Abstract

Iridium oxides with a honeycomb lattice have been identified as platforms for the much anticipated Kitaev topological spin liquid: the spin-orbit entangled states of Ir(4+) in principle generate precisely the required type of anisotropic exchange. However, other magnetic couplings can drive the system away from the spin-liquid phase. With this in mind, here we disentangle the different magnetic interactions in Li2IrO3, a honeycomb iridate with two crystallographically inequivalent sets of adjacent Ir sites. Our ab initio many-body calculations show that, while both Heisenberg and Kitaev nearest-neighbour couplings are present, on one set of Ir-Ir bonds the former dominates, resulting in the formation of spin-triplet dimers. The triplet dimers frame a strongly frustrated triangular lattice and by exact cluster diagonalization we show that they remain protected in a wide region of the phase diagram.

The vicinity of hyper-honeycomb β-Li2IrO3 to a three-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid state

Vamshi M. Katukuri, Ravi Yadav, Liviu Hozoi +2 more

Due to the combination of a substantial spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects, iridium oxides hold a prominent place in the search for novel quantum states of matter, including, e.g., Kitaev spin liquids and topological Weyl states. We establish the promise of the very recently synthesized hyper-honeycomb iridate β-Li2IrO3 in this regard. A detailed theoretical analysis reveals the presence of large ferromagnetic first-neighbor Kitaev interactions, while a second-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange drives the ground state from ferro to zigzag order via a three-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid and an incommensurate phase. Experiment puts the system in the latter regime but the Kitaev spin liquid is very close and reachable by a slight modification of the ratio between the second- and first-neighbor couplings, for instance via strain.

First-Principles Study of the Honeycomb-Lattice Iridates Na2IrO3 in the Presence of Strong Spin-Orbit Interaction and Electron Correlations

Youhei Yamaji, Yusuke Nomura, Moyuru Kurita +2 more

An effective low-energy Hamiltonian of itinerant electrons for iridium oxide Na2IrO3 is derived by an ab initio downfolding scheme. The model is then reduced to an effective spin model on a honeycomb lattice by the strong coupling expansion. Here we show that the ab initio model contains spin-spin anisotropic exchange terms in addition to the extensively studied Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and allows us to describe the experimentally observed zigzag magnetic order, interpreted as the state stabilized by the antiferromagnetic coupling of the ferromagnetic chains. We clarify possible routes to realize quantum spin liquids from existing Na2IrO3.

Spin-Orbit Coupled Quantum Magnetism in the 3D-Honeycomb Iridates

Itamar Kimchi

In this doctoral dissertation, we consider the significance of spin-orbit coupling for the phases of matter which arise for strongly correlated electrons. We explore emergent behavior in quantum many-body systems, including symmetry-breaking orders, quantum spin liquids, and unconventional superconductivity. Our study is cemented by a particular class of Mott-insulating materials, centered around a family of two- and three-dimensional iridium oxides, whose honeycomb-like lattice structure admits peculiar magnetic interactions, the so-called Kitaev exchange. By analyzing recent experiments on these compounds, we show that this unconventional exchange is the key ingredient in describing their magnetism, and then use a combination of numerical and analytical techniques to investigate the implications for the phase diagram as well as the physics of the proximate three-dimensional quantum spin liquid phases. These long-ranged-entangled fractionalized phases should exhibit special features, including finite-temperature stability as well as unconventional high-Tc superconductivity upon charge-doping, which should aid future experimental searches for spin liquid physics. Our study explores the nature of frustration and fractionalization which can arise in quantum systems in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling.

Kitaev-like honeycomb magnets: Global phase behavior and emergent effective models

Juraj Rusnačko, Dorota Gotfryd, Jiří Chaloupka

Compounds of transition metal ions with strong spin-orbit coupling recently attracted attention due to the possibility to host frustrated bond-dependent anisotropic magnetic interactions. In general, such interactions lead to complex phase diagrams that may include exotic phases, e.g., the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we report on our comprehensive analysis of the global phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model relevant to honeycomb lattice compounds ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ and $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$. We have utilized recently developed method based on spin coherent states that enabled us to resolve arbitrary spin patterns in the cluster ground states obtained by exact diagonalization. Global trends in the phase diagram are understood in combination with the analytical mappings of the Hamiltonian that uncover peculiar links to known models---Heisenberg, Ising, Kitaev, or compass models on the honeycomb lattice---or reveal entire manifolds of exact fluctuation-free ground states. Finally, our study can serve as a methodological example that can be applied to other spin models with complex bond-dependent non-Heisenberg interactions.

Predominance of the Kitaev interaction in a three-dimensional honeycomb iridate: From ab initio to spin model

Heung‐Sik Kim, Eric Kin-Ho Lee, Yong Baek Kim

The recently discovered three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb iridate, β -Li 2 IrO 3 , has raised hopes for the realization of the dominant Kitaev interaction between spin-orbit entangled local moments due to its near-ideal lattice structure. If true, this material may lie close to the sought-after quantum spin-liquid phase in three dimensions. Utilizing ab initio electronic structure calculations, we first show that the spin-orbit entangled basis, , correctly captures the low-energy electronic structure. The effective spin model derived in the strong-coupling limit supplemented by the ab initio results is shown to be dominated by the Kitaev interaction. We demonstrated that the possible range of parameters is consistent with a non-coplanar spiral magnetic order found in a recent experiment. All of these analyses suggest that β -Li 2 IrO 3 may be the closest among known materials to the Kitaev spin-liquid regime.
