Mixed-Order Phase Transition in a One-Dimensional Model

Abstract

We introduce and analyze an exactly soluble one-dimensional Ising model with long range interactions that exhibits a mixed-order transition, namely a phase transition in which the order parameter is discontinuous as in first order transitions while the correlation length diverges as in second order transitions. Such transitions are known to appear in a diverse classes of models that are seemingly unrelated. The model we present serves as a link between two classes of models that exhibit a mixed-order transition in one dimension, namely, spin models with a coupling constant that decays as the inverse distance squared and models of depinning transitions, thus making a step towards a unifying framework.

Mixed order transition and condensation in an exactly soluble one dimensional spin model

Amir Bar, David Mukamel

Mixed order phase transitions (MOT), which display discontinuous order parameter and diverging correlation length, appear in several seemingly unrelated settings ranging from equilibrium models with long-range interactions to models far from thermal equilibrium. In a recent paper [ 1 ], an exactly soluble spin model with long-range interactions that exhibits MOT was introduced and analyzed both by a grand canonical calculation and a renormalization group analysis. The model was shown to form a bridge between two classes of 1D models exhibiting MOT, namely between spin models with inverse distance square interactions and surface depinning models. In this paper, we elaborate on the calculations performed in [ 1 ]. We also analyze the model in the canonical ensemble, which yields a better insight into the mechanism of MOT. In addition, we generalize the model to include Potts and general Ising spins and also consider a broader class of interactions that decay with distance using a power law different from 2.

Phase transition of a one-dimensional Ising model with distance-dependent connections

Yunfeng Chang, Liang Sun, Xu Cai

The critical behavior of the Ising model on a one-dimensional network, which has long-range connections at distances l>1 with the probability theta(l) approximately l(-m), is studied by using Monte Carlo simulations. Through analyzing the Ising model on networks with different m values, this paper discusses the impact of the global correlation, which decays with the increase of m, on the phase transition of the Ising model. Adding the analysis of the finite-size scaling of the order parameter [M], it is observed that in the whole range of 0<m<2, a finite-temperature transition exists, and the critical exponents show consistence with mean-field values, which indicates a mean-field nature of the phase transition.

Unveiling phase transitions in 1D systems with short-range interactions

L. S. Ferreira, L. N. Jorge, Cláudio José DaSilva +2 more

The statement that any phase transition is related to the appearance or disappearance of long-range spatial correlations precludes a finite transition temperature in one-dimensional (1D) systems. In this paper we demonstrate that the 1D Ising model with short-range exchange interactions exhibits a second-order phase transition at a finite temperature relying on the proper choice of the order parameter. To accomplish this, we combined analytical calculations and high-precision entropic sampling simulations and chose a slightly different order parameter, namely the module of the magnetization. Notably, we detected a phase transition with a corresponding critical temperature around 15 K, which is in excellent agreement with experimental results. Our study indicates that an inappropriate choice of the order parameter may mask phase transitions in one-dimensional systems.

Duality in Generalized Ising Models and Phase Transitions without Local Order Parameters

Franz Wegner

It is shown that any Ising model with positive coupling constants is related to another Ising model by a duality transformation. We define a class of Ising models Mdn on d-dimensional lattices characterized by a number n = 1, 2, … , d (n = 1 corresponds to the Ising model with two-spin interaction). These models are related by two duality transformations. The models with 1 < n < d exhibit a phase transition without local order parameter. A nonanalyticity in the specific heat and a different qualitative behavior of certain spin correlation functions in the low and the high temperature phases indicate the existence of a phase transition. The Hamiltonian of the simple cubic dual model contains products of four Ising spin operators. Applying a star square transformation, one obtains an Ising model with competing interactions exhibiting a singularity in the specific heat but no long-range order of the spins in the low temperature phase.

Phase transition in a general continuous Ising model with long-range interactions

E. Bayong, H. T. Diep, Trong Tuong Truong

Critical exponents for a one-dimensional general continuous Ising model with long-range ferromagnetic interactions decaying as 1/r1+σ are calculated using a histogram Monte Carlo technique. A continuous Ising model means that a spin can take any value between −1 and 1. The critical point behavior is investigated. It is found that the system exhibits a second-order phase transition with nonstandard critical exponents; the singularities in the specific heat and susceptibility depend on σ. For σ=1, there are extremely weak finite size effects: the first-order and the second-order cumulants of the order parameter yield ν=2.42(1). The susceptibility exponent γ=2.259(9). Results for σ=0.7 will be shown and discussed.
