Phase-space representation of completely positive quantum operation: Invertible subdynamics of two-mode squeezed states

Abstract

Completely positive quantum operations are frequently discussed in the contexts of statistical mechanics and quantum information. They are customarily given by maps forming positive operator-values measures. To intuitively understand the physical meanings of such abstract operations, the method of phase-space representations is examined. This method enables one to grasp the operations in terms of the classical statistical notions. As an example of physical importance, here, the phase-space representation of the completely positive quantum operation arising from the single-mode subdynamics of the two-mode squeezed vacuum state, which maps from the vacuum state at vanishing temperature to mixed states with perfect decoherence including the thermal state, is studied. It is found in the P representation that remarkably this operation is invertible, implying that coherence lost by the quantum operation can be recovered.

Understanding Squeezed States of Light Through Wigner's Phase-Space

Sibel Baskal, Marilyn E. Noz

This paper starts with the transition from classical physics to quantum mechanics which was greatly aided by the concept of phase space. The role of canonical transformations in quantum mechanics is addressed. The Wigner phase-space distribution function is then defined which arises from the formulation of the density matrix, followed by the harmonic oscillator in phase space. Coherent and one- and two-mode squeezed states of light as well as the squeezed vacuum are discussed in the phase-space picture. Attention is also drawn to the fact that squeezed states naturally generate entanglement between the two-modes. Coupled harmonic oscillators are also elucidated in connection with the Wigner phase space. It will be noted that the phase-space picture of quantum mechanics has become an important scientific language for the rapidly expanding field of quantum optics. Here, we mainly focus on the simplest form of the Wigner function, which finds application in many branches of quantum mechanics. We make use of several symmetry groups such as Lorentz groups, the symplectic group in two and four dimensions, and the Euclidean group. The decoherence problem of an optical field is examined through a reformulation of the Poincaré sphere as a further illustration of the density matrix.

Wavefunctions of two-mode states in entangled-state representation

Hong-Yi Fan, Alfred Wünsche

Two-mode entangled-state wavefunctions and with complex variables z and y are introduced and investigated. They are direct analogues of the wavefunctions and in the single-mode case or are linearly related to each other by two-dimensional Fourier transformation. The states and are eigenstates of two pairs of commuting operators ( Z , Z † ) (or ( Q + , P − )) and ( Y , Y † ) (or ( P + , Q − )) to eigenvalues ( z , z * ) and ( y , y * ), respectively, and are normalized by means of the two-dimensional delta function. The entangled states and are represented as two limiting cases of two-mode squeezed coherent states. Different representations of these states, in particular, the analogue of the Agarwal–Simon representation of squeezed vacuum states, are derived and the properties of these states are discussed. The transition from the single-mode to the two-mode case is made using the common property of the squeezing operators to belong to different realizations of the abstract SU (1,1) group. The Wigner quasiprobability in representation of the states and is discussed and is explicitly calculated for two-mode squeezed vacuum (and squeezed coherent) states.

Nonclassicality and decoherence of the coherent superposition operation of photon subtraction and addition on the squeezed state

Lijuan Xu, Guo-Bin Tan, Ma Shan-Jun +1 more

The statistical properties of m -coherent superposition operation (μ a + va † ) m on the single-mode squeezed vacuum state (M-SSVS) and its decoherence in a thermal environment are studied. Converting the M-SSVS to a squeezed Hermite polynomial excitation state, we obtain a compact expression for the normalization factor of M-SSVS, which is the Legendre polynomial of the squeezing parameter. We also derive the explicit expression of the Wigner function (WF) of the M-SSVS, and find the negative region of the WF in phase space. The decoherence effect on this state is then discussed by deriving the time evolution of the WF. Using the negativity of the WF, the loss of nonclassicality is then discussed.

Statistical properties and decoherence of two-mode photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum

Liyun Hu, Xue-Xiang, Hong-Yi Fan

We investigate the statistical properties of the photon-subtractions from the two-mode squeezed vacuum state and its decoherence in a thermal environment. It is found that the state can be considered as a squeezed two-variable Hermite polynomial excitation vacuum and the normalization of this state is the Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter. The compact expression for Wigner function (WF) is also derived analytically by using the Weyl ordered operators' invariance under similar transformations. Especially, the nonclassicality is discussed in terms of the negativity of WF. The effect of decoherence on this state is then discussed by deriving the analytical time evolution results of WF. It is shown that the WF is always positive for any squeezing parameter and photon-subtraction number if the decay time exceeds an upper bound (}$κt>{1/2}\ln \frac{2\bar{n}+2}{2\bar{n}+1}).

Complex two-mode quadratures -- a unified formalism for continuous-variable quantum optics

Leon Bello, Yoad Michael, M. Rosenbluh +2 more

Quantum squeezing, a major resource for quantum information processing and quantum metrology, is best analyzed in terms of the field quadratures - the quantum optical analogues of position and momentum, which form the continuous-variable formalism of quantum light. Degenerate squeezing admits a very helpful and simple description in terms of the single-mode quadrature operators, but the non-degenerate case, i.e. when the squeezing involves pairs of modes, requires a more complicated treatment involving correlations between the quadratures of the different modes. We introduce a generalized set of complex quadrature operators that treats degenerate and non-degenerate squeezing on equal footing. We describe the mode-pairs (and photon-pairs) as a single entity, generalizing the concept of single-mode quadrature operators to two-mode fields of any bandwidth. These complex operators completely describe the SU(1,1) algebra of two-photon devices and directly relate to observable physical quantities, like power and visibility. Based on this formalism, we discuss the measurement of optically-broad squeezed signals with direct detection, and present a compact set of phase-dependent observables that completely and intuitively determine the two-mode squeezed state, and quantify the degree of inseparability and entanglement between the modes.
