Abstract

We demonstrate deterministic and robust generation of pulsed resonance fluorescence single photons from a single InGaAs quantum dot using the method of rapid adiabatic passage. Comparative study is performed with transform-limited, negatively chirped and positively chirped pulses, identifying the last one to be the most robust against fluctuation of driving strength. The generated single photons are background free, have a vanishing two-photon emission probability of 0.3% and a raw (corrected) two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of 97.9% (99.5%), reaching a precision that places single photons at the threshold for fault-tolerant surface-code quantum computing. The single-photon source can be readily scaled up to multi-photon entanglement and used for quantum metrology, boson sampling and linear optical quantum computing.

Deterministic and Robust Generation of Single Photons from a Single Quantum Dot with 99.5% Indistinguishability Using Adiabatic Rapid Passage

Yu-Jia Wei, Yuming He, Ming-Cheng Chen +8 more

Single photons are attractive candidates of quantum bits (qubits) for quantum computation and are the best messengers in quantum networks. Future scalable, fault-tolerant photonic quantum technologies demand both stringently high levels of photon indistinguishability and generation efficiency. Here, we demonstrate deterministic and robust generation of pulsed resonance fluorescence single photons from a single semiconductor quantum dot using adiabatic rapid passage, a method robust against fluctuation of driving pulse area and dipole moments of solid-state emitters. The emitted photons are background-free, have a vanishing two-photon emission probability of 0.3% and a raw (corrected) two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibility of 97.9% (99.5%), reaching a precision that places single photons at the threshold for fault-tolerant surface-code quantum computing. Indistinguishable Tunable Single Photons Emitted by Spin-Flip Raman Transitions in InGaAs Quantum Dots

Yu He, Yu-Ming He, Y.-J. Wei +9 more

This Letter reports all-optically tunable and highly indistinguishable single Raman photons from a driven single quantum dot spin. The frequency, linewidth, and lifetime of the Raman photons are tunable by varying the driving field power and detuning. Under continuous-wave excitation, subnatural linewidth single photons from off-resonant Raman scattering show an indistinguishability of 0.98(3). Under π pulse excitation, spin- and time-tagged Raman fluorescence photons show an almost vanishing multiphoton emission probability of 0.01(2) and a two-photon quantum interference visibility of 0.95(3). Lastly, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is demonstrated between two single photons emitted from remote, independent quantum dots with an unprecedented visibility of 0.87(4).

Multiplexed Quantum Light States from Nanowire Quantum Dots

Kaiser, Moritz

In this thesis, several optical excitation schemes for single-photon generation in nanowire semiconductor quantum dots were investigated. Fluctuations in the excitation pulse can degrade photon quality and reduce the reliability of the source. These limitations motivated the development of a new excitation scheme called chirped stimulated adiabatic rapid passage. It is designed to be robust against fluctuations in both the energy levels of the quantum system and the laser parameters, including pulse power, spectral detuning, and time delay. Building upon the principles of adiabatic rapid passage, the proposed approach employs an additional chirped stimulation pulse, yielding an enhancement in photon generation by a factor of 1.47 compared to adiabatic rapid passage. These features make the technique promising for the stable generation of single photons, with improved performance under realistic experimental conditions.

Near-Unity Indistinguishability Single Photon Source for Large-Scale Integrated Quantum Optics

Łukasz Dusanowski, Soon-Hong Kwon, Christian Schneider +1 more

Integrated single photon sources are key building blocks for realizing scalable devices for quantum information processing. For such applications highly coherent and indistinguishable single photons on a chip are required. Here we report on a triggered resonance fluorescence single photon source based on In(Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots coupled to single- and multimode ridge waveguides. We demonstrate the generation of highly linearly polarized resonance fluorescence photons with 99.1% (96.0%) single photon purity and 97.5% (95.0%) indistinguishability in case of multimode (single mode) waveguide devices fulfilling the strict requirements imposed by multi-interferometric quantum optics applications. Our integrated triggered single photon source can be readily scaled up, promising a realistic pathway for on-chip linear optical quantum simulation, quantum computation, and quantum networks.

Near-Transform-Limited Single Photons from an Efficient Solid-State Quantum Emitter

Hui Wang, Z.-C. Duan, Y.-H. Li +12 more

By pulsed s-shell resonant excitation of a single quantum dot-micropillar system, we generate long streams of 1000 near-transform-limited single photons with high mutual indistinguishability. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of two photons is measured as a function of their emission time separation varying from 13 ns to 14.7 μs, where the visibility slightly drops from 95.9(2)% to a plateau of 92.1(5)% through a slow dephasing process occurring at a time scale of 0.7 μs. A temporal and spectral analysis reveals the pulsed resonance fluorescence single photons are close to the transform limit, which are readily useful for multiphoton entanglement and interferometry experiments.

Post-Selected Indistinguishable Photons from the Resonance Fluorescence of a Single Quantum Dot in a Microcavity

Serkan Ateş, Sven M. Ulrich, Stephan Reitzenstein +3 more

Applying continuous-wave pure resonant s-shell optical excitation of individual quantum dots in a high-quality micropillar cavity, we demonstrate the generation of post-selected indistinguishable photons in resonance fluorescence. Close to ideal visibility contrast of 90% is verified by polarization-dependent Hong-Ou-Mandel two-photon interference measurements. Furthermore, a strictly resonant continuous-wave excitation together with controlling the spontaneous emission lifetime of the single quantum dots via tunable emitter-mode coupling (Purcell) is proven as a versatile scheme to generate close to Fourier transform-limited (T2/(2T1)=0.91) single photons even at 80% of the emission saturation level.
