The quantum ultra-cold neutron gas trapped in the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential on the Earth's gravitational field

Abstract

In our previous paper, we have investigated the thermodynamics of the quantum ultra-cold neutron gas trapped in the two-dimensional square-well potential on the Earth's gravitational field. We have pointed out that they have strong dependence on the shape of the trapping potential. In the present paper, we estimate the Fermi energy and the density distribution of the Fermi gas with two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential, instead of the square-well potential. Then we discuss them in terms of the Fermi energy and the density distribution as compared with both of cases.

Thermodynamics of Quantum Ultra-Cold Neutron Gas under Gravity of the Earth

H. Kaneko, A. Tohsaki, A. Hosaka

The stored ultra-cold neutrons have been developed. A high density ultra-cold neutron gas has been recently produced by using the nuclear spallation method. We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the quantum ultra-cold neutron gas in the Earth's gravitational field. We find that the quantum effects increase temperature dependence of the chemical potential and the internal energy in the low temperature region. The density distribution of quantum ultra-cold neutron gas is modified by the Earth's gravitational field.

Thermodynamic Properties of an Ideal Fermi Gas Trapped in a Two-Dimensional Space

Liu Jing-yi

Thermodynamic properties of an ideal Fermi gas in a two-dimensional space trapped in a generic power-law potential are studied, based on the local density approximation. The total energy E,Fermi energy ,chemical potential μ and heat capacity C in the high-and low-temperature approximations are derived. How these physical quantities depend on the external potential are discussed.

Mesoscopic Fermi gas in a harmonic trap

J. Schneider, Hartmut Wallis

We study the thermodynamical properties of a mesoscopic Fermi gas in view of recent possibilities to trap ultracold atoms in a harmonic potential. We focus on the effects of shell closure for finite small atom numbers. The dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat, and the density distribution on particle number and temperature is obtained. Isotropic and anisotropic traps are compared. Possibilities of experimental observations are discussed.

The finite-temperature thermodynamics of a trapped unitary Fermi gas within fractional exclusion statistics

Fang Qin, Ji-sheng Chen

We utilize a fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane and Wu hypothesis to study the thermodynamics of a unitary Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential at ultra-low finite temperature. The entropy per particle as a function of the energy per particle and energy per particle versus rescaled temperature are numerically compared with the experimental data. The study shows that, except the chemical potential behavior, there exists a reasonable consistency between the experimental measurement and theoretical attempt for the entropy and energy per particle. In the fractional exclusion statistics formalism, the behavior of the isochore heat capacity for a trapped unitary Fermi gas is also analyzed.

The two-body problem of ultra-cold atoms in a harmonic trap

Patrick Shea, Brandon P. van Zyl, Rajat K. Bhaduri

We consider two bosonic atoms interacting with a short-range potential and trapped in a spherically symmetric harmonic oscillator. The problem is exactly solvable and is relevant for the study of ultra-cold atoms. We show that the energy spectrum is universal, irrespective of the shape of the interaction potential, provided its range is much smaller than the oscillator length.
