Abstract

The concept of off-diagonal geometric phase (GP) has been introduced in order to recover interference information about the geometry of quantal evolution where the standard GPs are not well-defined. In this Letter, we propose a physical setting for realizing non-Abelian off-diagonal GPs. The proposed non-Abelian off-diagonal GPs can be implemented in a cyclic chain of four qubits with controllable nearest-neighbor interactions. Our proposal seems to be within reach in various nano-engineered systems and therefore opens up for first experimental test of the non-Abelian off-diagonal GP.

Non-Abelian geometric phases in a system of coupled quantum bits

Vahid Azimi Mousolou, Erik Sjöqvist

A common strategy to measure the Abelian geometric phase for a qubit is to let it evolve along an orange-slice-shaped path connecting two antipodal points on the Bloch sphere by two different semi-great-circles. Since the dynamical phases vanish for such paths, this allows for direct measurement of the geometric phase. Here, we generalize the ``orange-slice'' setting to the non-Abelian case. The proposed method to measure the non-Abelian geometric phase can be implemented in a cyclic chain of four qubits with controllable interactions.

Non-Abelian generalization of off-diagonal geometric phases

David Kult, Johan Åberg, Erik Sjöqvist

If a quantum system evolves in a noncyclic fashion the corresponding geometric phase or holonomy may not be fully defined. Off-diagonal geometric phases have been developed to deal with such cases. Here, we generalize these phases to the non-Abelian case, by introducing off-diagonal holonomies that involve evolution of more than one subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. Physical realizations of the off-diagonal holonomies in adiabatic evolution and interferometry are put forward.

Off-diagonal generalization of the mixed-state geometric phase

Stefan Filipp, Erik Sjöqvist

The concept of off-diagonal geometric phases for mixed quantal states in unitary evolution is developed. We show that these phases arise from three basic ideas: (1) fulfillment of quantum parallel transport of a complete basis, (2) a concept of mixed-state orthogonality adapted to unitary evolution, and (3) a normalization condition. We provide a method for computing the off-diagonal mixed-state phases to any order for unitarities that divide the parallel transported basis of Hilbert space into two parts: one part where each basis vector undergoes cyclic evolution and one part where all basis vectors are permuted among each other. We also demonstrate a purification based experimental procedure for the two lowest-order mixed-state phases and consider a physical scenario for a full characterization of the qubit mixed-state geometric phases in terms of polarization-entangled photon pairs. An alternative second order off-diagonal mixed-state geometric phase, which can be tested in single-particle experiments, is proposed.

Signature of Non-Abelian to Abelian Transition in Spin Systems Through Geometric Phase

D. De Munshi, Manas Mukherjee

Abelian and Non-Abelian evolution of a quantum system manifests differently in the geometric phase acquired by the system under such evolutions. In this work we develop and study, using dressed state techniques, an experimentally realizable spin system which allows us to transit smoothly from non-Abelian to Abelian evolutions by changing externally controllable parameters. The study provides insights into the underlying physical phenomenon governing such a transition allowing us greater control on phase generation in a quantum system. The robustness of geometric phase against fluctuations of the external parameters of the system has also been studied in this work. The noise analysis has direct consequence on the present search for fault tolerant quantum gates using geometric phase.

Geometric Phases in NV Centers: Abelian and Non-Abelian Protocols Using Hyperfine-Engineered Dark Subspaces

S. Biswas, V. A. Chirayath, Jonathan Asaadi

Geometric phases encode the holonomy acquired under cyclic control of a quantum Hamiltonian: for nondegenerate eigenstates the effect is Abelian (a scalar phase), while in degenerate manifolds the Wilczek-Zee generalization yields a matrix-valued holonomy that can mix states and depends on path ordering. We present an overview of measuring Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and propose a non-rotating measurement protocol enabled by the intrinsic${ }^{14} ~\mathrm{N}$hyperfine manifold. As a first step, we propose to measure the Abelian Berry phase on a single hyperfine-resolved two-level transition using microwaveengineered closed loops with dynamical-phase cancellation by loop reversal. We then propose a non-Abelian protocol that engineers a two-dimensional degenerate dark subspace in an NV-${ }^{14} ~\mathrm{N}$manifold via RF dressing and three phase-coherent microwave couplings (a tripod Hamiltonian). Two closed control loops implemented by winding independent microwave phases generate non-commuting SU(2) holonomies, which can be verified using final-only population readout and minimal tomography. We also present timing trade-off curves, full unitary Schrödinger evolution of the four-level tripod, and projected dark-subspace diagnostics that quantify both leakage and non-commuting holonomy.

Geometric phases in quantum information

Erik Sjöqvist

The rise of quantum information science has opened up a new venue for applications of the geometric phase (GP), as well as triggered new insights into its physical, mathematical, and conceptual nature. Here, we review this development by focusing on three main themes: the use of GPs to perform robust quantum computation, the development of GP concepts for mixed quantum states, and the discovery of a new type of topological phases for entangled quantum systems. We delineate the theoretical development as well as describe recent experiments related to GPs in the context of quantum information. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
