An indirect measurement process parameterized by a nonunitary system–pointer interaction

Abstract

An indirect quantum state measurement process is under investigation. Common evolution of detector's microscopic part (pointer) and measured system (target) is considered to be nonunitary due to the interaction between pointer and environment. System of differential equations for superoperators, which map initial target state to it's conditional final state is obtained. Developed formalism is applied to the problem of cavity quantum mode photodetection to investigate basic information characteristics of this measurement process.

Reduced conditional dynamic of quantum system under indirect quantum measurement

Miroshnichenko, George, Trifanov, Alexander

In this report, we study the reduced conditional dynamics of a quantum system in the case of indirect quantum measurement. The detectors microscopic part (pointer) interacts with the measured system (target) and the environment, which results in a nonunitary interaction between target and pointer. The quantum state evolution conditioned by the measurement result is under investigation. Particularly, we are interested in explicit analytical expressions for the conditional evolution superoperators and basic information characteristics of this measurement process, which is applied to the cavity mode photodetection problem.

The Photodetection Process under the Conditions of an Imperfect Measurement Device

Alexander Trifanov, George P. Miroshnichenko

The process of cavity mode quantum state photodetection subject to a nonideal measurement device is under consideration. A set of nonorthogonal probabilistic operator valued measures (POVMs) describing the photodetection process is suggested. The superoperators of conditional system evolution and their Kraus representations are obtained. Developed formalism is used to the quantum state reconstruction problem. We recalculate the probabilities of hypotheses about the initial state of cavity quantum mode in the case of unknown superposition of vacuum and single photon states.

Monitoring of quantum mode correlation functions in the presence of pointer state phase relaxation

Ekaterina S. Trifanova, Alexander Trifanov

In present work we investigate the process of interaction between two-level atom- pointer and cavity mode to obtain correlation functions of mode quantum state. In particular, we analyze the protocol of indirect photodetection which allow estimations for average values of photon number operator in any order using statistics of atom state detector clicks.

Quantum measurement of photon distribution statistics for intra-cavity EM field monitored by dumping atom-pointer

Alexander Trifanov, Ekaterina S. Trifanova

We describe and theoretically study a process of photon distribution statistics measurement for intra-cavity mode of EM field monitored by indirect photo-detection scheme. In particular, we investigate photon number distribution and Mandel's parameter (normalized dispersion) of the mode using statistics of atomic state detector clicks. In our model, a two-level atom-pointer which passes through the cavity interacts with the mode and environment, distorting the measured statistical properties of the mode.To account for this, phase distortion (decoherece) and population relaxation are introduced in the model. In this paper, we use the super-operators approach to intra-cavity mode evolution conditioned by atomic state detector clicks.

Decoherence and measurement in open quantum systems

Vladimir Privman A, Dima V. Mozyrsky

We review results of a recently developed model of a microscopic quantum system interacting with the macroscopic world components which are modeled by collections of bosonic modes. The interaction is via a general operator (Lambda) of the system, coupled to the creation and annihilation operators of the environment modes. We assume that in the process of a nearly instantaneous quantum measurement, the function of the environment involves two distinct parts: the pointer and the bath. Interaction of the system with the bath leads to decoherence such that the system and the pointer both evolve into a statistical mixture state described by the density matrix such that the system is in one of the eigenstates of (Lambda) with the correct quantum mechanical probability, whereas the expectation values of pointer operators retain amplified information on that eigenstate. We argue that this process represents the initial step of a quantum measurement.
