Abstract

We study how conditional photon operations can affect multipartite quantum correlations, specifically nonlocality and entanglement, of the continuous-variable Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. We find that the violation of the Mermin-Klyshko inequality revealing the multipartite nonlocality can be made stronger with photon subtraction applied on each mode of the original GHZ states, particularly in a weak squeezing regime. Photon addition applied on local modes also turns out to enhance the degree of multipartite nonlocality in a broad range of parameters. We further investigate the effects of the photon operations on the degree of multipartite entanglement by looking into the Gaussian tangle, the fidelity of teleportation network, and the quadrature correlations. We find that photon subtraction applied on two modes enhances those entanglement characteristics in a practical squeezing regime while there is no improvement made by photon addition.

Continuous-variable quantum teleportation with non-Gaussian entangled states generated via multiple-photon subtraction and addition

Shuai Wang, Li-Li Hou, Xianfeng Chen +1 more

We theoretically analyze the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation, the quadrature squeezing, and the continuous-variable quantum teleportation when considering non-Gaussian entangled states generated by applying multiple-photon subtraction and multiple-photon addition to a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (TMSVs). Our results indicate that in the case of the multiple-photon-subtracted TMSVs with symmetric operations, the corresponding EPR correlation, the two-mode squeezing degree, the sum squeezing, and the fidelity of teleporting a coherent state or a squeezed vacuum state can be enhanced for any squeezing parameter $r$ and these enhancements increase with the number of subtracted photons in the low-squeezing regime, while asymmetric multiple-photon subtractions will generally reduce these quantities. For the multiple-photon-added TMSVs, although it holds stronger entanglement, its EPR correlation, two-mode squeezing, sum squeezing, and the fidelity of a coherent state are always smaller than that of the TMSVs. Only when considering the case of teleporting a squeezed vacuum state does the symmetric photon addition make somewhat of an improvement in the fidelity for large-squeezing parameters. In addition, we analytically prove that a one-mode multiple-photon-subtracted TMSVs is equivalent to that of the one-mode multiple-photon-added one. And one-mode multiple-photon operations will diminish the above four quantities for any squeezing parameter $r$.

Increasing and decreasing entanglement characteristics for continuous variables by a local photon subtraction

Su‐Yong Lee, Se-Wan Ji, Chang-Woo Lee

We investigate how the entanglement characteristics of a non-Gaussian entangled state are increased or decreased by a local photon subtraction operation. The non-Gaussian entangled state is generated by injecting a single-mode non-Gaussian state and a vacuum state into a 50:50 beam splitter. We consider a photon-added coherent state ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{a}}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}|\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ and an odd coherent state $|\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\rangle}\ensuremath{-}|\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ as a single-mode non-Gaussian state. In the regime of small $|\ensuremath{\alpha}|$, we show that the performance of quantum teleportation and the second-order Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type correlation can both be enhanced, whereas the degree of entanglement decreases, for the output state when a local photon subtraction operation is applied to the non-Gaussian entangled state. The counterintuitive effect is more prominent in the limit of $|\ensuremath{\alpha}|\ensuremath{\sim}0$.

Enhancing quantum entanglement for continuous variables by a coherent superposition of photon subtraction and addition

Su‐Yong Lee, Se-Wan Ji, Ho-Joon Kim +1 more

We investigate how the entanglement properties of a two-mode state can be improved by performing a coherent superposition operation $t\mathrm{a\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}+r{\mathrm{a\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$ of photon subtraction and addition, proposed by Lee and Nha [Phys. Rev. A 82, 053812 (2010)], on each mode. We show that the degree of entanglement, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen--type correlation, and the performance of quantum teleportation can be all enhanced for the output state when the coherent operation is applied to a two-mode squeezed state. The effects of the coherent operation are more prominent than those of the mere photon subtraction $\mathrm{a\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}$ and the addition ${\mathrm{a\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$ particularly in the small-squeezing regime, whereas the optimal operation becomes the photon subtraction (case of $r=0$) in the large-squeezing regime.

Enhanced Bell violation by a coherent superposition of photon subtraction and addition

Jiyong Park, Su-Yong Lee, Hai-Woong Lee +1 more

We show that the coherent superposition ta^+ra^† of photon subtraction and addition applied to each local mode of a two-mode entangled state can enhance the nonlocality manifested by the violation of a Bell inequality. A two-mode squeezed state is used as an input state for this demonstration with four different Bell inequalities employed: Bell inequalities adopting displaced parity operator, pseudospin operator, homodyne measurement, and conditional entropy, respectively. We find that the coherent operation significantly enhances the nonlocality remarkably in the weak squeezing limit, compared with other possible non-Gaussian operations. It can also give a maximal Bell violation with a very small squeezing for the inequalities with pseudospin operator and conditional entropy.

Entanglement properties of non-Gaussian resources generated via photon subtraction and addition and continuous-variable quantum-teleportation improvement

Yang Yang, Fuli Li

The entanglement properties of non-Gaussian states are investigated, which are obtained by performing the photon addition, photon subtraction, photon-addition-then-subtraction, and photon-subtraction-then-addition operations on the two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We show that the partial von Neumann entropy of all the resulting states is greater than that of the original squeezed state, but only the photon-subtracted states and the photon-added-then-subtracted states have the stronger Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation than the original squeezed state. Quantum teleportation of Braunstein and Kimble protocol is studied for coherent states, squeezed states, and mixed Gaussian states with the non-Gaussian entangled resources. For all the states to be teleported, the fidelity with the photon-subtracted and the photon-added-then-subtracted entangled resources is higher than that with the two-mode squeezed vacuum resource. Based on Bures fidelity, we find that quantum teleportation for mixed and classical single-mode Gaussian states is more faithful than for single-mode Gaussian states with high purity and nonclassicality.

Directly comparing entanglement-enhancing non-Gaussian operations

Tim J. Bartley, Ian A. Walmsley

Single-photon-level non-Gaussian operations—photon addition, photon subtraction, and their coherent superposition—are powerful tools with which to increase entanglement in continuous-variable optical states. Although such operations are typically not deterministic, there may be other advantages such as noiseless manipulation. Therefore, to fully account for the efficacy of a particular non-Gaussian operation in a practical scenario, we develop figures of merit which trade off the advantages of such protocols against their success probability. Specifically, we define 'entanglement enhancement rate' as the increase in entanglement per trial of a generic non-Gaussian operation on a two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state. We consider states generated by photon-subtraction, photon-addition and a coherent superposition of subtraction and addition. We compare each strategy when applied to one or both modes of a TMSV state, and also in the presence of channel losses prior to the operation. In many cases, additional properties are analytically calculable, including excess noise arising from the operation and the fidelity of the resulting states to particular Gaussian and non-Gaussian states. Finally, by incorporating loss, we derive optimal interaction parameters for each non-Gaussian operation which maximize the effectiveness of the particular protocol under investigation.
