Abstract

The energy spectrum of a system of $N_a$ atoms of $n$ levels interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field is studied in the dipole and rotating wave approximations. We find that, under the resonant condition, it exhibits a mirror symmetry with respect to the energy $E=M$ where $M$ the total number of excitations. Thus, for any eigenstate $|ψ_M^{+}\rangle$ with energy $E=M+{\cal E}$ there exists a related eigenstate $|ψ_M^{-}\rangle$ with energy $E=M-{\cal E}$ via the unitary parity operator in the number of photons . This is independent of the dipolar coupling between the levels. We give explicit examples for $3$-level systems.

A semi-classical versus quantum description of the ground state of three-level atoms interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field

Sergio Cordero, Octavio Castaños, Ramón López–Peña +1 more

We consider N a three-level atoms (or systems) interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field in the dipolar and rotating wave approximations. The order of the quantum phase transitions is determined explicitly for each of the configurations Ξ, Λ and V , with and without detuning. The semi-classical and exact quantum calculations for both the expectation values of the total number of excitations and photon number have excellent correspondence as functions of the control parameters. We prove that the ground state of the collective regime obeys sub-Poissonian statistics for the and n distribution functions. Therefore, their corresponding fluctuations are not well described by the semi-classical approximation. We show that this can be corrected by projecting the variational state to a definite value of .

An exact analysis of spontaneous emission by a single two level atom in the rotating wave approximation. I. Analytic results

S. Swain

The problem of a single two level atom in its excited state, placed in a cavity in which no photons are present initially, and interacting with N modes of the electromagnetic field is solved exactly in the electric dipole, rotating wave approximation. Expressions for the energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors are derived, and an exact representation for the time dependent wavefunction of the system is given. These quantities are evaluated analytically for N=1,2 and 3, and the time dependent properties of the system for these values of N are investigated and discussed.

Phase transitions in three-level systems in a cavity

Eduardo Nahmad-Achar, Sergio Cordero, Octavio Castaños +1 more

A system of three-level atoms interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field in the dipolar and rotating wave approximations is studied. The order of the quantum phase transitions is determined explicitly for each of the configurations Ξ, Λ and V , with and without detuning. A semi-classical approximation to the exact quantum solution is built by projecting coherent field and matter states to a specific value of the total number of excitations. The states in parameter-space and the expectation values of relevant observables are obtained explicitly, and it is shown that those for the projected states offer an excellent approximation to the exact quantum solution. The exact form of the ground state near the triple point in the Ξ configuration is given.

Beyond the Rabi model: Light interactions with polar atomic systems in a cavity

Giovanni Scala, Karolina Słowik, Paolo Facchi A +2 more

The Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the interaction between a two-level atomic system and a single-cavity mode of the electromagnetic field, is one of the fundamental models in quantum optics. The model becomes exactly solvable by considering an atom without permanent dipole moments, whose excitation energy is quasiresonant with the cavity photon energy, and by neglecting the nonresonant (counter-rotating) terms. In this case, after including the decay of either the atom or the cavity mode to a continuum, one can derive the well-known phenomenology of quasiresonant transitions, including the fluorescence triplets. In this work we consider the most general Rabi model, incorporating the effects of permanent atomic electric dipole moments. Based on a perturbative analysis, we compare the intensities of emission lines induced by rotating terms, counter-rotating terms, and parity-symmetry-breaking terms in order to identify the parameter regimes in which these different contributions play a significant role. The analysis reveals that the emission strength related to the existence of permanent dipoles may surpass the one due to the counter-rotating interaction terms but is usually much weaker than the emission due to the main, resonant coupling. This ratio can be modified in systems with a reduced dimensionality or by engineering the energy spectral density of the continuum.

Interaction of N atoms with the radiation field in the restricted rotating-wave approximation. I. General theory

Miguel Orszag

A quantum model of N two-level atoms coupled by a single-mode radiation field under a restricted rotating-wave approximation is studied, assuming a dipole-interaction approximation and that the total number of excitations of the system is conserved. A solution is found for the case of spontaneous emission when the atoms are initially prepared in the state of complete inversion. This solution is valid for all times. A general solution of the model is also found for any initial configuration of the system, in the cases of both spontaneous and stimulated emission. This solution is in a closed form and valid for times tau < tau max .

Symmetry adapted coherent states for three-level atoms interacting with one-mode radiation

R López-Peña, Sergio Cordero, E Nahmad-Achar +1 more

We introduce a combination of coherent states as variational test functions for the atomic and radiation sectors to describe a system of N a three-level atoms interacting with a one-mode quantised electromagnetic field, with and without the rotating wave approximation, which preserves the symmetry presented by the Hamiltonian. These provide us with the possibility of finding analytical solutions for the ground and first excited states. We study the properties of these solutions for the V -configuration in the double resonance condition, and calculate the expectation values of the number of photons, the atomic populations, the total number of excitations, and their corresponding fluctuations. We also calculate the photon number distribution and the linear entropy of the reduced density matrix to estimate the entanglement between matter and radiation. For the first time, we exhibit analytical expressions for all of these quantities, as well as an analytical description for the phase diagram in parameter space, which distinguishes the normal and collective regions, and which gives us all the quantum phase transitions of the ground state from one region to the other as we vary the interaction parameters (the matter-field coupling constants) of the model, in functional form.

The energy spectrum of a system of NaN_aNa atoms of nnn levels interacting with a one-mode electromagnetic field is studied in the dipole and rotating wave approximations. We find that, under the resonant condition, it exhibits a mirror symmetry with respect to the energy E=ME=ME=M where MMM the total number of excitations. Thus, for any eigenstate ∣ψM+⟩|ψ_M^{+}\rangle∣ψM+⟩ with energy E=M+EE=M+{\cal E}E=M+E there exists a related eigenstate ∣ψM−⟩|ψ_M^{-}\rangle∣ψM−⟩ with energy E=M−EE=M-{\cal E}E=M−E via the unitary parity operator in the number of photons . This is independent of the dipolar coupling between the levels. We give explicit examples for 333-level systems.
