abstract The Ryu-Takayanagi formula relates entanglement entropy in a field theory to the area of extremal surfaces anchored to the boundary of a dual AdS space. It is interesting to ask if there is also an information theoretic interpretation of the areas of non-extremal surfaces that are not necessarily boundary-anchored. In general, the physics outside such surfaces is associated to observers restricted to a time-strip in the dual boundary field theory. When the latter is two-dimensional, it is known that the differential entropy associated to the strip computes the length of the dual bulk curve, and has an interpretation in terms of the information cost in Bell pairs of restoring correlations inaccessible to observers in the strip. A general realization of this formalism in higher dimensions is unknown. We first prove a no-go theorem eliminating candidate expressions for higher dimensional differential entropy based on entropic c-theorems. Then we propose a new formula in terms of an integral of shape derivatives of the entanglement entropy of ball shaped regions. Our proposal stems from the physical requirement that differential entropy must be locally finite and conformally invariant. Demanding cancelation of the well-known UV divergences of entanglement entropy in field theory guides us to our conjecture, which we test for surfaces in AdS4. Our results suggest a candidate c-function for field theories in arbitrary dimensions.

Holographic entanglement entropy inequalities beyond strong subadditivity

Lucas Daguerre, M. D. Ginzburg, Gonzalo Torroba

Abstract The vacuum entanglement entropy in quantum field theory provides nonperturbative information about renormalization group flows. Most studies so far have focused on the universal terms, related to the Weyl anomaly in even space-time dimensions, and the sphere free energy F in odd dimensions. In this work we study the entanglement entropy on a sphere of radius R in a large radius limit, for field theories with gravity duals. At large radius the entropy admits a geometric expansion in powers of R; the leading term is the well-known area term, and we also consider the subleading contributions. These terms can be physical, they contain information about the full renormalization group flow, and they reproduce known monotonicity theorems in particular cases. We set up an efficient method for calculating them using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the holographic entanglement entropy. We first reproduce the known result for the area term, the coefficient multiplying Rd−2 in the entanglement entropy. We then obtain the holographic result for the Rd−4 term and establish its irreversibility. Finally, we derive the Rd−6 coefficient for holographic theories, and also establish its irreversibility. This result goes beyond what has been proved in quantum field theory based on strong subadditivity, and hints towards new methods for analyzing the monotonicity of the renormalization group in space-time dimensions bigger than four.

Holographic entanglement entropy : structure and applications from noncommutative field theories to energy conditions

Charles Rabideau

The holographic Ryu-Takayanagi formula for entanglement entropy connects the entanglement of a field theory to the geometry of a dual gravitational theory in a straightforward and universal way. The first part of this thesis applies this formula to study the entanglement entropy in strongly coupled noncommutative field theories. It is found that the ground state of these theories have substantial entanglement at the length scale of the noncommutativity. The entanglement entropy in a different perturbative regime is also computed, where in contrast it is found that noncommutative interactions do not induce long range entanglement in the ground state to leading order in perturbations theory. The second part of this thesis explores some general consequences of this holographic formula for the entanglement entropy. Identities involving entanglement entropies are related to nontrivial geometric constraints on gravitational duals. In particular, the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy is used to show that dual three dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravitational states must obey an averaged null energy condition. Finally, this holographic formula allows us at least in principle to express the entanglement entropy of a region in a holographic field theory in terms of the one-point functions in that theory. This is explored in the context of a two dimensional conformal field theory where explicit calculations are possible. Our results in this case allow us to extend a recent proposal that the entanglement entropy of states near the vacuum of conformal theories can be understood by propagation in an auxiliary de Sitter space.
