Abstract

We have demonstrated that near complete coherence can be achieved in a four level double lambda-like systems using a train of ultra-short optical pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed and a scheme has been proposed for establishing high and uniform coherence across different velocity groups in the atomic ensemble. We have also presented a novel scheme of excitation using chirped pulses and shown that in addition to generating coherence in the system it is possible to alter the translational states of the atoms.

High and uniform coherence creation in Doppler-broadened double Λ-like atomic system by a train of femtosecond optical pulses

Amarendra K Sarma, Pawan Kumar

We present a detailed analysis of coherence creation in a four-level double Λ-like atomic system using a train of ultra-short few-cycle Gaussian pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed. It is possible to create high coherence across all the velocity groups in the atomic ensemble using pulses with low repetition frequency. The accumulation of coherence at different radial locations within the atomic beam cross-section as a function of the number of pulses in the train is also reported. We find that pulse trains with lower repetition frequencies are able to generate high and nearly uniform coherence in a substantial part of the atomic system.

Creation of a coherent superposition of quantum states by a single frequency-chirped short laser pulse

Gagik P. Djotyan, Jozsef S. Bakos, G. Demeter +3 more

Traditional schemes for coherent population transfer or generation of coherent superposition states in multilevel atoms or molecules usually utilize two or more laser beams with radiation bandwidth smaller than the frequency interval between the working levels. We show the possibility of creation of the coherent superposition of three metastable states of a four-level atom with tripodlike level structure using a single short frequency-chirped laser pulse. The bandwidth of the pulse envelope (without chirp) must be comparable to or exceed the frequency distance between the two metastable levels. No appreciable excitation of the atom takes place during the creation of the coherent superposition state, thus diminishing significantly the effect of decoherence due to the spontaneous decay of the excited state. The proposed method of creation of superposition states is robust against variations in the laser pulse parameters. Since this method does not require maintaining steady resonance with the atomic transitions (owing to the frequency chirp of the laser pulse), it is effective both in homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened media.

Population transfer in three-level Λ atoms with Doppler-broadened transition lines by a single frequency-chirped short laser pulse

We examine interaction of a single frequency-chirped laser pulse with three-level atoms that have a Λ configuration of levels. We show that it is possible to produce complete fast and robust population transfer of all atoms of the ensemble with Doppler-broadened transition lines from one ground state into the other ground state with negligibly small temporary population of the excited state by controlling the intensity of the laser pulse and the direction and speed of the frequency chirp.

Ultrafast and efficient coherence creation in Λ-like atomic systems driven by nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses

Amarendra K. Sarma, Parvendra Kumar

We report an ultrafast and efficient way to create the maximum coherence between the two lower states in a -like atomic systems, driven by two nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses. The phenomenon of coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced population transfer are investigated by solving the appropriate density matrix equations without invoking the rotating wave approximation. The robustness of the scheme for maximum coherence against the variation of the laser parameters are tested numerically. We also demonstrate that the proposed scheme could be used to obtain complete population transfer to an initially empty ground state.

Simultaneous control of optical dipole force and coherence creation by super-Gaussian femtosecond pulses in Λ -like atomic systems

Pawan Kumar, Parvendra Kumar, Amarendra K. Sarma

We report a study of the optical dipole force on a beam of neutral three-level, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-like atomic system induced by a femtosecond super-Gaussian pulse. We show that maximum coherence between the ground state $|1\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and the excited state $|2\ensuremath{\rangle}$ could be achieved using a train of femtosecond pulses. In addition, it is possible to control the trajectory of the atoms in an atomic beam by using the same scheme. The robustness of the scheme against the variation of the pulse parameters is also investigated.

Coherent population transfer in a double-Λ system driven by few-cycle laser pulses

Weifeng Yang, Shangqing Gong, Yueping Niu +1 more

The behavior of population transfer in a double-Λ system driven by linear polarized few-cycle ultrashort laser pulses is investigated numerically. A time-dependent Schrodinger equation without the rotating wave approximation is solved. It is shown that almost complete population transfer can be achieved even when the adiabatic criterion is not fulfilled. Moreover, the robustness of this scheme in terms of the Rabi frequencies and chirp rates of the pulses is explored.
