Complex Obtuse Random Walks and their Continuous-Time Limits

Abstract

We study a particular class of complex-valued random variables and their associated random walks: the complex obtuse random variables. They are the generalization to the complex case of the real-valued obtuse random variables which were introduced in \cite{A-E} in order to understand the structure of normal martingales in $\RR^n$.The extension to the complex case is mainly motivated by considerations from Quantum Statistical Mechanics, in particular for the seek of a characterization of those quantum baths acting as classical noises. The extension of obtuse random variables to the complex case is far from obvious and hides very interesting algebraical structures. We show that complex obtuse random variables are characterized by a 3-tensor which admits certain symmetries which we show to be the exact 3-tensor analogue of the normal character for 2-tensors (i.e. matrices), that is, a necessary and sufficient condition for being diagonalizable in some orthonormal basis. We discuss the passage to the continuous-time limit for these random walks and show that they converge in distribution to normal martingales in $\CC^N$. We show that the 3-tensor associated to these normal martingales encodes their behavior, in particular the diagonalization directions of the 3-tensor indicate the directions of the space where the martingale behaves like a diffusion and those where it behaves like a Poisson process. We finally prove the convergence, in the continuous-time limit, of the corresponding multiplication operators on the canonical Fock space, with an explicit expression in terms of the associated 3-tensor again.

Central Limit Theorems for Open Quantum Random Walks ∗

Stéphane Attal, Nadine Guillotin‐Plantard, Christophe Sabot +2 more

Open Quantum Random Walks are the exact quantum generalization of Markov chains on finite graphs or on nets. These random walks are typically quantum in their behavior, step by step, but they seem to show up a rather classical asymptotic behavior, as opposed to the quantum random walks usually considered in Quantum Information Theory (such as the well-known Hadamard random walk). Typically, in the case of Open Quantum Random Walks on nets, their distribution seems to always converges to a Gaussian distribution or a mixture of Gaussian distributions. In the case of nearest neighbors homogeneous Open Quantum Random Walks on Z^d we prove such a Central Limit Theorem, in the case where only one Gaussian distribution appears in the limit. Through the quantum trajectory point of view on quantum master equations, we transform the problem into studying a certain functional of a Markov chain on Z^d times the Banach space of quantum states. The main difficulty is that we know nothing about the invariant measures of this Markov chain, even their existence. Surprisingly enough, we are able to produce a Central Limit Theorem with explicit drift and explicit covariance matrix. In a second step we are able to extend our Central Limit Theorem to the case of several asymptotic Gaussians, in the case where the operator coefficients of the quantum walk are block-diagonal in a common basis.

Limiting operations for sequences of quantum random variables and a convergence theorem for quantum martingales

Kyler Scott Bridgen Johnson, Michael J. Kozdron

We study quantum random variables and generalize several classical limit results to the quantum setting. We prove a quantum analogue of Lebesgue's dominated convergence theorem and use it to prove a quantum martingale convergence theorem. This quantum martingale convergence theorem is of particular interest since it exhibits non-classical behaviour; even though the limit of the martingale exists and is unique, it is not explicitly identifiable. However, we provide a partial classification of the limit through a study of the space of all quantum random variables having quantum expectation zero.

Limiting Operations for Quantum Random Variables and a Quantum Martingale Convergence Theorem

Kyler Scott Bridgen Johnson

This thesis builds on the notion of quantum, or operator valued, probability as discussed in Farenick, Plosker, and Smith (J. Math. Phys, 2011) as well as Farenick and Kozdron (J. Math. Phys, 2012) by generalizing classical limiting results to the quantum setting. Mimicking the classical setting, we prove a continuity of quantum expectation result, which is the quantum analogue of Lebesgue's dominated convergence theorem and use it extensively to prove other limiting results. With the quantum limiting results in place, we de ne a quantum martingale and prove a quantum martingale convergence theorem. This quantum martingale theorem is of particular interest since it exhibits non-classical behaviour; even though the limit of the martingale exists and is unique, it is not even identi able. In order to understand the limit it is necessary to understand the space of all mean zero quantum random variables. However, we are able to provide a partial classi cation of the limit through a study of the space of all mean zero quantum random variables.

Banach and counting measures, and dynamics of singular quantum states generated by averaging of operator random walks

E. A. Dzhenzher, S. V. Dzhenzher, V. Zh. Sakbaev

In this paper the random channels and their compositions in the space of quantum states are studied. For compositions of i.i.d. random unitary channels, the limit behaviour of probability distributions is described. The sufficient condition for convergence in probability is obtained. The generalized convergence in distribution w.r.t. weak operator topology is obtained. The analysis of transmission of pure and normal states to the set of singular states is done. The dynamics of quantum states is described in terms of the evolution of the values of quadratic forms of operators from the algebra that implements the representation of canonical commutation relations.

ON ALGEBRAIC AND QUANTUM RANDOM WALKS

Demosthenes Ellinas

Algebraic random walks (ARW) and quantum mechanical random walks (QRW) are investigated and related. Based on minimal data provided by the underlying bialgebras of functions defined on e. g the real line R, the abelian finite group Z_N, and the canonical Heisenberg-Weyl algebra hw, and by introducing appropriate functionals on those algebras, examples of ARWs are constructed. These walks involve short and long range transition probabilities as in the case of R walk, bistochastic matrices as for the case of Z_N walk, or coherent state vectors as in the case of hw walk. The increase of classical entropy due to majorization order of those ARWs is shown, and further their corresponding evolution equations are obtained. Especially for the case of hw ARW, the diffusion limit of evolution equation leads to a quantum master equation for the density matrix of a boson system interacting with a bath of quantum oscillators prepared in squeezed vacuum state. A number of generalizations to other types of ARWs and some open problems are also stated. Next, QRWs are briefly presented together with some of their distinctive properties, such as their enhanced diffusion rates, and their behavior in respect to the relation of majorization to quantum entropy. Finally, the relation of ARWs to QRWs is investigated in terms of the theorem of unitary extension of completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) evolution maps by means of auxiliary vector spaces. It is applied to extend the CPTP step evolution map of a ARW for a quantum walker system into a unitary step evolution map for an associated QRW of a walker+quantum coin system. Examples and extensions are provided.

FROM (n + 1)-LEVEL ATOM CHAINS TO n-DIMENSIONAL NOISES

Stéphane ATTAL and Yan PAUTRAT This article is dedicated to the memory of Paul-André MEYER In quantum physics, the state space of a countable chain of (n+1)-level atoms becomes, in the continuous field limit, a Fock space with multiplicity n. In a more functional analytic language, the continuous tensor product space over IR + of copies of the space C n+1 is the symmetric Fock space Γs(L 2 (IR +; C n)). In this article we focus on the probabilistic interpretations of these facts. We show that they correspond to the approximation of the n-dimensional normal martingales by means of obtuse random walks, that is, extremal random walks in IR n whose jumps take exactly n+1 different values. We show that these probabilistic approximations are carried by the convergence of the basic matrix basis a i j (p) of ⊗INC n+1 to the usual creation, annihilation and gauge processes on the Fock space.
