Braiding Non-Abelian Quasiholes in Fractional Quantum Hall States

Abstract

Quasiholes in certain fractional quantum Hall states are promising candidates for the experimental realization of non-Abelian anyons. They are assumed to be localized excitations, and to display non-Abelian statistics when sufficiently separated, but these properties have not been explicitly demonstrated except for the Moore-Read state. In this work, we apply the newly developed matrix product state technique to examine these exotic excitations. For the Moore-Read and the Z_{3} Read-Rezayi states, we estimate the quasihole radii, and determine the correlation lengths associated with the exponential convergence of the braiding statistics. We provide the first microscopic verification for the Fibonacci nature of the Z_{3} Read-Rezayi quasiholes. We also present evidence for the failure of plasma screening in the nonunitary Gaffnian wave function.

Non-Abelian quasiholes in lattice Moore-Read states and parent Hamiltonians

Sourav Manna, Julia Wildeboer, Germán Sierra +1 more

This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with quasiholes included are ground states. One advantage of these Hamiltonians lies therein that we can now braid the quasiholes just by changing the coupling strengths in the Hamiltonian since the Hamiltonian is a function of the positions of the quasiholes. The methodology exploited in this article can also be used to construct other kinds of lattice fractional quantum Hall models containing quasiholes, for example, investigation of Fibonacci quasiholes in lattice Read-Rezayi states.

Monte Carlo Evaluation of Non-Abelian Statistics

Yaroslav Tserkovnyak, Steven H. Simon

We develop a general framework to (numerically) study adiabatic braiding of quasiholes in fractional quantum Hall systems. Specifically, we investigate the Moore-Read (MR) state at nu=1/2 filling factor, a known candidate for non-Abelian statistics, which appears to actually occur in nature. The non-Abelian statistics of MR quasiholes is demonstrated explicitly for the first time, confirming the results predicted by conformal field theories.

Tracing non-Abelian anyons via impurity particles

Niccolò Baldelli, Bruno Juliá-Díaz, Utso Bhattacharya +2 more

Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landau level, we are able to write down the corresponding many-body wave function describing both the Moore-Read liquid and the impurities. Through Monte Carlo sampling, we determine the impurity angular momentum, and we show that it suggests a quantum-statistical parameter $\ensuremath{\alpha}=a\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{-}b+P/2$ for the quasiholes, where $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ ranges from 0 for bosons to 1 for fermions. A reasonable agreement with the Monte Carlo results is obtained for $a=1/4$, $b=1/8$, and $P=0,1$ depending on the parity of the particle number in the Moore-Read liquid. This parity dependence of the angular momentum serves as an unambiguous demonstration of the non-Abelian nature of the excitations. In addition to the studies of excitations in the Moore-Read liquid, we also apply our scheme to Laughlin liquids, for which we focus on interacting bosonic impurities. With this, the impurities themselves form Laughlin states, which allows for a study of hierarchical fractional quantum Hall states.

Braiding properties of paired spin-singlet and non-Abelian hierarchy states

Yoran Tournois, Eddy Ardonne

Abstract We study explicit model wave functions describing the fundamental quasiholes in a class of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states. This class is a family of paired spin-singlet states with internal degrees of freedom. We determine the braid statistics of the quasiholes by determining the monodromy of the explicit quasihole wave functions, that is how they transform under exchanges of quasihole coordinates. The statistics is shown to be the same as that of the quasiholes in the Read–Rezayi states, up to a phase. We also discuss the application of this result to a class of non-Abelian hierarchy wave functions.

Correlation Lengths and Topological Entanglement Entropies of Unitary and Nonunitary Fractional Quantum Hall Wave Functions

Benoit Estienne, Nicolas Regnault, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig

Using the newly developed matrix product state formalism for non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, we address the question of whether a FQH trial wave function written as a correlation function in a nonunitary conformal field theory (CFT) can describe the bulk of a gapped FQH phase. We show that the nonunitary Gaffnian state exhibits clear signatures of a pathological behavior. As a benchmark we compute the correlation length of a Moore-Read state and find it to be finite in the thermodynamic limit. By contrast, the Gaffnian state has an infinite correlation length in (at least) the non-Abelian sector, and is therefore gapless. We also compute the topological entanglement entropy of several non-Abelian states with and without quasiholes. For the first time in the FQH effect the results are in excellent agreement in all topological sectors with the CFT prediction for unitary states. For the nonunitary Gaffnian state in finite size systems, the topological entanglement entropy seems to behave like that of the composite fermion Jain state at equal filling.

Many-Anyon Braiding in Non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation

Ting-Tung Wang, Ha Quang Trung, Qianhui Xu +3 more

We employ the hybrid Monte Carlo method to efficiently compute the many-anyon non-Abelian braiding matrices associated with different braiding schemes of the Moore-Read quasiholes. A novel proposal in this work is that anyon braiding schemes based on a global rotation are robust against finite-size effects, as demonstrated by benchmarking their errors in the braiding matrix against those of a simple two-anyon exchange. Moreover, we investigate how electron-electron interactions and local electrostatic trapping potentials influence the energetic preference of different fusion channels. Their effect on the non-Abelian braiding matrices has been verified, a surprising phenomenon that demonstrates long-range entanglement of non-Abelian states. Our results are relevant to the experimental realization of non-Abelian physics in fractional quantum Hall and other analogous systems, including the fast-growing field of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states in moiré materials.
