Abstract

We demonstrated that by using a pump field with nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the polarization self-rotation squeezing process it is possible to generate a squeezed vacuum optical field with the matching OAM. We found a similar level of maximum quantum noise reduction for a first-order Laguerre-Gaussian pump beam and a regular Gaussian pump beam, even though the optimal operational conditions differed in these two cases. Also, we investigated the effect of self-defocusing on the level of the vacuum squeezing by simultaneously monitoring the minimum quantum noise level and the output beam transverse profile at various pump laser powers and atomic densities and found no direct correlations between the increased beam size and the degree of measured squeezing.

Manipulation of continuous variable orbital angular momentum squeezing and entanglement by pump shaping

Zhi Li, Xulian Guo, Hengxin Sun +2 more

Spatially structured quantum states, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) squeezing and entanglement, is currently a popular topic in quantum optics. The method of generating and manipulating spatial quantum states on demand needs to be explored. In this paper, we generated OAM mode squeezed states of −5.4 dB for the L G 0 + 1 mode and −5.3 dB for the L G 0 − 1 mode directly by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the first time. Additionally, we demonstrated that the OAM mode squeezed and entangled states were respectively generated by manipulating the nonlinear process of the OPO by controlling the relative phase of two beams of different modes, thus making two different spatial multimode pump beams. We characterized the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) entangled states by indirectly measuring the squeezing for the H G 10 ( 45 ∘ ) mode and H G 10 ( 135 ∘ ) mode, and directly measuring the entanglement between the L G 0 + 1 and L G 0 − 1 modes. The effective manipulation of the OAM quantum state provides a novel insight into the continuous variable quantum state generation and construction on demand for high-dimensional quantum information and quantum metrology.

Spatial multimode structure of atom-generated squeezed light

Mi Zhang, R. Nicholas Lanning, Zhihao Xiao +3 more

We investigated the spatial distribution of quantum fluctuations in a squeezed vacuum field, generated via polarization self-rotation (PSR) interaction of an ensemble of Rb atoms and a strong near-resonant linearly polarized laser field. We found that the noise suppression is greatly effected by the transverse profile of a spatial mask, placed in both the squeezed field and the local oscillator, as well as its position along the focused beam near the focal point. These observations indicate the spatial multimode structure of the squeezed vacuum field. We have developed a theoretical model that describes the generation of higher-order Laguerre-Gauss modes as a result of PSR light-atom interaction. The prediction of this model is in a good qualitative agreement with the experimental measurements.

Highly efficient generation of squeezed states of light based on Laguerre-Gaussian modes in a cavity

E. N. Bashmakova, E. A. Vashukevich, Golubeva T. Yu. +1 more

Today, the efficient generation of squeezed states of light seems to be a significant practical problem for various quantum-optical and information applications. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the generation of states based on the Laguerre-Gaussian light modes in the parametric down conversion due to the optimal choice of the cavity configuration. Analyzing the Heisenberg-Langevin equations for the eigenmodes of the system, we estimate the influence of the geometric parameters of the pump beam and the idler and signal beams on the efficiency of generation of squeezed states and on the degree of squeezing. The calculation for a finite number of modes has shown that the highest theoretically possible degree of squeezing in the system is 15.85 dB. Keywords: squeezed light, Laguerre-Gaussian modes, orbital angular momentum, optimization of PDC geometric parameters.

Continuous variable entanglement of orbital angular momentum states

Mikael Lassen, Gerd Leuchs, Ulrik L. Andersen

We have generated a new quantum state of light composed of quadrature entangled Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. For the generation we used an OPO operating in a new regime where all field parameters are degenerate except for its spatial degree of freedom for which it is two-fold degenerate. The entanglement is manifested in the squeezing of the rotated modes in the Hermite-Gauss (HG) basis, measured with a specially tailored local oscillator. The most promising application of CV orbital angular momentum (OAM) states is their compatibility with atoms, thus allowing for storage of CV quantum information.

Experimental Generation And Manipulation Of Quantum Squeezed Vacuum Via Polarization Self-Rotation In Rb Vapor

Travis Horrom

Nonclassical states of light are of increasing interest due to their applications in the emerging field of quantum information processing and communication. Squeezed light is such a state of the electromagnetic field in which the quantum noise properties are altered compared with those of coherent light. Squeezed light and squeezed vacuum states are potentially useful for quantum information protocols as well as optical measurements, where sensitivities can be limited by quantum noise. We experimentally study a source of squeezed vacuum resulting from the interaction of near-resonant light with both cold and hot Rb atoms via the nonlinear polarization self-rotation effect (PSR). We investigate the optimal conditions for noise reduction in the resulting squeezed states, reaching quadrature squeezing levels of up to 2.6 dB below shot noise, as well as observing noise reduction for a broad range of detection frequencies, from tens of kHz to several MHz. We use this source of squeezed vacuum at 795 nm to further study the noise properties of these states and how they are affected by resonant atomic interactions. This includes the use of a squeezed light probe to give a quantum enhancement to an optical magnetometer, as well as studying the propagation of squeezed vacuum in an atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We also investigate the propagation of pulses of quantum squeezed light through a dispersive atomic medium, where we examine the possibilities for quantum noise signals traveling at subluminal and superluminal velocities. The interaction of squeezed light with resonant atomic vapors finds various potential applications in both quantum measurements and continuous variable quantum memories.

Measurement of Stokes-operator squeezing for continuous-variable orbital angular momentum

Jun Guo, Chunxiao Cai, Long Ma +3 more

Abstract We demonstrate experimentally a measurement scheme for the Stokes operators for the continuous-variable squeezed states of orbital angular momentum (OAM). An OAM squeezed state is generated by coupling a dim Hermite-Gauss HG01-mode quadrature-squeezed light beam with a bright HG10-mode coherent light beam on a 98/2 beam splitter. Using an asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer with an extra Dove prism in one arm, we measured the three orbital Stokes operators of the OAM squeezed states with a self-homodyne detection and finally characterized their positions and noise on the orbital Poincaré sphere.
