Order, chaos and quasi symmetries in a first-order quantum phase transition

Abstract

We study the competing order and chaos in a first-order quantum phase transition with a high barrier. The boson model Hamiltonian employed, interpolates between its U(5) (spherical) and SU(3) (deformed) limits. A classical analysis reveals regular (chaotic) dynamics at low (higher) energy in the spherical region, coexisting with a robustly regular dynamics in the deformed region. A quantum analysis discloses, amidst a complicated environment, persisting regular multiplets of states associated with partial U(5) and quasi SU(3) dynamical symmetries.

Regular and chaotic classical dynamics in the U(5)-SU(3) quantum phase transition of the IBM

Michal Macek, A. Leviatan

We study the classical dynamics in a generic first-order quantum phase transition between the U(5) and SU(3) limits of the interacting boson model. The dynamics is chaotic, of Hénon-Heiles type, in the spherical phase and is regular, yet sensitive to local degeneracies, in the deformed phase. Both types of dynamics persist in the coexistence region resulting in a divided phase space.

Order, chaos and (quasi-) dynamical symmetries across 1st-order quantum phase transitions in nuclei

Michal Macek, Pavel Cejnar, P. Stránský +2 more

First order quantum phase transition (QPT) between spherical and axially deformed nuclei shows coexisting, but well-separated regions of regular and chaotic dynamics. We employ a Hamiltonian of the Arima-Iachello Interacting Boson Model (IBM) with an arbitrarily high potential barrier separating the phases. Classical and quantum analyses reveal markedly distinct behavior of the two phases: Deformed phase is completely regular, while the spherical phase shows highly chaotic dynamics, similar to the Hénon-Heiles system. Rotational bands with quasi-SU(3) characteristics built upon the regular vibrational spectrum of beta- and gamma-vibrations are observed in the deformed phase up to very high excitation energies.

Regularity and chaos at critical points of first-order quantum phase transitions

Michal Macek, A. Leviatan

We study the interplay between regular and chaotic dynamics at the critical point of a generic first-order quantum phase transition in an interacting boson model of nuclei. A classical analysis reveals a distinct behavior of the coexisting phases in a broad energy range. The dynamics is completely regular in the deformed phase and, simultaneously, strongly chaotic in the spherical phase. A quantum analysis of the spectra separates the regular states from the irregular ones, assigns them to particular phases, and discloses persisting regular rotational bands in the deformed region.

Interplay of order and chaos across a first-order quantum shape-phase transition in nuclei

A. Leviatan, Michal Macek

We study the nature of the dynamics in a first-order quantum phase transition between spherical and prolate-deformed nuclear shapes. Classical and quantum analyses reveal a change in the system from a chaotic Hénon-Heiles behavior on the spherical side into a pronounced regular dynamics on the deformed side. Both order and chaos persist in the coexistence region and their interplay reflects the Landau potential landscape and the impact of collective rotations.

Quantum phase transitions studied within the interacting boson model

Pavel Cejnar, Jan Jolie

We study quasicritical phenomena in transitions between two "quantum phases" of a finite boson system, described by the interacting boson model 1 used in nuclear physics. The model is formulated in the algebraic framework and has a simple geometrical interpretation; the "phases" represented by dynamical symmetries U(5) and SU(3) correspond to spherical and deformed nuclear shapes. The quasicriticality of the U(5)-SU(3) transition is shown to be connected with the following phenomena simultaneously occurring in a narrow parameter region between the symmetries: (a) abrupt structural changes of eigenstates, (b) multiple avoided crossing of levels, (c) peaked density of exceptional points, (d) qualitative changes of the corresponding classical potential. We show that these spectroscopic features influence the dynamics of intersymmetry transitions in the model parameter space if the parameters themselves become dynamical variables.

Emergent spectral degeneracies in the quantum phase transitions in the interacting boson model

Yu Zhang, Qiu‐Yue Li, Xiao-Xia Wang

The spectral degeneracies emerging in the critical region of the interacting boson model are systematically investigated. The results indicate that the level crossings in the transitions from the U(5) to the SU(3) quasidynamical symmetry can induce the approximate spectral degeneracies along the first-order transitional line for large boson number $N$. The remnants of these types of degeneracies in finite-$N$ systems have been preliminarily identified from the low-lying spectra of $^{150}\mathrm{Nd}$. In addition, the similar approximate degeneracies emerging in the phase transition between the U(5) and SO(6) quasidynamical symmetries are parallel emphasized and those in other critical models are also mentioned.
