Abstract

We discuss differences between the variational approach to solitons and the accessible soliton approximaion in a highly nonlocal, nonlinear medium. We compare results of both approximations by considering the same system of equations in the same spatial region, under the same boundary conditions. We also compare these approximations with the numerical solution of the equations. We find that the variational highly nonlocal approximation provides more accurate results and, as such, is a more appropriate solution than the accessible soliton approximation. The accessible soliton model offers a radical simplification in the treatment of highly nonlocal, nonlinear media, with easy comprehension and convenient parallels to a quantum harmonic oscillator, however, with a hefty price tag: a systematic numerical discrepancy of up to 100% with the numerical results.

Matter-wave bright solitons in bose-einstein condensate / Abdelaziz Benseghir

We investigate the properties of modulational instability in the Salerno equation in quasi-one dimension in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We analyzed the regions of modulational instability of nonlinear plane waves and determine the conditions of its existence in BEC. The existence and stability of strongly localized modes in discrete media is investigated with the framework of the Salerno model by using a linear analysis method. The regions of stability and instability are determined. Also the existence of localized modes for different values of parameters is shown numerically by homoclinic orbits intersection method. The response of Bose–Einstein condensates is studied with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with an additional nonlinear term, corresponding to nonlocal dipolar interactions. A mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to study parametric excitation of the condensates due to coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity varying periodically. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and a good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52Cr, 164Dy and 168Er, where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions. Dynamics of a matter wave soliton bouncing on the reflecting surface (atomic mirror) under the effect of gravity has been studied by analytical and numerical means. The iv analytical description is based on the variational approach. Resonant oscillations of the soliton's center of mass and width, induced by appropriate modulation of the atomic scattering length and the slope of the linear potential are analyzed. In numerical experiments, we observe the Fermi type acceleration of the soliton when the vertical position of the reflecting surface is periodically varied in time. Analytical predictions are compared with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and a qualitative agreement between them is found.

On a variational principle for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation

Discussion on McLachlan's (1) formulation of a variational method for the time-dependent Schrödinger equation as compared to Frenkel's one. It appears that McLaclan's will not give better results.

Multidimensional Solitons in Nonlocal Media

Boris A. Malomed

The study of soliton-like states in systems with nonlocal nonlinearity is a traditional topic in optics and related areas. Some results obtained in these studies (such as solitons supported by thermal nonlinearity in optical glasses and orientational nonlinearity that affects light propagation in liquid crystals) are well known and have been properly reviewed in the literature; therefore, the respective models are outlined in the present chapter in a brief form. Some other studies such as those addressing models with fractional diffraction, which is represented by a linear nonlocal operator, have also been started more recently; therefore, it should be relevant to review them in detail when more results will be accumulated and this chapter includes a short outline of the latter topic. After providing an introduction to the general area of nonlocal nonlinearities, the chapter offers a summary of results obtained for multidimensional solitons in some specific nonlocal nonlinear models originating in studies of BEC, which are sufficiently mature but have not been reviewed previously. These are anisotropic quasi-2D solitons supported by long-range dipole–dipole interactions in a condensate of magnetic atoms [Tikhonenkov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 090406(2008a)] and giant vortex solitons, which are stable for high values of the winding number [Qin et al., Phys. Rev. A 94, 053611 (2016)], as well as 2D vortex solitons moving with self-acceleration [Qin et al., Phys. Rev. A 99, 023610 (2019)]. These are solitons of a hybrid type, which include matter-wave and electromagnetic-wave components. They are supported, in a binary BEC composed of two different atomic states, by the resonant interaction of the two-component matter waves with a resonant microwave field which couples the two atomic states.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity for rapid soliton compression in nonlocal media

Yingjia Li, Qian Kong, Xihua Yang +1 more

We investigate shortcut-to-adiabaticity protocols for the rapid compression of optical solitons in nonlocal media. Using a variational approximation, we derive an effective Ermakov-like equation for the soliton width and employ inverse engineering to design propagation-dependent control parameters. Three control strategies are compared, based respectively on modulation of the characteristic nonlocal length, the Kerr nonlinearity, and the external parabolic confinement. We show that all three protocols enable high-fidelity compression over strongly reduced propagation distances. By comparing control smoothness and final fidelity, we find that the relative performance of the protocols in the very short-distance regime depends on the chosen criterion, revealing a trade-off between implementation smoothness and target-profile accuracy. These results establish a practical and general route to fast soliton manipulation in nonlocal media.

Variational analysis of soliton scattering by external potentials

Bakhram Umarov, Azeddine Messikh, N Regaa +1 more

Dynamics of the width and center-of-mass position of a matter wave soliton subject to interaction with arbitrary external potential is analyzed using the collective coordinates approach. It is shown that approximation of the trial function and external potential only in the interaction region of the spatial domain is sufficient for adequate description of the soliton scattering process. The validity of the developed approach is illustrated for the Gaussian and Pöschl-Teller potentials.

Quantum fluctations of coherent light in nonlinear media

Anirban Pathak

The interaction of coherent light with a nonlinear medium is modeled here by a general quantum anharmonic oscillator. The model is not exactly solvable in a closed analytical form. But we need operator solutions of the equations of motion corresponding to these models in order to study the quantum fluctuations of coherent light in nonlinear media. In the present work we derive approximate operator solutions. From these solutions we observe that there exists an apparent discrepancy between the solutions obtained by different techniques. We compare different solutions and conclude that all correct solutions are equivalent and the apparent discrepancy is due to the use of different ordering of the operators. We use these solutions to investigate the possibilities of observing different optical phenomena in a nonlinear dielectric medium. To be precise, we have studied quantum phase fluctuations of coherent light in a third order inversion symmetric nonlinear medium. Fluctuations in phase space quadrature for the same system are studied and the possibility of generating squeezed state is reported. Fluctuations in photon number are studied and the nonclassical phenomenon of antibunching is predicted. We have generalized the results obtained for third order nonlinear medium and have studied the interaction of an intense laser beam with a general (m-1)-th order nonlinear medium. Aharanov Anandan nonadiabatic geometric phase is also discussed in the context of (m-1)-th order nonlinear medium.
