Abstract

We study counterintuitive dynamics of a two-level system (TLS) interacting with electric field superoscillating in time. We show that a TLS may be excited by an external light pulse whose spectral components are below the absorption line of the TLS. We attribute this unique dynamics to the Rabi oscillations of the TLS in a superoscillating driving field.

Decoupling light and matter: permanent dipole moment induced collapse of Rabi oscillations

Denis G. Baranov, Mihail I. Petrov, Krasnok, Alexander E.

Rabi oscillations is a key phenomenon among the variety of quantum optical effects that manifests itself in the periodic oscillations of a two-level system between the ground and excited states when interacting with electromagnetic field. Commonly, the rate of these oscillations scales proportionally with the magnitude of the electric field probed by the two-level system. Here, we investigate the interaction of light with a two-level quantum emitter possessing permanent dipole moments. The semi-classical approach to this problem predicts slowing down and even full suppression of Rabi oscillations due to asymmetry in diagonal components of the dipole moment operator of the two-level system. We consider behavior of the system in the fully quantized picture and establish the analytical condition of Rabi oscillations collapse. These results for the first time emphasize the behavior of two-level systems with permanent dipole moments in the few photon regime, and suggest observation of novel quantum optical effects.

Strong-field effects in Rabi oscillations between a single state and a superposition of states

Sergey Zhdanovich, J. W. Hepburn, Valery Milner

Rabi oscillations of quantum population are known to occur in two-level systems driven by spectrally narrow laser fields. In this work we study Rabi oscillations induced by shaped broadband femtosecond laser pulses. Due to the broad spectral width of the driving field, the oscillations are initiated between a ground state and a coherent superposition of excited states, or a ``wave packet,'' rather than a single excited state. Our experiments reveal an intricate dependence of the wave-packet phase on the intensity of the laser field. We confirm numerically that the effect is associated with the strong-field nature of the interaction and provide a qualitative picture by invoking a simple theoretical model.

Linear and nonlinear Rabi oscillations of a two-level system resonantly coupled to an Anderson-localized mode

Nicolas Bachelard, Rémi Carminati, Patrick Sebbah +1 more

We use time-domain numerical simulations of a two-dimensional scattering system to study the interaction of a collection of emitters resonantly coupled to an Anderson-localized mode. For a low electric-field intensity, we observe strong coupling between the emitters and the mode, which is characterized by linear Rabi oscillations. Remarkably, a higher intensity induces a nonlinear interaction between the emitters and the mode, referred to as the dynamical Stark effect, resulting in nonlinear Rabi oscillations. The transition between the two regimes is observed and an analytical model is proposed which accurately describes our numerical observations.

Quantum dynamics of a microwave driven superconducting phase qubit coupled to a two-level system

Guozhu Sun, Xueda Wen, Bo Mao +4 more

We present an analytical and comprehensive description of the quantum dynamics of a microwave resonantly driven superconducting phase qubit coupled to a microscopic two-level system (TLS), covering a wide range of the external microwave field strength. Our model predicts several interesting phenomena in such an ac driven four-level bipartite system including anomalous Rabi oscillations, high-contrast beatings of Rabi oscillations, and extraordinary two-photon transitions. Our experimental results in a coupled qubit-TLS system agree quantitatively very well with the predictions of the theoretical model.

Quadratic pseudosupersymmetry in two-level systems

Boris F Samsonov, V V Shamshutdinova

Using the intertwining relation we construct a pseudosuperpartner for a (non-Hermitian) Dirac-like Hamiltonian describing a two-level system interacting in the rotating wave approximation with the electric component of an electromagnetic field. The two pseudosuperpartners and pseudosupersymmetry generators close a quadratic pseudosuperalgebra. A class of time-dependent electric fields for which the equation of motion for a two-level system placed in this field can be solved exactly is obtained. A new interesting phenomenon is observed. There exists a time-dependent detuning of the field frequency from the resonance value such that the probability to populate the excited level ceases to oscillate and becomes a monotonically growing function of time tending to 3/4. It is shown that near this fixed excitation regime the probability exhibits two kinds of oscillations. The oscillations with small amplitude and frequency close to the Rabi frequency (fast oscillations) take place at the background of those with big amplitude and small frequency (slow oscillations). During the period of slow oscillations, the minimal value of the probability to populate the excited level may exceed 1/2, suggesting for an ensemble of such two-level atoms the possibility of acquiring an inverse population and exhibit lasing properties.

Inducing complete population oscillations in systems with externally induced dipole moments

Duje Bonacci

A two level system is considered which has no static dipole moment, e.g. molecule $H_2$ in its ground electronic state. If strong enough external field is applied, it will dynamically distort such a system and supply it with time (and field) dependent dipole moment. Although it is impossible to do so in the undistorted system which has no coupling to the dipole component of the external field, having induced in it a dipole moment, the rotational and vibrational dynamics of such system can be manipulated using lasers. In this work, a system is considered in which the external perturbation dynamically induces the transition dipole moment between only two distinct levels. The aim of the work is to show how the driving pulse can be analytically designed, that will produce Rabi-like complete population oscillations between the two levels.
