Abstract

We investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in a 2D Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), as a function of the two-body binding energy and a perpendicular Zeeman field. By including a generic form of the SOC, as a function of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms, we study the evolution between the experimentally relevant equal Rashba-Dresselhaus (ERD) case and the Rashba-only (RO) case. We show that in the ERD case, at a fixed nonzero Zeeman field, the BKT transition temperature T(BKT) is increased by the presence of SOC for all values of the binding energy. We also find a significant increase in the value of the Clogston limit compared to the case without SOC. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the superfluid density tensor becomes anisotropic (except in the RO case), leading to an anisotropic phase-fluctuation action that describes elliptic vortices and antivortices, which become circular in the RO limit. This deformation constitutes an important experimental signature for superfluidity in a 2D Fermi gas with ERD SOC. Finally, we show that the anisotropic sound velocities exhibit anomalies at low temperatures, in the vicinity of quantum phase transitions between topologically distinct uniform superfluid phases.

Quantum phase transitions and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in a two-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Jacques Tempere, Carlos A. R. Sá de Melo

We study the effect of spin-orbit coupling on both the zero-temperature and nonzero-temperature behavior of a two-dimensional Fermi gas. We include a generic combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms into the system Hamiltonian, which allows us to study both the experimentally relevant equal-Rashba-Dresselhaus (ERD) limit and the Rashba-only (RO) limit. At zero temperature, we derive the phase diagram as a function of the two-body binding energy and Zeeman field. In the ERD case, this phase diagram reveals several topologically distinct uniform superfluid phases, classified according to the nodal structure of the quasiparticle excitation energies. Furthermore, we use a momentum-dependent SU(2) rotation to transform the system into a generalized helicity basis, revealing that spin-orbit coupling induces a triplet pairing component of the order parameter. At nonzero temperature, we study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition by including phase fluctuations of the order parameter up to second order. We show that the superfluid density becomes anisotropic due to the presence of spin-orbit coupling (except in the RO case). This leads both to elliptic vortices and antivortices, and to anisotropic sound velocities. The latter prove to be sensitive to quantum phase transitions between topologically distinct phases. We show further that at a fixed nonzero Zeeman field, the BKT critical temperature is increased by the presence of ERD spin-orbit coupling. Subsequently, we demonstrate that the Clogston limit becomes infinite: ${T}_{\mathrm{BKT}}$ remains nonzero at all finite values of the Zeeman field. We conclude by extending the quantum phase transition lines to nonzero temperature, using the nodal structure of the quasiparticle spectrum, thus connecting the BKT critical temperature with the zero-temperature results.

Superfluid density and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of a spin-orbit-coupled Fulde-Ferrell superfluid

Ye Cao, Xia-Ji Liu, Lianyi He +2 more

We theoretically investigate the superfluid density and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition of a two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit-coupled atomic Fermi gas with both in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. It was recently predicted that, by tuning the two Zeeman fields, the system may exhibit different exotic Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phases, including the gapped FF, gapless FF, gapless topological FF, and gapped topological FF states. Due to the FF paring, we show that the superfluid density (tensor) of the system becomes anisotropic. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied along the $x$ direction, the tensor component along the $y$ direction ${n}_{s,yy}$ is generally larger than ${n}_{s,xx}$ in most parameter space. At zero temperature, there is always a discontinuity jump in ${n}_{s,xx}$ as the system evolves from a gapped FF into a gapless FF state. With increasing temperature, such a jump is gradually washed out. The critical BKT temperature has been calculated as functions of the spin-orbit-coupling strength, interatomic interaction strength, and in-plane and out-of-plane Zeeman fields. We predict that the novel FF superfluid phases have a significant critical BKT temperature, typically at the order of $0.1{T}_{F}$, where ${T}_{F}$ is the Fermi degenerate temperature. Therefore, their observation is within the reach of current experimental techniques in cold-atom laboratories.

Topological phases and collective modes in U(1) and SU(2) sectors of spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Jacques Tempere, Carlos A. R. Sá de Melo

We study the emergence of finite-temperature topological phase transitions of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type and the collective mode spectrum of two-dimensional Fermi gases in the presence of attractive $s$-wave interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman fields. We show that neglecting the spin-dependent phase shift on the fermionic wave function misses an important point. Including this spin-dependent shift, we derive the effective low-energy and long-wavelength quantum action for independent (unlocked) phase fluctuations in the U(1) (charge) and SU(2) (spin) sectors and show that at least two phase transitions occur because charge and spin degrees of freedom are coupled due to the presence of spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that vortex and antivortex excitations are characterized by two topological quantum numbers, corresponding to the quantized circulation of charge and spin velocities. Finally, we show that there are two collective modes in the superfluid phase at low temperatures which arise due to the coupling between sound and transverse-spin waves.

Topological superfluid phases of an atomic Fermi gas with in- and out-of-plane Zeeman fields and equal Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling

M. Iskin, A. Levent Subaşı

We analyze the effects of in- and out-of-plane Zeeman fields on the BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) evolution of a Fermi gas with equal Rashba-Dresselhaus (ERD) spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the ground state of the system involves gapless superfluid phases that can be distinguished with respect to the topology of the momentum-space regions with zero excitation energy. For the BCS-like uniform superfluid phases with zero center-of-mass momentum, the zeros may correspond to one or two doubly degenerate spheres, two or four spheres, two or four concave spheroids, or one or two doubly degenerate circles, depending on the combination of Zeeman fields and SOC. Such changes in the topology signal a quantum phase transition between distinct superfluid phases and leave their signatures on some thermodynamic quantities. We also analyze the possibility of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)--like nonuniform superfluid phases with finite center-of-mass momentum and obtain an even richer phase diagram.

BCS-BEC Crossover in 2D Fermi Gases with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

Lianyi He, Xu-Guang Huang

We present a systematic theoretical study of the BCS-BEC crossover in two-dimensional Fermi gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). By solving the exact two-body problem in the presence of an attractive short-range interaction we show that the SOC enhances the formation of the bound state: the binding energy E(B) and effective mass m(B) of the bound state grows along with the increase of the SOC. For the many-body problem, even at weak attraction, a dilute Fermi gas can evolve from a BCS superfluid state to a Bose condensation of molecules when the SOC becomes comparable to the Fermi momentum. The ground-state properties and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature are studied, and analytical results are obtained in various limits. For large SOC, the BKT transition temperature recovers that for a Bose gas with an effective mass m(B). We find that the condensate and superfluid densities have distinct behaviors in the presence of SOC: the condensate density is generally enhanced by the SOC due to the increase of the molecule binding; the superfluid density is suppressed because of the nontrivial molecule effective mass m(B).

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transition in 2D Spin-Orbit Coupled FF Superfluids

Yong Xu, Chuanwei Zhang

The experimental observation of traditional Zeeman-field induced Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids has been hindered by various challenges, in particular, the requirement of low dimensional systems. In 2D, finite temperature phase fluctuations lead to extremely small Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for FFLO superfluids, raising serious concerns regarding their experimental observability. Recently, it was shown that FFLO superfluids can be realized using a Rashba spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas subject to Zeeman fields, which may also support topological excitations such as Majorana fermions in 2D. Here we address the finite temperature BKT transition issue in this system, which may exhibit gapped, gapless, topological, and gapless topological FF phases. We find a large BKT transition temperature due to large effective superfluid densities, making it possible to observe 2D FF superfluids at finite temperature. In addition, we show that gapless FF superfluids can be stable due to their positive superfluid densities. These findings pave the way for the experimental observation of 2D gapped and gapless FF superfluids and their associated topological excitations at finite temperature.
