Abstract

We study the non-equilibrium transport properties of a highly anisotropic two-dimensional lattice of particles governed by a Heisenberg XXZ Hamiltonian. The anisotropy of the lattice allows us to approximate the system at finite temperature as an array of incoherently coupled one-dimensional chains. We show that in the regime of strong intrachain interactions, the weak interchain coupling considerably boosts spin transport in the driven system. Interestingly, we show that this enhancement increases with the length of the chains, which is related to superdiffusive spin transport. We describe the mechanism behind this effect, compare it to a similar phenomenon in single chains induced by dephasing, and explain why the former is much stronger.

Heat transport in the X X Z spin chain: from ballistic to diffusive regimes and dephasing enhancement

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, Sarah Al-Assam, Stephen R. L. Clark +1 more

In this work we study the heat transport in an XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with homogeneous magnetic field, incoherently driven out of equilibrium by reservoirs at the boundaries. We focus on the effect of bulk dephasing (energy-dissipative) processes in different parameter regimes of the system. The non-equilibrium steady state of the chain is obtained by simulating its evolution under the corresponding Lindblad master equation, using the time evolving block decimation method. In the absence of dephasing, the heat transport is ballistic for weak interactions, while being diffusive in the strongly-interacting regime, as evidenced by the heat-current scaling with the system size. When bulk dephasing takes place in the system, diffusive transport is induced in the weakly-interacting regime, with the heat current monotonically decreasing with the dephasing rate. In contrast, in the strongly-interacting regime, the heat current can be significantly enhanced by dephasing for systems of small size.

Incoherent transport induced by a single static impurity in a Heisenberg chain

O. S. Barišić, Peter Prelovšek, Alexandros Metavitsiadis +1 more

The effect of a single static impurity on the many-body states and on the spin and thermal transport in the one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures is studied. Whereas the pure Heisenberg model reveals Poisson level statistics and dissipationless transport due to integrability, we show using the numerical approach that a single impurity induces Wigner-Dyson level statistics and at high enough temperature incoherent transport within the chain, whereby the relaxation time and dc conductivity scale linearly with length.

Long-range interaction in an open boundary-driven Heisenberg spin lattice: A far-from-equilibrium transition to ballistic transport

Manuel Katzer, Willy Knorr, Regina Finsterhölzl +1 more

We study an open Heisenberg XXZ spin chain with long-range Ising-type interaction, which is incoherently driven at its boundaries and, therefore, a far-from-equilibrium steady-state current is induced. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques make a regime accessible where the system size is large enough to examine the transition from a diffusive to a ballistic transport regime. We find that the chain lengths for this transition are increasing with decreasing range of the Ising-type interactions between distant spins, whereas the strength of the incoherent driving does not have a relevant effect on the transport transition. The transition can be explained by the suppression of ferromagnetic domains at the edges of the chain.

Role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain interaction in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains*

Yuchen Fan, Rong Yu

In quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) quantum antiferromagnets, the complicated interplay of intrachain and interchain exchange couplings may give rise to rich phenomena. Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in the q1D antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound YbAlO3, we study the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and investigate the role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain coupling on the ground state of the system. We find that the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling can significantly enhance the longitudinal spin correlations and drive the system to an incommensurate AFM phase at intermediate magnetic fields, which is understood as a longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW). With increasing field, the ground state changes to a canted AFM order with transverse spin correlations. We further provide a global phase diagram showing how the competition between the LSDW and the canted AFM states is tuned by the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling.

Dephasing enhanced transport in nonequilibrium strongly correlated quantum systems

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, Thomas Grujic, Dieter Jaksch +1 more

A key insight from recent studies is that noise, such as dephasing, can improve the efficiency of quantum transport by suppressing coherent single-particle interference effects. However, it is not yet clear whether dephasing can enhance transport in an interacting many-body system. Here, we address this question by analyzing the transport properties of a boundary driven spinless fermion chain with nearest-neighbor interactions subject to bulk dephasing. The many-body nonequilibrium stationary state is determined using large-scale matrix product simulations of the corresponding quantum master equation. We find dephasing enhanced transport only in the strongly interacting regime, where it is shown to induce incoherent transitions bridging the gap between bound dark states and bands of mobile eigenstates. The generic nature of the transport enhancement is illustrated by a simple toy model, which contains the basic elements required for its emergence. Surprisingly, the effect is significant even in the linear response regime of the full system, and it is predicted to exist for any large and finite chain. The response of the system to dephasing also establishes a signature of an underlying nonequilibrium phase transition between regimes of transport degradation and enhancement. The existence of this transition is shown not to depend on the integrability of the model considered. As a result, dephasing enhanced transport is expected to persist in more realistic nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems.
