Hartree-Fock dynamics for weakly interacting fermions

Abstract

We review recent results concerning the evolution of fermionic systems. We are interested in the mean field regime, where particles experience many weak collisions. For fermions, the mean field regime is naturally linked with a semiclassical limit. Assuming some regularity of the interaction potential we show that the many body evolution of initial states close to Slater determinants exhibiting the appropriate semiclassical structure can be approximated by the Hartree-Fock equation. Our method provides precise bounds on the rate of the convergence.

3 Mean-field Evolution of Fermionic Systems

Niels Benedikter, Marcello Porta, Benjamin Schlein

The mean field limit for systems of many fermions is naturally coupled with a semiclassical limit. This makes the analysis of the mean field regime much more involved, compared with bosonic systems. In this paper, we study the dynamics of initial data close to a Slater determinant, whose reduced one-particle density is an orthogonal projection ωN with the appropriate semiclassical structure. Assuming some regularity of the interaction potential, we show that the evolution of such an initial data remains close to a Slater determinant, with reduced one-particle density given by the solution of the Hartree-Fock equation with initial data ωN. Our result holds for all (semiclassical) times, and gives effective bounds on the rate of the convergence towards the Hartree-Fock dynamics. 1

Dynamics of Mean-Field Fermi Systems with Nonzero Pairing

Stefano Marcantoni, Marcello Porta, Julien Sabin

We study the dynamics of many-body Fermi systems, for a class of initial data which are close to quasi-free states exhibiting a nonvanishing pairing matrix. We focus on the mean-field scaling, which for fermionic systems is naturally coupled with a semiclassical scaling. Under the assumption that the initial datum enjoys a suitable semiclassical structure, we give a rigorous derivation of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equation, a nonlinear effective evolution equation for the generalized one-particle density matrix of the system, as the number of particles goes to infinity. Our result holds for all macroscopic times, and provides bounds for the rate of convergence.

Mean-field evolution of fermionic mixed states

Niels Benedikter, Vojkan Jakšić, Marcello Porta +2 more

In this paper we study the dynamics of fermionic mixed states in the mean-field regime. We consider initial states that are close to quasi-free states and prove that, under suitable assumptions on the initial data and on the many-body interaction, the quantum evolution of such initial data is well approximated by a suitable quasi-free state. In particular, we prove that the evolution of the reduced one-particle density matrix converges, as the number of particles goes to infinity, to the solution of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation. Our result holds for all times and gives effective estimates on the rate of convergence of the many-body dynamics towards the Hartree-Fock evolution.

Weakly interacting Fermions: mean-field and semiclassical regimes

Chiara Saffirio

The derivation of effective macroscopic theories approximating microscopic systems of interacting particles is a major question in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. In these notes we present an approximation of systems made by many fermions interacting via inverse power law potentials in the mean-field and semiclassical regimes, reviewing the material presented at the 11th summer school "Methods and Models of Kinetic Theory" held in Pesaro in June 2022. More precisely, we focus on weakly interacting fermions whose collective effect can be approximated by an averaged potential in convolution form, and review recent mean-field techniques based on second quantization approaches. As a first step we obtain a reduced description given by the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation. As a second step we look at longer time scales where a semiclassical description starts to be relevant and approximate the many-body dynamics with the Vlasov equation, which describes the evolution of the effective probability density of particles on the one particle phase space.

Mean-field evolution of fermionic systems

We study the dynamics of interacting fermionic systems, in the mean-field regime. We consider initial states which are close to quasi-free states and prove that, under suitable assumptions on the inital data and on the many-body interaction, the quantum evolution of the system is approximated by a time-dependent quasi-free state. In particular we prove that the evolution of the reduced one-particle density matrix converges, as the number of particles goes to infinity, to the solution of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation. Our theorems allow to describe the dynamics of both pure states (zero temperature states) and mixed states (positive temperature states). Our results hold for all times, and give effective estimates on the rate of convergence towards the Hartree-Fock evolution. The results on pure states are based on joint works with N. Benedikter and B. Schlein, [5, 6]; while those on mixed states are based on a joint work with N. Benedikter, V. Jaksic, C. Saffirio and B. Schlein, [7].

A New Method and a New Scaling for Deriving Fermionic Mean-Field Dynamics

Sören Petrat, Peter Pickl

We introduce a new method for deriving the time-dependent Hartree or Hartree-Fock equations as an effective mean-field dynamics from the microscopic Schrödinger equation for fermionic many-particle systems in quantum mechanics. The method is an adaption of the method used in Pickl (Lett. Math. Phys. 97 (2) 151–164 2011 ) for bosonic systems to fermionic systems. It is based on a Gronwall type estimate for a suitable measure of distance between the microscopic solution and an antisymmetrized product state. We use this method to treat a new mean-field limit for fermions with long-range interactions in a large volume. Some of our results hold for singular attractive or repulsive interactions. We can also treat Coulomb interaction assuming either a mild singularity cutoff or certain regularity conditions on the solutions to the Hartree(-Fock) equations. In the considered limit, the kinetic and interaction energy are of the same order, while the average force is subleading. For some interactions, we prove that the Hartree(-Fock) dynamics is a more accurate approximation than a simpler dynamics that one would expect from the subleading force. With our method we also treat the mean-field limit coupled to a semiclassical limit, which was discussed in the literature before, and we recover some of the previous results. All results hold for initial data close (but not necessarily equal) to antisymmetrized product states and we always provide explicit rates of convergence.
