Quantum Annealing and Computation: A Brief Documentary Note

Asim Kumar Ghosh, Sudip Mukherjee

Published Oct 3, 2013• 4 citations
arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

Major breakthrough in quantum computation has recently been achieved using quantum annealing to develop analog quantum computers instead of gate based computers. After a short introduction to quantum computation, we retrace very briefly the history of these developments and discuss the Indian researches in this connection and provide some interesting documents (in the Figs.) obtained from a chosen set of high impact papers (and also some recent news etc. blogs appearing in the Internet). This note is also designed to supplement an earlier note by Bose (Science and Culture, 79, pp. 337-378, 2013).

A cross-disciplinary introduction to quantum annealing-based algorithms

Salvador Elías Venegas-Andraca, William Cruz-Santos, Catherine McGeoch +1 more

A central goal in quantum computing is the development of quantum hardware and quantum algorithms in order to analyse challenging scientific and engineering problems. Research in quantum computation involves contributions from both physics and computer science; hence this article presents a concise introduction to basic concepts from both fields that are used in annealing-based quantum computation, an alternative to the more familiar quantum gate model. We introduce some concepts from computer science required to define difficult computational problems and to realise the potential relevance of quantum algorithms to find novel solutions to those problems. We introduce the structure of quantum annealing-based algorithms as well as two examples of this kind of algorithms for solving instances of the max-SAT and Minimum Multicut problems. An overview of the quantum annealing systems manufactured by D-Wave Systems is also presented.

Notes on Adiabatic Quantum Computers

Boaz Tamir, Eliahu Cohen

We discuss in this chapter the basics of adiabatic computation, as well as some physical implementations. After a short introduction of the quantum circuit model, we describe quantum adiabatic computation, quantum annealing, and the strong relations between the three. We conclude with a brief presentation of the D-Wave computer and some future challenges.

Perspectives of quantum annealing: methods and implementations

Philipp Hauke, Helmut G. Katzgraber, Wolfgang Lechner +2 more

Quantum annealing is a computing paradigm that has the ambitious goal of efficiently solving large-scale combinatorial optimization problems of practical importance. However, many challenges have yet to be overcome before this goal can be reached. This perspectives article first gives a brief introduction to the concept of quantum annealing, and then highlights new pathways that may clear the way towards feasible and large scale quantum annealing. Moreover, since this field of research is to a strong degree driven by a synergy between experiment and theory, we discuss both in this work. An important focus in this article is on future perspectives, which complements other review articles, and which we hope will motivate further research.

Revolutionizing Computing: A Comprehensive Introduction to Quantum Computing

Douha Jerbi

Quantum computing is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to solve complex problems that classical computers cannot. This article provides an overview of the current state of quantum computing, including a brief history of its development, an explanation of the principles of quantum mechanics that underlie quantum computing, and a description of the major types of quantum computers and their current capabilities. The article also covers recent advances in quantum computing research, including efforts to develop practical quantum algorithms and to overcome the challenges of quantum error correction. Finally, the article concludes with a discussion of the potential applications of quantum computing in areas such as cryptography, drug discovery, and machine learning, as well as the challenges that must be overcome to realize these applications. Overall, this article aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the exciting and rapidly-evolving field of quantum computing.

Comprehensive Review on Quantum Computation

B Jayaprakash

Quantum theory is without doubt one of the 20th century's best technological accomplishments. It provides a coherent structure on which many existing physical theories may be developed. Other major scientific triumphs of the 20th century and a modern field of quantum computing are brought in after more than 50 years of the beginning date. The quantum theory is coupled with computer science. The key aim of this paper is to research some (potential) Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum computation applications and to investigate the interplay between quantum theory and AI. A brief perspective and a popular but easy quantum algorithm are given for the writers, who are not acquainted with quantum calculations so that they can appreciate the force of quantum computation. The aim of this paper is two-fold: to give AI researchers a brief introduction and a glimpse of the panorama of quantum computation; and to examine connections between quantum computation, quantum theory and AI.
